Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

Progress, not perfection! And there will be relapses occasionally. Let’s face it, there’s not much else we can be achieving right now is there? (Speaking for myself of course!)

Joywillcomeagain · 20/04/2020 11:43

One prompted poo on the potty here 🥳.
Keeping my fingers crossed our poor carpets and sofas are spared today 😝

Indecisivelurcher · 20/04/2020 11:52

Much excitement, batman pants have arrived!!!! 😁🦇

fascinated · 20/04/2020 11:57

Poo here, after much toing and froing !

fascinated · 20/04/2020 11:57

Oh great lurcher. Going to try them? Eyes peeled if you do... good luck!

fascinated · 20/04/2020 11:58

@joy, brilliant!

TwistyHair · 20/04/2020 13:13

Yay @Joywillcomeagain. That’s great. Potty training is so annoying.

LunaHardy · 20/04/2020 18:39

How often do your LO's poop? DD normally goes once a day, sometimes every other. We had one poo on the potty on Saturday morning and nothing since. For someone who goes once a day or sometimes every other, how many days would you say is too many to not go? I thought we might have made some poop progress after Saturday, but clearly not Confused

@luna when my Dd was potty training she used to hold it in, her record was 8 days!!! We got over it by incorporating lots of prunes into her diet, and reading the rather disturbing book 'poo goes to poo land', which features a family of turds who want to be reunited... I shit you not... (sorry)

Indecisivelurcher · 20/04/2020 20:07

2 accidents for ds today, one when he pulled down his trousers but not his new pants! One when he got caught short under the slide out in the garden!

LunaHardy · 20/04/2020 20:12

@Indecisivelurcher LOL at the poo book, going to look it up! 8 days is incredible!

Well done to your LO, at least he tried! My dd still can't get the hang of knickers so we're still commando at the mo!

@LunaHardy I have no idea what is a worrying length for them to hold it, but we’re in the same boat! My DS (27m) has cracked wees in the potty, and we haven’t had any accidents for days but pooing is a completely different story. He is absolutely holding it in, until can’t any longer and then gets incredibly upset that it hasn’t gone in the potty or loo. He did a poo in his nap time nappy today (despite having spent half the morning going back and forth to the potty) and then had a complete meltdown about it. Not sure what to do since he won’t poo on the potty and hates to do it in a nappy too. He is perfectly happy to sit on the potty, but just seems to lose all urge to go the min he sits down. It’s so frustrating, and hard to see him either uncomfortable or upset.

We’ve followed the advice of @Indecisivelurcher and he’s been eating loads of fruit including prune pouches. We’ve downloaded the poo goes to pooland app, which tells the story for you (it’s a free nhs resource) and he loves it. We’ve been following the oh crap method for wees (today is day 10) but thinking I might try bribing with choc tomorrow if he looks like he needs a poo. I feel like we’ve tried everything else, including all the trouble shooting stuff in the book so getting desperate to see if he can do it, or if he genuinely can’t. Feel a bit stuck since he won’t wear nappies now either though Confused

If anyone else has found any other great ways to persuade their child to poo at all, ideally on the potty but I’ll take anywhere, I’d be very grateful!

LunaHardy · 20/04/2020 21:02

@Kle209 exactly the same here, wees are absolutely fine now. No accidents for days now, even with clothes on, out in the garden and even out for a walk and a bike ride. But after that one poo in the potty on Saturday morning (which took over a week in itself) I feel like she still isn't confident. She's a good little eater so I know she must need to go, eats plenty of fruit and veg and always has a flask of water on the go. Prunes is a good idea, will try and get some when we next go shopping. She was back and forth from potty at bedtime (she had a nappy on) but no luck. Luckily she doesn't mind having a nappy on for naps/sleeping etc. Do you leave him alone in private when he's trying? That was the first time she did it once we left her alone in the bathroom, I don't really know what else to suggest for you Confused

Suggestion of raising their little knees up on potty by placing their feet on a couple of thick books or a block? To get them in better squat position for poo. No idea how practical that is but it is suggested in oh crap book (and incidentally in physio advice I was given after birth too so makes sense to me).

