has any one had a child go to school in nappies???

hi my ds will be 4 at the end of aug and is due to start school in sept. he is still in nappies at the mo i have tried the potty training for the past year or so got as far as him wearing pants and doing well for wee's but he kept pooing them (usually whilst at playschool). however have now had to revert back to nappies again as he would just wee and poo them when and wherever he was. I think some of it is pure lazyness as if he runs around naked he will dart to the toilet for a wee, or open the back door a wee out there until i discovered what he was doing and kept the back door locked!

so just wondered what happens if i cant get him traind by sept?? should i send him in nappies/pull ups?? or is there hope?

My advice is take the nappies away for good as you are giving him very mixed messages here. Poos take a bit longer - I know they are messy but be patient and he will get there.

My DS is 4 and is struggling but I have taken away nappies away except at night and am persevering. It has been 2 months and he is still having lots of accidents. Boys do take a bit longer apparently.

I'm afraid school won't take him unless he is out of nappies. It's just not part of their job description to change nappies.

I personally think you have made a big mistake reverting, and you need to go back to pants asap, unless there are other issues which you haven't mentioned in your OP. I'm surprised the pre-school allows him in, in nappies tbh. Ours doesn't, but they are prepared to deal with the occasional mishap during the first term or so.

Nikki is right - you need to persevere. I know it can get very stressful, but if you stick with it, you'll get there by Sept.

i know i should have kept with the pants but the playschool were getting a bit fed up dealing with it (he poos alot up to 3-4 times a day but mainly in the mornings and thats when he is at playschool). they dont mind changing nappies as long as the parents take in nappies, wipes ect.

i also have 2 other ds one is a year younger that him also in nappies and the other is 7 (with ADHD) and i am also 7 months pregnant with dc4.

i have tried sticker charts, chocolate rewards, lucky dip style of rewards all of which have failed as he is just not interested

think ill try the pants again at the weekend and see how he goes!

Thye have to take children in nappies now by law. Are they trying to help you? They should be. DS's preschool encouraged me to take him out of nappies and are still patient even though he is still wetting and soiling every now and then.

You NEED to go cold turkey. Have you seen your GP and health visitor? Believe me I know your pain as I am going through similar but putting him back in nappies each time just means he knows that if he doesn't bother this time he will get the nappies back. Don't "try again at the weekend" just do it and don't go backwards - yes I know the washing is a pain in the arse!

Talk to the preschool and ask for more help. What are they doing/saying that makes you think they are getting fed up? It is part of their job to deal with it IMO. Don't feel bad - they shouldn't be holding you back here.

September is such a long way off! Don't panic. DD2 was the same and then one day it just clicked. I'm sure he'll be fine by then.

The health visitor is coming out on the 17th to have a chat about it so hopefully that will help.

The playschool said that they thought that maybe he should wear pull ups/nappies as he was pooing several times in one session and a couple of times he managed to get it all over the floor too. hence why he went back into them.

my ds is also very shy so prehaps he's not that confident in asking for help to go to the toilet when he needs it.

twinkle, I can't offer any words of advice I'm afraid but just wanted to say that I too have been told that schools cannot turn away a child because they are still in nappies. Unfortunately, there will be issues over who changes them as in some schools they are not allowed to have a child in this sort of one to one situation and also as it isn't in anyone's job description to change nappies so you would need a very understanding teacher/TA who would take it on.

My DD is 4 at the end of the month and still won't poo in the loo but then nor will she soil herself. She is hugely distressed if you try and get her to poo on the loo and is in obvious physical pain trying to hold her poo in until you put a nappy on.

we think she may have been traumatised last year after I had a complication following minor gastro surgey and blacked out completely and collapsed off the loo on to the floor at home when there was no one else around. trying to get some sort of help for her is proving difficult and is more appropriate in another thread but just wanted to know you are not alone in trying to get your DC ready for school.

I know its a few months away but not only have they got to be able to poo in the loo but they've also got to be able to wipe their bums properly otherwise they will just end up sitting in dirty pants. I'm starting to get very worried!
