Fearing I've missed the boat - DD 5.6 still in nappies at night

Just that really - her nappy is very full every morning. She's a heavy sleeper. We've tried to go without nappies for periods of time on a few different occasions but after 3 or 4 nights in a row having to get up and change her bed have given up. She's been completely toilet trained during the day since about age 3. Anyone had the same? Any ideas would be very welcome. Thanks

it's perfectly normal. night time enuresis is not even considered a problem until at least 7. seriously.

if she is still persistently wet at night at 7, the gp will prescribe meds to mimic the hormone (desmo or similar) or you can try an enuresis alarm (these work for children who are very deep sleepers, rather than those who aren't producing the hormone)

but really, she's too little to worry at the moment.

only one of my three was dry at night at that point. there will be loads of kids in her class in pull ups. honestly.

Thanks madwoman. I know it's not considered a clinical problem at this stage I guess I just wondered if there were any useful tips out there on what other simple things to try. I'm not all that bothered really and neither is she. It just would be nice to get rid of 1 set of nappies as I have 3 in nappies at present. I might consider an enuresis alarm down the track though. Thanks for that.

Read some other threads on here. But generally:
7 drinks a day, no 'dark' drinks. No drin 1.30 hr before bed.
You can measure wee to see if bladder is big enough (this can be an issue as it means child can't go the whole niht without a wee).
But as has been said - don't worry, its pretty normal. We have just got ds out of nappies and he's 7 (I am so pleased and so is he....alarm did the trick!)

My dd was about this age. She was and still is a really heavy sleeper. We tried not giving her a bedtime drink. taking her to the toilet when she was asleep, waking her and taking her to the toilet, putting her in knickers to see if she woke up but nothing made any difference.

She just stopped all of a sudden and had a few dry nights in a row and that was it.

She still wets the bed sometimes but hardly ever wakes. I could count on one hand the number of times she has got up in the night to to to the loo. I think it's two. I think it was just a matter of her bladder being big enough to get her through the night.

Thanks ladies. She does have a bedtime drink although I've tried in the past to cut this down with little effect - that was some time ago - it's probably worth trying again now. We did try the 'dream wee' at 10pm but worried that this might have been reinforcing the sensation of wee-ing whilst asleep so stopped doing it ( it wasn't making any difference anyway). I guess I'll continue with the 3 lots of nappies for now then. thanks everyone for your input.

What size nappies have you been using on your DD? We have been struggling to find large ones.

Better wet nappies than wet sheets! (Voice of experience here - DS didn't dry up until 8ish, and still has fairly frequent accidents). I think DriNites do larger size overnight pullups (I can remember buying then in age 6, and think they went beyond that). Big supermarkets usually have them.

I would get rid of pull ups and go for brolly sheets - and bare bottom. Therefore if she does wet the bed no-one is bothered in the night so you all some sleep. If you have 3 brolly sheets you can have one on the bed, one in the wash and one drying. We also get dd up at about 11pm as have discovered she does all of her wees in the first part of the night. Really would recommend this method - brolly sheets also have stickers and stuff to encourage. It does a lot for their self-esteem to get them out of nappies. Good luck.

Tried my dd who is nearly 4 for the first time last night without a nappy.Shes been dry during the day since two and a half but always has a wet nappy in the morning.Woke her up for her to say " mummy I weed in my sleep" she sleeps that soundly she didnt wake up to realise she was wet.Tesco have just started doing a size six nappy-my dd is as big as the average 5 yr old.I feel better knowing its not just my child-am starting to feel a bit of a failure in the dry at night department !