Is it just as bad on Big toilet? They might prefer sitting there for poo?

Dreamcatcher007 · 20/04/2020 23:40

@Kobey123, @Mariecat1970, how is the potty training going? Or anyone else here doing potty training for babies under 2?

My LB is only 21 months and I’m not keen on spending weeks catching wee and cleaning poops, so I’m torn whether to start it now or not - would love a view from other mums of younger babies who started potty training!

Kle209 · 21/04/2020 07:24

@LunaHardy it’s nice to hear I’m not alone, even though I wouldn’t really wish this on anyone else! It’s so hard when you can see that they need a poo isn’t it? I have tried leaving him alone, but then he just gets up to come get me! I just hope we get over this phase quickly...

@fascinated we have tried to get him in the right position with books under his feet etc but if he doesnt want to go his legs just flop down anyway! He likes to sit on the potty and the big toilet at different times, and is equally happy on both - just not to actually poo!!

Honestly, it’s a good job he’s cute!!

Mariecat1970 · 21/04/2020 07:33

@Dreamcatcher007 it is going well! I’m not going to lie, the first week was horrendous and the 2nd week not much better. But it seemed to click in the 3rd week- we’re now in week 4 and have only had 2 accidents in the last week, and that’s because she was distracted.

The only issues we have with dd being a bit younger is that she struggles to get her trousers down so I still have to assist with that.

Are you planning on following the Oh Crap method? That is what we used and it seems to have worked. Just be prepared for stressful days at the start!.

Kobey123 · 21/04/2020 08:04

She has cracked the peeing and is dry at night even tho she still goes to bed with a pull up on, but is holding her poo in until the last minute making them huge and uncomfortable to pass 😢 doctor gave us some lactolose to help soften them as he said otherwise she will be scared to go, hoping this works x

Dreamcatcher007 · 21/04/2020 08:49

@Mariecat1970 That’s amazing - great result! She must be so proud of herself!

Yes I was thinking of following Oh Crap method, but still hesitant whether it would be quicker and easier in 6 months or so...

Dreamcatcher007 · 21/04/2020 08:52

@Kobey123 Great result! How long did it take for you crack it for daytime training

TwistyHair · 21/04/2020 18:13

We’ve had a few accidents today but also asked to go for a wee twice. Which is massive progress. She said ‘I need toilet quick quick’. But poos.....no poo for three days now. Plenty of smelly farts on the toilet which got my hopes up. Feeding her fruit and hoping that we catch it when it comes.

fascinated · 21/04/2020 18:32

Drinking water is also always a great way to speed up a poo, I find.

We seem to be graduating towards the big toilet... which I am pleased about. Especially with a bit of a runny poo this eve....

Kobey123 · 21/04/2020 18:33

About 10 days x

Indecisivelurcher · 21/04/2020 18:59

Day 4 for ds, who is 3 next month. No accidents today, taking himself to the potty for wees, wearing pants and trousers. Great! However 2 days of 0 poos here so I'm wondering if he's holding it a bit. Will be on alert tomorrow!

Maxmeandbump · 21/04/2020 18:59

Hi guys, started potty training again today after our attempt at the start of lockdown...
Initially went really well... Two pees in the potty basically unprompted so I thought great, it's actually sunk in!
But since then he has had about 8 accidents. He did go once when I asked him to try for one before we play a game and he did go then but apart from that he's weeing on the floor, sofa etc and I just don't really know how to handle it. I've been saying uhoh weewees don't go on the floor they go in the potty, try again next time kinda thing and it just doesn't seem to work.
And just now I asked him to try for a wee before bath time, he sat down then said no, got up, and wee'd straight away when he got in the bath!
I think he genuinely just can't be bothered and it's like a battle of wills constantly!
Any advice??
Also he will nearly always do a poo on the potty and has been since we started even with nappies on when the potties around
