Potties for boys - how do you stop the wee going on the floor

ds sits on the potty - he ends up weeing all over the floor because his willie seems to be in the wrong place/the potty pushes it up...
Am I being unbelievably stupid - has anyone else had this problem?

Is he sitting on the potty the right way round? I had DS sitting the girl's way for a while because i didn't realise.

Get him to push his winkie down too, this helps.

Oh - now I feel really dumb - is there a boys and a girls way round? My dd potty trained herself in no time. and he is keen to sit on the potty - but his legs are so chubby and his winkie so short (poor boy) that pushing it down doesn't work.... We have both an Ikea potty and a baby bjorn one - do you think there is a better designed one for boys?

Get a child toilet seat and step and then he can sit on the toilet, or better still, stand at it and get a ball that he can aim at in the toilet pan.

I feel super stupid.. I have 2 boys. One who is 5 and I never knew there was a girls and boys position on the potty....

I was going to suggest forgot the potty and get one of those seats for your loo and a booster step for them to reach the loo.

Don't feel dumb, i didn't realise either.The back for your DD should be the front for your DS, the taller side. I just used the Thomas one and the Iggle Piggle one with the lid, both from Mothercare. I don't think it matters really. Ds does have to hold his winkie down the whole time he is weeing though otherwise it goes off like a garden sprinkler.

we have tried sitting him on the seat on the toilet - and exactly the same problem as the potty...maybe standing up is the answer- but what if he wants a wee and a poo...

Just told DH and he said the same

they have to be taught to point willy down into loo/ potty. then latter you have to teach them to tug their foreskin to make sure the "hole" is pointing down rather than side ways... I left this to DH ... but if you can't YOU may have to .

Waaaahh? There's a boys way round on the potty?

DS now completely potty trained (3.5) for a year now but he always sat same way round as his older sis.

I just used to get him to tuck his willy down - hold it down whilst he weed. In a way this was good as it meant i got him into the habit of washing his hands after every trip to the potty.

And thank god, because you should see where he puts his hand when he climbs up to do a stand up wee in the loo now [yuck emoticon]

I got 2 potty training books from library and neither enlightened me regarding gender potty positioning

I'm having same issue with DS.
DP is amazed that I didn't teach DS to hold his willy in potty / pointing into toilet (it's the same spraying across floor issue when he sits on the toilet), apparently it's the same as operating a hose pipe.

It does help when he pushes it down when prompted but also tends to lead to distracting manhandling!

You need a potty with a high bit at the front (some are really low). Boots bog standard ones are good. and teach him to push it down when he sits down.

Some potties are just tiny (Mothercare, I mean you). the Ikea ones are cheap and cheerful and come up high enough at the front to stop the inevitable wee spraying :)

Oh yes, what choufleur said also. A high splashguard at the front is crucial.

The baby bjorn ones are great, imho.

Just looked at the vast choice of potty on the mothercare website. No wonder i have confused everyone about the girl / boy way round. The designs are all so different.

Wait, I've just learnt about the boy/girl way 1 minute ago.
What about toilet seats - should I put mine the other way around? Because that's more of a problem with weeing over the edge!

Answer to the original - poke his willy down, and encourage him to do it himself. DS does it himself, and I think that nursery taught him (presumably the nursery staff are encouraged to avoid touching willies under any circumstance, including potty training? My Mum pointed that out to me - they must have taught him to hold it because he does it every time and won't wee until he's done it.)

I genuinely don't believe there is a boy and girls way.

Anyway, I have the same problem. DS has his legs together with his penis on his legs regardless of whether he's on potty or toilet. Therefore as yet he has not weed in the potty. I can't see how I get him to open his legs to let penis fall down, his thighs are too big.

In my experience potties and boys don't really mix! DS did it standing on a step straight into the toilet almost from day 1

I'd say just get used it to it.

Once they've moved on from not getting it into the potty they then graduate to standing up and not getting into the toilet.

I second the Baby Bjorne potty for boys!

Oh.........all 3 of my DS's have just been taught to "pont it down" from the word go - no problems at all.

OP I know exactly how you feel.
DS (3 next month) will happily sit on the loo/potty with his legs apart for a wee. We point it down as far as possible but it still goes over the top of both the potty and the toilet seat and I bought the hightest splashguard potty I could find.
I don't want to teach him standing up i've only been doing pants free at home training properly for the last week or so and as yet he's only done 1 poo in the toilet so I don't want to confuse him.

We have carpet in our downstairs loo so I bought one of those plastic topped tablecloths and cut it to size so at least it's nice and quick to mop up
