Potty success at home, now how do I get out and about?

DS is 2.10 and has been doing well for a couple of weeks with wees and poos and going of his own accord, proudly announcing, "my wee is starting to come!" But today was the first time we went out without a nappy. Managed to my amazement a wee on his potty in sainsbury's toilets - hurrah! But, I don't see many toddlers crouched on potties here, there and everywhere, so how do you go from crossing your fingers and hoping for the best, to being able to go out and have them use a public toilet? He doesn't go to nursery yet so doesn't have access to the child-size toilet, obviously we've got a training seat but it seems like there's so much for them to deal with already! But also, if I'm taking the potty, what do I do with the contents if he HAS to go when we're not near a public loo??

We have a potette 2in1 potty and toilet seat - it comes with liners which you can then tie up like a nappy sack and toss in the bin - we mainly use it as the toilet seat but it's been really good so far. You can buy it and additional liners from amazon.

For the first couple of weeks I had DS in a pull-up (or "just-in-case pants" as we call them) and didn't take a potty. I'd make sure he'd used the potty at home before leaving and then when we were out I'd just put him on a normal public toilet and hold him so that he felt like he wasn't going to fall in. The first couple of times he wasn't keen but he got the hang of it pretty quickly.

I've found that John Lewis and Debenhams parenting rooms/family toilets quite often have side-by-side normal and smaller toilets.

We carried a Potette around for the first month or so. But once he'd got the hang of going when we were out, we just sat him on ordinary toilets and held on to him like Internal says. He was a bit nervous initially but soon got used to it.
