Wee's in the toilet, dry at night but still poo's his pants Aaaarggghhh!

And he starts nursery at School this September.

Why does he still do this? He sometimes manages to do a poo on the toilet and I praise him and say well done when he does, of I think he needs to do one (farting lots) I send him to the loo. Maybe they come too fast and he doesn't make it? I don't know anymore I need some ideas to try.

Please please please give me some ideas. My DD actually mastered potty training late but she didn't do this.

I don't have any advice, just want to let you know that this potty training lark does take time. My DS (4) is not dry at night yet and cannot poo in the toilet, he has to use a potty. I think he feels a bit unsure of sitting on the big toilet because he is so little. I'm trying to find a decent child's seat for on top of the toilet seat in the hope this will help.

Don't panic!!!!!!!!!!! A friend of mine's DD was exactly the same. On her first day at school, she came in in the afternoon, told her mum she was a big girl now and went for a poo by herself, on the toilet. And has done so ever since.It would appear that peer pressure is a wonderful thing.

DS (4 in a couple of weeks) was potty trained for wees and nights about 18 months ago. Poos have taken much longer, but, after lots of accidents, tears and with holding, he is just beginning to get the hang of it now (I know this doesn't help you, but thank goodness for September birthday).

I have a family toilet seat, so there's a smaller children's seat that comes down for them iyswim? Very secure and doesn't move.

He wanted to be like his big sister and go on the toilet which all helps tbh.

He poo's twice a day, sometimes 3 times and it's not at the same time everyday, so I do not have the foresight to pop him on the toilet in readiness with a book, before it happens. So there are a lot of yucky pants to deal with

This morning my finger went straight into it as well, whilst trying to deal with it. It's like adult poo as well

If there are no medical problems then something small might help, I got a stamp pen when my DS went through a stage of wetting himself I put a stamp on his hand everytime he had a wee in the toilet and he never had another accident. It was just something silly and he loved it.

You have my sympathy OP. my ds pooed several times a day then we switched to lactofree milk (tastes like normal milk, at tesco, sainsbo etc) and switched to soy icecream and a few minor changes and his bowel settled right down to 1x day. I think he was mildly lactose intolerant and was quite often caught unawares (fecal urgency is the technical term i think!) .

To move on from the potty we came back from holiday and I hid them- total cold turkey. He was pretty upset (eg snuck into bathroom and wee'd in shower one day!).
I also used bribes constantly and unashamedly. Eg
1x dairy free chic button for wee in loo, 2x for a poo! He is 3.6 now and gets rewards for wiping his bottom and washing his hands.

PQ77 my son is 3.8. He's not lactose intolerant but he is a gannet and is always eating/ hungry. I have tried to cut down on his fruit intake and he has 1 banana and 1 apple a day now. I was hoping that would help

I suppose I could try lactose free, although he won't be pleased as he likes his Babybel's and yogurts

I had the same problem and when I mentioned it to the Health Visitor she said to get him to sit down on the potty or toilet and blow bubbles as it 'opens' everything up and helps. It also makes the time sat on the toilet fun and they don't get bored.

I was also a naughty Mummy and made him help me tidy up when he made a mess. He never did it again once I made him do that!

I'm having a nightmare training my son!
The book I'm reading says boys are often harder to potty train for poo as they don't recognise the bowel movements in the same way. My sister had a nightmare with my nephew too as he was often constipated as a toddler so when it came to potty training and he was asked to do a poo he'd be scared of the pain and just wouldn't go...causing more constipation!

lactose/digested differently but you can get lactose free versions of
both if very sensitive) .

we just know that 2 beakers of
Cows milk a day = lots of trips to the loo!

Ds wasn't even dry in the day when he started play school at 3, but his first day was the last day he was wet - amazing what peer pressure does

I would send him off to 'try' after meals and see if that helps.

DD wasn't dry at night until 4.9 years old and was still lifted for a wee at 11pm on my way to bed. DS seems to have a humongous bladder and I do not even lift him at 11pm he goes right through dry from bedtime. That is amazing for a boy at his age. I know this. But man those poo's drive me nuts

my dd is 3.4 and is dry night and day but still poos her pants, even when i ask her if she needs to go. She prefers to use the toilet instead of a potty and i don't think her diet is to blame. She never wants to sit on the loo long, shes always too eager to get off so she can press the liquid soap. I might try the blowing bubbles idea, sounds like it could keep her on the loo a bit longer.

But the poos, oh the poos!

Just now was a perfect example. He obviously needed a poo about 2 hours ago but denies it, always has something better to do.

Sometimes I can encourage him onto the potty but once he sits down it is like he completely loses the urge to poo, it's quite bizarre.

He usually asks me for a nappy [a pull up actually] and I do oblige him because otherwise there is likely to be a poo explosion on the floor [from prior experience]. However I tell him that if he wants to he can pull the "pants" down and do a poo on the potty or toilet like he does a wee... He listens to me and you can see him considering this... but...

...for next 2 hours he will get the urge to poo which prompts him to run around in a circle for a while until the urge passes

This continues until I suddenly hear a sound of stamping feet as the urge to poo becomes too strong to ignore and his anal sphincter cannot hold the poo back anymore. He then makes a quick dash to the back of the sofa, crouches down and loud grunts akin to a woman giving birth to a ten pounder ensue.

Then quiet and a sheepish little boy pokes his head around the sofa to see if anyone was listening/watching [How could we not, it is so dramatic!].

He will then ask me to clean him up.

DS starts nursery in September and I actually think it will take peer pressure to convince him to start pooing on either the potty or toilet.

You know things had been going pretty well since I posted this; more poo's in the loo, less in his pants but clearly today he had to humiliate me with a poo catastrophe at the Princess Diana Memorial Fountains in Hyde Park. I'd just like to say to anyone who saw me and said incident, I am truly truly sorry.

I felt I should come back and update after a poo nightmare since May no less! Potty trained him in May at age 3.4 years. But he has finally cracked it since beginning Nursery at age 3.8 years. The relief is huge and not having to deal with yucky pants
