Hello - DC has finally been referred to consultant and is going to get proper treatment for chronic constipation but we have been told to continue with Movicol. This morning for the first time - explosion….completely liquid - before school. Is this normal? What do I do? Poor thing has started nursery this week - don't want to keep them off but worried if it happens again…Don't want to lower dose but do I need to…?

How long have they been constipated? (I'm guessing a fair while?).

What colour was the explosion? If it was dark coloured and rather stinky, then they have passed old stool. If it was light coloured then it is likely the old stool remains and the fresh is going around the old.

Because movicol does break down and soften the stool, a liquid explosion can happen. I'd be inclined to maintain the dose and keep them home and pray it all happens. If they go to school, what's the back up plan with picking them up or with clean up at school?

Thanks StUmbrage. Light coloured so must be fresh stuff. Been constipated for ages - had a nightmare getting help, because DC only 3 so lots of 'it'll sort itself out'. FINALLY found someone to take seriously, refer to a consultant etc.
Only started pre-school this week, have explained to school there is a problem, and am sending in with spare pants but never had this morning's experience before…so don't know what to do. Can't keep off school forever, equally not sure school will be up for such an experience if it happens there…
