How to get 2 year old to tell me she needs to use the potty?

DD turned 2 last week and I attempted potty training in July, she hasn't done anything on the potty yet but enjoys sitting on it with clothes on and sometimes asks me to pull down her leggings and pull up nappy to sit on it as well, but doesn't go for an actual wee or poo.
She does have a slight speech delay, but I'm wondering how I'd get her to tell me she needs to go so that I can catch it in the potty in time?
She tells me when she has gone in her nappy because she doesn't like the feel of wetness (tugs at her leggings / nappy and points.)
Also, do I just put her in "big girl knickers" for a day and see how she gets on? Maybe if she goes in her knickers she will realise it won't feel nice.
I'm a first time mummy so a bit clueless when it comes to potty training!
Plus she starts nursery on Monday so I'd have liked her to at be going on the potty for that.

I trained mine at about the same age and it took months for them to actually tell me they needed to go - I just used to take them frequently, or they would take themselves off to the potty.

I'd recommend reading Oh Crap. She definitely doesn't need to be able to say 'I need a wee now' but you will have to do a bit more to actively train her that she goes in the potty/toilet now.

Sounds like she's not fully ready for it. She'll get it eventually and just give her time

I agree she might not be quite ready but letting her sit on it and telling her what it's for is a good start. My first attempt with DD was a disaster. I left it for a bit and about 3 months later she just sat on the potty and did a wee. Lots of praise and she got the idea very quickly.

Wait until she’s ready, then she’ll tell you every time. Mine were trained at 3 and it took half a day.

I followed the oh crap Method 4 weeks ago with DD who is now 20 months. She tells me every time she needs to go. It took a couple of weeks for poos but she is now reliably dry and clean. I'd highly recommend it.

I waited until both mine were three . I showed DD and my husband showed DS. Both were trained in a couple of days. Don't make a big deal of it - if she isn't ready, forget it for a while.

sounds like she isnt ready, go back to nappies and wait for her to show signs she is ready.
