DD won't poo or pee at all....how worried should I be?

Day 2 with dd aged 26 months. V keen to wear knickers and sit on potty but no wees or poos and no accidents. She did wee in nappy over night but I am worried about potential danger of holding in wee and poo for long periods. Any advice? Thanks

Give her plenty to drink - that should sort the wee issue.

The poo can be more tricky and if you know she's withholding I would talk to your HV or even better your GP now.

You might also want to start up a sticker chart with a reward for a certain number of wees/poos in the potty. A small treat each time is also a good motivator.

Thanks Juneau. Got the sticker chart rocking already and she loves it - but I may have peaked too soon by awarding a sticker for just sitting on potty rather than producing wee or poo? Upping the fluids now and will see if that forces the wee out. Kind of assuming that she will poo in nighttime nappy if not today? If no poo by day 3 will seek med advice - although HVs rarer than hen's teeth in my bit of London...

We have a wee! Although next to the potty rather than in it...if she doesnt wee or poo in the potty at all by end day 3 I am tempted to stop for a month and try again..is that giving up too easily? Am of the mind that if they are ready they will start using the potty successfully at least a couple of times on days one or two?

She may just not be ready and if she's not 'getting it' I would back off rather than it become miserable for either of you.

LOL at the pee by the potty. My niece did a poo in her shoe once, which I'm sure was funnier as a story to tell than at the time!

Ha ha re the shoe poo. On more serious note, think am about to abandon training. DD clearly in need of wee and poo, trembling and crying and refusing to relax and let them out. Just very very upset. Much better to back off than make her ill???

Blimey, DD1 wasnt like this!?

Anyone else have this experience? She clearly has control but not psychologically ready?

I would back off. All kids are different and all are ready in their own time. My DS1 wasn't ready to potty train until he was over three. I'm hoping DS2 isn't quite such a late bloomer, but who knows!
