big bummed boy won't fit on potty; are toilet training seats any good?

DS is nearly 3 and is tall and big, and looks so uncomfy sitting on potty, also the thomas the tank "throne" style potty makes his willy stick over the edge, rather defeating the object!
Is it possible to train straight onto the toilet using one of the toddler seats? Any recommendations for a comfy one for the large of bottom?

DD has a cheapy boots one which seems a little larger than the usual size - but possibly not quite big enough for your DS!

I know lots of people do train straight to toilet with a toddler seat and step. I think the ones with handles at the side are recommended for first timers as it feels a bit less precerious if they can hang on? I'm sure I've seen a padded Cars one like that if that would convince him it's a great idea!

Yes, I trained my two using both a potty and a childrens toilet seat.
Potties can be a bit of a pain to clean out every time, so getting them to go directly into the loo is much easier anyway.
Make sure the seat is fairly stable as many children feel a little worried about falling in the loo in the beginning.

Aah, my ds is also 'large of bottom'. We moved on from potties to toddler toilet seats quite quickly. However, just a warning for you, I couldn't find a toddler toilet seat that was big enough. If he was needing a poo and a wee, if he was sitting so he could wee then some of the poo was going on the toddler seat. Likewise, if he sat further forward then his wee was shooting out everywhere. The most comfortable one was the babybjorn one but the 'hole' in the middle wasn't big enough. I also looked at the toddler seats that fit inside adult seats (if that makes sense) but the internal 'hole' was still too small. Needless to say, he now uses a step and sits on the normal toilet seat and is just fine. Good luck.

DS is big bummed too we had to go straight to the toilet with no trainer seat. TBH he was fine without the trainer seat

We never used a potty for DS1 and don't intend to for DS2 either. Straight on toilet, much easier. We used padded seats with handles.

Twas a very long time ago, but my two ds's both used Boots own brand seat that fitted over the ordinary loo seat - one small and skinny of bum, one with booty a la Beyonce, neither with any problems! I never had a potty as I just couldn't face the thought of cleaning it out

dd hated sitting on the potty as found it understandably uncomfortable and moved onto a toddler toilet seat and we never looked back.

We had exactly the same problem! Ds was coming up for 3 but is tall / big for his age and normal potties were just too small.

After some internet research we got this Baby Bjorn potty chair and he fitted comfortably in it. Pricey but worth it to have both exits 'contained'! I think the problem is exacerbated for a boy as you've got to have that willy safely in!

We had a similar problem with toilet training seats though as a lot of them only have the same size hole as a potty iyswim. We had one from John Lewis (although I can't find it in their website now ). It was their own brand and padded anyway without any handles or lips / splash guards or whatnot and ds fitted in that fine.

The good thing about them being slightly bigger is that from our first nappy free outing, ds has been ok on public toilets without a training seat and can hold himself up pretty well (until he gets over confident and decides he doesn't need to hold on!)

Yes DS also couldn't be doing with pottys and went straight to toilet seats - worth the occasional spraying incident not to have to bother with cleaning out pottys IMO, and much easier when out and about. We had a mothercare seat which fitted inbetween the bowl and the normal seat - cheap and easy.

Oh, and if it helps, we had this potty and this training seat from Mothercare at first (I started off thinking cheap ) and ds didn't fit in either of those.

Also, I know several people who've gone straight to the toilet to train so it can definitely be done, but if you're getting a training seat just choose carefully to make sure it's big enough
