My Dd is 21 mo. Her language is pretty well developed but she shows no sign of readiness for potty training. She's fairly regular with poos etc but shows no awareness that she needs to go.

Now my DM has spent this afternoon telling me all about her friends DGS who is 2 months older and apparently completely clean and dry day and night after 5 days! Also apparently a little girl at the playgroup she takes DD to always wees in a potty and she's a few months younger.

I know all children get there at different points and my gut tells me if I start trying to train her now it'll be a stressful, messy disaster that will possibly impact on future attempts. I plan on getting a potty to have around the house but someone please tell me I'm not being unreasonable to not try yet.

YANBU. DS was nearly 3.5 when he was fully trained and it was a breeze- he was old enough to understand properly by that point and could easily tell you and be able to hold on if need be.

I really don't understand the urgencey, other than them needing to be trained before starting pre-school or something. My friend did the same with her two boys, we both agreed that waiting a bit longer was better- no accidents at all, compared to watching other mums at playgroup having to change clothes 3/4 times in a couple of hours because their children just weren't getting it yet.

I didn't do mine until they were over 3. I tried when they were 2 but it didn't work so I left them in pull ups for months so they could use the potty / toilet when they wanted to. So it was effectively months of gentle training but not involving any wee on their clothes or the floor. Nursery would get them to use the toilet too.

They swopped to pants when I was off work one Xmas (DS was 3.1 and DD was 3.4). I'm glad I left it later than most, very few accidents after the first couple of days.
