DS seems to have self-started potty training, I'm totally unprepared, can someone help me catch up please?!

Sorry - originally posted in chat then realised this forum existed!

DS is 22mths old. We weren't really planning on starting potty training till spring-ish or when he seemed ready. I am 20 weeks pregnant so thought summer would be good as I'll be off work then on mat leave.
Anyway on christmas eve DS, completely out of the blue, says 'mummy need wee-wee' and takes my hand, leads me to the bathroom where he points to toilet and says 'sit there'. A bit shocked I go with it, remove his trousers and nappy and hold him on toilet where he does a wee.
After this he has been telling us when he needs and/or has gone to toilet. after christmas we brought a potty which he sits on and tonight happily did another wee. We praised and encouraged him loads.
We are the sort of parents who like to read up, prepare etc. this has taken us by surprise. I don't want to rush or push DS but do feel he is telling me he is ready. How do I carry this on? What should we do to keep encouraging him but allowing him to move at his own pace? Any advice much appreciated!

Just go with it. Let him lead you.
Have you considered pants...... ie a method so he can pull clothing up and down rather than needing you to help him each time?

And if he looses interest next week, I'd put him back in nappies!

Hope number 2 is as easy to train as yours sounds. No1 was a nightmare!

He doesn't use it all the time, should I be asking him if he needs to go or just let him tell me when, so only using the potty at his choosing?
DH thinks maybe we should give a reward or something each time - i.e. a small sweet or something? should we do this or avoid it?
worried about getting it wrong and making it a negative experience for him!

OK, we hated them, but might it be worth getting some pullups, and showing him how to pull them up and down, and then leave him trouserless in the house, with toilet and potty available.
Praise sounds good enough as a reward.
Might be worth asking if he's not been for a bit, and you can see nappy/pullup isn't full, but don't stress if he says no!

My dd refused a nappy and self trained before 2, it was fine and we had no accidents at all. I always did the go for a wee before we leave the house, whenever we got some where and when ever we left some where. I recommend spare pants and trousers wherever you go and a carrier bag for the push chair and car seat just in case.
