Hi, DS is 3 and we've started potty training him today. We were hoping to wait until he woke up one morning and said 'I'm done with nappies thanks very much Mummy - let's go wild with the pants', but this hasn't happened so we thought we'd just try him with nothing on at first and then pants and see how it goes.

Just wondered if anyone else was starting too and wanted to go through it together?

We've done various bits of nappy free time for months with varying amounts of success, but only ever an hour or two here and there with no consistency to see how he was doing and whether we thought he knew when he was weeing or pooing. It's only recently that I've thought that he actually does know hence deciding to give it a go today.

We had a quiet weekend so thought 'no time like the present!'

Now a couple of times in the week we'd had no nappy on and a fair bit of success in the potty. Wednesday = lots of mopping up wees but a few 'hits' at the end of the afternoon. Thursday was better with no accidents. but this was still doing everything bare bum!

Today we were doing pretty well this morning. Everything going in the potty and no accidents, so after lunch we thought we'd try adding pants into the equation. previously pants = accidents (I wonder if he would forget it wasn't a nappy?) so we never persevered with them, but we have this afternoon. Certainly more accidents this afternoon, which is I think a mixture of being tired and the 'pant effect' and we had a very rough few hours between say 3 and 5. Then we've had a few more wees on the potty and going a bit better this evening.

We're planning more of the same tomorrow but we have a birthday party to go to in the afternoon and I'm in a bit of a predicament about that in as much as I don't want to go back to nappies and confuse / demoralise him, but equally don't want loads of accidents at my friend's DDs party so as yet we're undecided. I think at the moment we'll be erring on the side of a nappy as it's just not fair if he has an accident in the middle of the party?

Anyway, anyone who wants to join me for the ride, please come aboard :-)

I'll have Wine, Brew and Biscuit to help the journey go along!

Biscuitsandtea · 28/10/2011 14:37

Oh grrrrrr to your DH Shaz [hsad][hangry].

I would be soooooo cross with my DH if he did that [hconfused].

Shaz2011 · 28/10/2011 14:43

Yes I know I was proud of him Smile I think I need words with dh Angry

rathlin · 29/10/2011 08:43

Shaz, are you sure you're not married to my DH as that's the kind of thing he would do! DS was at home with DH yesterday and there was one accident so not too bad. I am very tempted to start leaving the nappy off at night as he has been dry in the morning now for weeks but need to get bed protection sorted out. Wonder what inspired me to buy two packets of nappies a couple of weeks ago which will never be used. Hope everyone has a nice dry weekend!

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 09:11

Sounds great Rathlin. Smile

Another accident free day for DS at nursery including their Halloween party which went right up to 7pm which was good :)

Hope Everyone else is good

Shaz2011 · 29/10/2011 09:17

Biscuit that's great Smile
Did u find ds improved when he went nursery or did it set him back ?

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 09:43

He was broadly the same I would say?

But he's been at that nursery for a while and is well settled in his class. And they have v easy access to the loos

Shaz2011 · 29/10/2011 11:16

Well we have taken a step back ds now won't wear pants only pull ups & if I put him in pants he don't ask for potty he just stands there & does it so I don't know what to do Sad any suggestions ?

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 11:22

Could try bare bum for a bit around the house? See if that rebuilds his confidence?

Just marking my place here so I can come back and read for tips when I get more time later.

My DS is now 3.2 and has been able to use a potty and toilet for months but he doesn't WANT to! He has been out of the house once with me and once for my mum without a nappy and has been accident free but he says he likes his nappy.

We have problems when we introduce pants as he just wees in them but he does sometimes ask "am I wearing a nappy or pants?" to check now. I'm wondering whether I need to just say, no more nappies and let him get grumpy for a bit or leave it a bit longer. His nursery are glad to help, as they keep pointing out, he is the last one of his group to be potty trained - no pressure then Grin but he often gets in the car after his morning there and says, "oh good we are going home now I can put my nappy back on!"

BlackCatinaWitchesHatonaBroom · 29/10/2011 11:36

Morning all, We had a few days off but giving it a go this morning.

Just wondered, Has anyone got a fancy potty? One of those that looks like a chair or an animal? They have some in the Argos catalogue.

I am wondering if it would encourage a reluctant toddler to sit on potty.
Thought I'd ask if anyone had tried this before I decide whether to buy one.

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 12:57

Hmmm, funny morning today. DS did one wee on the loo (but only at our suggestion because he hadn't been since he got up) and then has just had a wee accident out Sad. I know he's bound to have accidents but feel a bit Sad as he was doing so well.

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 13:18

Oh dear, accident worse than I thought Sad. While being cleaned up by DH he did a poo on the floor of the toilet cubicle after saying no when DH asked if he wanted to sit on the toilet, and then said he wanted to put a nappy on SadSadSadSadSad

Well taking a step back today & gone bare bum & so far we have had 1 wee & 1 poo in potty so we will see how the rest of the day goes & maybe put him in pants tomorrow if no accidents today SmileSadAngryHmmConfused

Shaz2011 · 29/10/2011 15:05

Spoke to soon Sad ds just peed over the floor so looks like we r going back to step 1 again AngrySad

BlackCatinaWitchesHatonaBroom · 29/10/2011 18:32

DD has had another day of "Nothing". I took her nappy off at 10.00 ish this morning and she has done nothing (Unless I haven't found it). She must have very good control!.

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 18:53

Well Blackcat I think your dd certainly has good bladder control! Just need to find the 'empty' switch!

Our day improved after our disaster earlier. Took DS swimming and he asked to get out of the pool for a poo and did a poo on the loo Smile. Then he did a wee on the loo before we left the pool (at my suggestion). Then we were driving home and he said he needed a wee so we stopped at a garden centre and he did a huge wee, but managed to hold it in from when he said to when we'd driven to the garden centre, parked and found the loos, so that was good as I think he must have been busting (often is after swimming).

Then a wee on the loo at home this evening. He's almost redeemed himself for pooing on the floor! BlushShock

I was doubtful whether to stop at the garden centre too because every time we get in the car he says he needs a wee and then does nothing if we stop - the words 'over a barrel' spring to mind!!

That's very good everyone wish I could say that from this end but he has been bare bum all day & we had 2 big accidents & 2 wee accidents in pants but we had a wee & poo in potty before bath SadSmile

BlackCatinaWitchesHatonaBroom · 29/10/2011 20:21

DD did her wees when she had her nappy on just before we put her to bed so she is going, just not in the potty or on the floor.
I think maybe if we try tomorrow we will have to take her nappy off as soon as she is up out of bed although she still isn't very keen on sitting on the potty.

How old are your dc again?

I think I remember Biscuits said her DS was 3.

My DD will be 3 next month.

Biscuitsandtea · 29/10/2011 20:28

Yep, DS is 3.1 now Blackcat

OP posts:
Shaz2011 · 30/10/2011 06:37

Blackcat my ds is 2.1
What a morning got woken up at 6 by ds saying he needed a wee Grin I was well pleased shame about the time ?

Biscuitsandtea · 30/10/2011 08:16

Bobbins. Was feeling quite chopper after DS woke with a dry nappy and asked to go to the toilet and did a great big wee there. However he's just done a poo in his pants for no apparent reason Sad

And it was a gross one SadSad
