DS is 2.8yrs, starting nursery in Sept and not showing any desire to potty train.

DS won't sit on a potty. He says it hurts. He several varieties of potty. He prefers to sit on the loo but he closes his legs to wee wouldn't go in the loo anyway. DH has tried weeing with him - both stood up at the loo. DS looks at him like some idiot. He rarely comments that he is wet.

We have been talking about starting potty training next week (literally just removing the nappy and going for it) because DH is off for 2 weeks but since DS shows no interest al all I think we could be setting ourselves up for a fall.

Please someone tell me what to do. I feel he has to be sorted by September.

he doesn't HAVE to be

nurseries, pre schools etc cannot refuse to accept a child child because they are not trained

have a go anyway, with DH being off it makes sense

if not, leave a month or two and try again

No no don't worry. I tried ds at 2y6m he was entirely uninterested at 2y9m he potty trained himself, simple.

Ds prefers a larger potty because he's v tall and the littler ones have his kness up by his ears.

Mainly though do not worry, I promise you he will come to it. He is only a baby still. September is a very long time away. We tried ds at 2y6m and he had no interest 3 months later he trained himself.

Just in sympathy Noseynoo, my dd has similar problems with potties. She says they're uncomfy. I tried a big one from Mothercare but she still doesn't really like sitting on it for more than a moment or two and I've noticed she has red marks on her bum if she sits on it for longer - is that normal, people?
She is 2.6 years and she's quite a big girl- in clothes for 4 year olds. Health visitor says we'll probably go straight to grown up loo but at the moment, she wont sit on it for even a moment. She's still scared of the big loo and doesn't like the hole even if I put a nice trainer sit on it. Think she thinks she's going to fall in. So we're stuck unpotty trained for the moment...Cheered by haudyerwheesht tale of it being easier at 2.9 than 2.6 - hoping for the same result :)

I'd leave it a couple of months. I have justed started potty training Ds this week and he is 2.11yrs. He's shown no inclination to potty train but as he's had 3wks off nursery for Easter, I decided to go for it. By day 3 he was taking himself off to pee and poo on the potty and loo. He's not had an accident since day 2. I do think when they're ready, it's a relatively quick and easy process.

Ds's nursery takes them from 1 so lots of children in nappies. I was getting subtle pressure from the nursery but if you push them too early, it's so much harder. I'd wait for the summer personally. Good luck!

I'm just not sure how to know when he's ready. DD was clearly interested in using a potty. DS thinks it's a hat! Tempted to just take off nappy and go for it.

Dd wasn't ready at 2.5 but suddenly got it at 2.8. We're now having a go at training ds who is 2.7 and starting pre-school in Sept. He seemed quite keen for a couple of days but is now (day 6) completely uninterested in going to the toilet and happy to sit/stand in wet pants without saying anything so we're going back to nappies for a bit. I think I'll be leaving it til the summer holidays now - hopefully he will get the hang of it quicker as he'll be a bit older then :)
