3.5 yr old suddenly totally incontinent. Any advice?

My 3.5 yr DD was toilet trained at the beginning of the summer. Apart from being constipated at the start (and going onto movicol) she got it really quickly and has been pretty reliable over the last 6 weeks. I've been on day trips, long journeys in the car and she's been fine- no accidents.

Since Sunday she's suddenly totally incontinent. All wees & poos have been in her knickers. The only change has been her big sister going to school and she started nursery today but seems happy about both.

Is a total regression like this normal? Do I keep her in knickers or shall we go back to pull ups? Should I keep on encouraging her to go to the loo? Although when I ask her if she's needs the loo/potty, she says no and then a minute later she does a huge wee in her knickers.

Does anyone else have any experience of this? Thanks

No advice sorry OP, but watching with interest as DS started really well then has suddenly stopped too!

I've just looked up the symptoms of a uti- she doesn't have any of the other symptoms although I guess it's hard to tell? She's not mentioned it hurting when she wees.

Would a uti cause her to poo her pants too?

Don't put her in pull-ups, talk to her about it, and revert to asking every half hour if she needs the toilet. If she has an accident, talk to her calmly about why she didn't find the toilet when she knows how to. Is she worried or stressed about anything?

is she constipated again? DD has leakage due to constipation with she couldn't control and the impacted poo was pressing on her bladder so she suddenly started having accidents too. Once we sorted the constipation we were back on track in a week or so.

I don't think she's stressed about anything at the moment. Although she did have a tough start to the summer- her twin sister was very poorly and I was in hospital with DT for 3 weeks, so she didn't see much of me then (we weren't near home). i started toilet training her when we came home and after putting her on movicol she got it straight away.

I don't think she's constipated. She's been doing about 2 poos a day in her knickers. How can you tell if it's leakage? Would it be runny?

professor I hope your DS gets back on track soon too. It's very disheartening isn't it?!

Sorry that this is probably tmi. But are there food remains in the poo and is it very loose? If so it could be toddler's diarrhoea and causes accidents because they can't control it. DD has been diagnosed with this and she also has wee accidents as a result of it.

No, not particularly loose. I'll look up toddler diarrhoea and see if it fits...
