DS now having lots of accidents

Hi all,

DS has been toilet trained in the day since just before he turned 3, wearing pull-ups overnight. He's now 3y 4m and has recently started having a fair few accidents. Usually wees but today has pooed in his pants too...

Any ideas why this could be and any tips to help please?

Happened with both of mine, I thought it was maybe them testing their control and maybe holding out a bit longer. We just waited for it to pass, which wasn't that long, and kept emphasising the importance of getting to the potty before they were really desperate to go, etc. Good luck!

Hi theonlygoth, I hadn't thought of it like that, thank you. DH & I are desperately trying not to lose patience and tell him off when it happens, it's just so frustrating as he was doing so well, not to mention the multiple washloads & frantic speed-cleaning / drying / ironing of trousers!

He hasn't had any accidents at nursery or pre-school, just at home & while we're out. Is that normal? Nothing has changed in our home situation, which makes me even more confused!

DS1 has done this too - was perfect, even waking up with a dry nappy, then for some reason regressed, and a year later is still needing a nappy for bed, and we still have the occasional week where he'll poo his pants for 3 days, despite generally not having an issue at all.

I almost think it's like he's taken his eye off the ball, got relaxed before the habits were really ingrained, and so started having accidents.

Well I did EC (i.e. potty training from birth) with mine, and they do constantly seem to regress now and then. IMHO it's important to try not to get cross: if they associate weeing with being told off, they might try to hold it in, which would make things worse! Not that I've always managed to stay patient, mind. Just know it's part of the normal learning process and will pass. My DS (3 years and 2 months) had been out of nappies in the day for over a year, and out of nappies at night for about 3 months, but wet himself the other day for no apparent reason

Wii I could have written your post. For us, it seemed to start after he moved up from under three's nursery to pre-school. He's also started tantrumming about having to go up to the toilet, which is so much fun. We're taking him to the Dr this evening to check that all is well down there, and then I think we're going to maybe try a sticker/reward chart for him to encourage him to make sure his wees are in the toilet.

I hope it passes for us all soon!

We are in the same situation and it's driving me bananas! She is teething at the moment which could be our reason but it's just doing my head in!!!
