how do you get them to poo on toilet and how do you do chocolate bribery??

day 2, going well, more wees on toilet than accidents and only one accident today :)

but can't get 2.5yo ds to poo on toilet though and i know hes holding it in. i told him hed get a chocolate if he did, which resulted in a mini tantrum when he didn't poo on toilet and didn't get said chocolate.

please help!

up the fibre - bit of all bran mixed in, or fruit, or both, lots of drinks.

make pooing easy. when he does it, then whip out the treats....eventually he'll understand that poo = sweets.

some children like seeing the reward beforehand. others don't.

i find it easier with a potty so they can run around pants off until the mood takes them, then they can sit unassisted....

There was something I read on Mumsnet about 'Mr Poo goes to Pooland, it's a downloadable colouring book (I can only imagine you'd need a lot of brown crayon).

In the end I didn't need to use the book I just talked in terms of Mr Poo wanting to go to Pooland to be with his friends and family. Any accident poos were put down the toilet and waved off on their way the things we do as parents! After about 2 weeks DD1 came to show me the poo that she'd done in the toilet so we could wave it bye-bye together.

Apart from night time poos we're sorted now.

I struggled for about three months with DS and I was loath to go down the bribery route. In the end, pooland (you are not making the child feel 'naughty' for not pooing/having an accident, but externalising the problem - blaming it on the Poo character) and star stickers worked. Make sure that he's not having trouble holding it in - lots of fibre, raisin and fluids, just in case - this was part of DS's problem. Oh and good luck, you WILL get there:)

DS used to wee in the toilet but ask for a nappy when he needed to poo.
One day he needed to do a big poo during a walk in the forest, miles away from the nearest nappy. He was forced to squat and push, and he had no problem using the toilet afterwards.

freddie thats the first time ive seen the poo goes to pooland story that ive heard so much about, its very good! the video is a bit difficult thought because the slides change too quickly! is there anywhere else i can get this in a slower version, or just teh story itself?

javotte i honestly wouldn't mind now if ds went down that route of needing a nappy to poo in for a while, and i even offered him a nappy, he said he wants to poo in his big boy pants

i gave him some raisins and juice so hopefully that will get things moving. but i'm going to have to seriiously decide whehter to continue now anyway because even with teh wees he has still not asked to go wee, we're just going by timing at the moment so i'm not sure if he's got enough bladder control to be ready for this...

he's doing ever so well. you're only a couple of days in - it's no fluke that it's going in the loo mostly.

really, do you think its worth continuing then? i'm just confused that its mostly going in teh toilet because i just keep taking him rather than because i even know that he needs to go, or that he knows that he needs to go...but he does try to go each time i take him and if he says no more wee wees i know that each time he has at least tried. but i honestly myself can't take many more days like this of taking him every 20-30 minutes, its starting to get to me....i have a nearly 4 month old too...

try taking him every hour. sooner if he starts showing he needs to go - every time he wees and is rewarded he learns something. If you know you are going to be sat down with the baby for a long time, take him before.

a child that age can probably go two hours or more once they've learned, it's just whilst they're learning that it needs to be more frequent.

he will learn as you go - like most things children do, learning takes time. Think how many times he'd have heard the word 'milk' before he asked for it.

Yes, space out the enforced trips. I know a child whose mother potty trained her by taking her every 20 minutes for weeks and weeks. A year after she is supposedly dry, she still has to go about every 20 minutes. I can't help thinking that they could be linked.

After two days, when DD seemed to 'get' it, we only did enforced trips before events - so before lunch, before sitting down to watch a half hour tv programme, etc. I think it is an important part of potty training that they learn to recognise when their bladder needs to empty, as opposed to when they can squeeze a bit out.

Of course, it is very different if they are distressed, not conscious of releasing, etc, etc.

Sounds stupid, but are you standing over your son, promising him chocolate if he poos? I am not sure I could manage one if someone did that to me! We had the 'poo in pants' issue with DD. She used to take herself off somewhere to poo in her pants. She also literally never pooed in the potty. I think she found it quite disgusting (and I don't blame her!). We solved it eventually by telling her that, if she needed a poo, she should try and go on the toilet. And we left the room to give her a chance when she did a wee. Once she'd done it in the toilet once, we only had one or two poo accidents ever again.

Thanks for this. Tomorrow I'll try every 45minutes and see how we go. I see your point re the 20 minute thing!

I think maybe I need to tone down the ' please do a poo-pleeaase' thing, you're right!

How can I make him sit for long enough?

Well, I think it depends if he is a mad, crazy bounce off the walls type (DD2 is, I dread potty training...). With DD1 I just used to say, I'm just going to leave you for a moment. Sit there a second and see if there is any poo which wants to come out. I would pop outside the door. Most of the time she would 'mummmmmy' immediately, but once or twice she sat there and finally it happened.

We also had a chocolate bar in the fridge. We didn't talk about it around the potty/toilet. She just chose one at the shop one day (a big one, the sort she isn't normally allowed!) and we talked about how, when she was a big girl who had done a poo on the potty, she would be allowed to eat it. Then we didn't mention it again, but from time to time she would talk about how, once she had pooed on the toilet, she could have it. I am not sure it was that relevant in the end though, she forgot it the day she finally managed.

He is quite an active toddler, he loves to run around the place! Only way to get himto sit still is cbbc, and bc we're not using a potty ( his choice) I can't sit him on a potty in front of that. I might try reading stories again, that's worked on and off to keep him there...actually now I think about it im contemplating taking the laptop to the toilet for an episode of Arthur...

I used to get dd to press her belly button, that was how the poo came out. Then when we flushed the loo, we'd send it on holiday to the seaside

Hi just wanted to update, we had two big poos on the toilet yesterday!! I sat him on toilet with the ipod playing one of his fave cartoons and told him he could watch it while doing his poo, and he did! Gave him some chocolate after:) half an hour later he did the same! I dontknow if we've cracked it but it was a result anyway.:)

Thanks everyone for ideas and edgar and you'll laugh for your encouragement, you helped enormously! I hope you have a warm feeling in your tummy today for having made such a difference and for helping me not give up!!

That's brilliant! you might well find that you have a few accidents, but like I said,in our case once DD1 had figured out how to do it on the toilet, she didn't want to do it in a nappy/pants any more.

Well done on the iPod. I fear I may be rocking in a corner when I need to potty train DD2 (only 15 months, so some way off). It would be down the toilet, or she'd have climbed the cistern, or...... Let's hope she calms down in the next year or so!
