Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

Poo success! took into the walk in cupboard for privacy!

fascinated · 18/04/2020 10:12

At some stage I will try and get him using potty in the downstairs loo. Have been having it out near us for speed but now he is getting more notice I think we can perhaps afford to have it further away ... progress!

Well I need to say thank you for the votes on here to go for it. I really wasn't sure. I knew ds had a good understanding but wasn't sure whether he was ready because he wasn't consistently telling me or bothered. Day 3, 3 wees on the potty, he's wearing trousers and taking himself off to the potty unprompted. Thanks folks really really pleased!!!

LunaHardy · 18/04/2020 12:15

@fascinated @Indecisivelurcher yay for both of you! 🤩

Am I being a bit keen to try and tackle nighttime yet? 🤔

The other way rather than oh crap is to not do bare bum. And maybe wait until child is older. With my son he had pants and trousers from the beginning. But he was 3 so much older. He only had a few half accidents on day 1 and then had it sorted. He also asked to go for wees after a day although he did still need reminding if he was playing or watching tv. So it was very different to oh crap and much easier. There wasn’t any chasing him round trying to catch a wee.

@LunaHardy I think nighttime is a different thing because it depends on the child having a certain hormone that stops urine being produced at night. So you can’t train for it before they’re ready.

Indecisivelurcher · 18/04/2020 12:44

Thanks @twistyhair, I've been wondering what this oh crap thing is all about!!! Interesting. What age does it apply from? I'm defo in the wait until they're totally ready then whip the nappy off no drama camp. I agree about nights. Personally I will carry on using a nappy until ds is dry of his own accord.

TwistyHair · 18/04/2020 12:53

I don’t know what age oh crap applies from really. Or up to. I was never really sold on it although I know some people really rate it. Think it just depends how you want to go about it. I couldn’t be doing with bare bums and all the being on edge trying to catch a wee and having weeks of potty training. So with my first, we quit after less than a day as there were too many accidents. Which isn’t the oh crap way. We also quit after a day this time round with my daughter. But then she had other ideas a couple of weeks later! She decided on no nappy. Like someone else said, it’s one of those things where they all get there in the end and however it works for you and your child is the best way.

@Iris243 welcome back! Good luck.

Well done to those whose kids are doing poos. I’m so jealous!! We’ve had two in leggings and none on the toilet.

Following...

My DD is 2yrs months. I started potty training her a few months back as I was expecting DC2. She was doing really well! Nursery were very supportive and she had some days completely dry, telling us when she needed a wee/poo. Then I had the new baby and a couple of weeks later we went into lockdown. Since then she has regressed massively. She started soiling herself for pretty much every time she needed the toilet. I was at my wits end a couple of weeks ago so have resorted back to pull ups. The mortal sin of potty training, I know!! But I couldn't cope with a newborn and cleaning the place up all the time.

She can still happily wee/poo on the potty or toilet when we plonk her on it. But still shows no signs of initiative to go herself.

Anyone else dealing with any potty regression?

LolaLollypop · 18/04/2020 13:00

*2yr 7 months

TwistyHair · 18/04/2020 13:07

I’ve not experienced that @Lola but I think pull ups sounds the right decision for you at the moment. You know she can do it but probably just wants to be a baby again for a bit. I think that’s ok.

Iris243 · 18/04/2020 14:51

Okay so I seem to have got myself into a situation. Managed to get nappies back on. But she wants to poo on the potty? And some wee too but most wee had been nappy.

Do I just leave her too it. Will it be confusing when I want to do it the whole way? I don’t think I’d want her to have to poo in her nappy after this, wouldn’t feel right.

Really appreciate this thread!

Indecisivelurcher · 18/04/2020 16:51

That's difficult @iris, I'm not sure what I'd make of it because of your Dd being so young. Have you read anything about elimination training as opposed to potty training?

TwistyHair · 18/04/2020 17:10

@Iris243 could you try pull ups? Or those panty liner things that someone else suggested?

Caz1412 · 18/04/2020 18:19

Using lock down to train my 23 month old too! Glad I’m not the only one who had this idea! So far so good, he’s mostly naked from the waist down at home, (uses potty without any prompting for both wee and ooo) he wears joggers and stays dry for our daily walk. However, I cannot get him in pants!! I messed up by the first few days starting with a pull up and he still has a nappy at night. So I think tight pants feel like a nappy? I’ve tried everything and he ALWAYS wees in pants but can wear pjs or joggers without pants and asks me to pull them down to use the potty, help please?!

Indecisivelurcher · 18/04/2020 18:38

@caz sounds good 👍 personally I would 100% just do loose joggers and no pants, for several weeks.

TwistyHair · 18/04/2020 19:02

I agree with above. Don’t worry about pants for now.

Indecisivelurcher · 18/04/2020 20:12

Just one accident right before bedtime, caused by too tight pyjama bottoms that he couldn't get down! 😆

babycornplease · 18/04/2020 20:18

What do people think of those training pants, we've had a fairly good day, every time I've plonked her on the potty, she's weed... she hasn't shown any inclination to go herself for a few days though...

My friend (one trained, one to go!) recommended the Jojo training knickers... I am in two minds...

Oh and also, I don't recommend giving them anything 'exciting' to drink. She had a drink of one part orange juice, 3000 parts water, she decided it was great fun as the water was a different colour, peeing like a cart horse for the next few hours...

I've actually realised how little she drinks normally due to this. So perhaps it's a good thing that she was drinking the 'magic' water??

Greenmarmalade · 18/04/2020 20:23

@Caz1412 my dd was the same. Just leave pants alone for a good month.

Joywillcomeagain · 18/04/2020 20:44

Just jumping back in to say after my mini meltdown a few days ago my mom convinced me to persevere.

We've been struggling on with about 50/50 accidents to successes. She's actually better with pants and leggings on. No idea why. Today was very hard till about 7pm when she did a pee on the potty and then I saw her squirming and popped her back on and she pooed as well! Was really chuffed. She says poo poo now while she's peeing so she gets what's happening. I think we're getting the hang of when to pop her on the potty. Because if her poor motor skills I think we'll be doing that for her for a while yet. Glad I persisted we're a way from being finished but we've made progress!! Main thing is she will sit on the potty now! Just caught up on the thread and wanted to share.

Well done everyone it's so difficult but I know we'll all get there in the end. Smile

Indecisivelurcher · 18/04/2020 20:47

@luna and just repeat, everything's a phase... 😅

Indecisivelurcher · 18/04/2020 20:48

Ha oops, wrong thread, wrong op... Still totally applies though 😆

TwistyHair · 18/04/2020 21:52

Oh great @Joywillcomeagain! Sounds positive

TwinkleMerrick · 18/04/2020 22:03

Following this thread, my dd is 2 in May and I was thinking about potty training. We have done a bit of bare bum but I have no idea what to do. I think I need to be brave and just whip that nappy off for a whole day, see what happens and take it from there xx
