I started a thread http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/potty_training/1059227-3-year-old-knows-when-he-s-pooing-and here about problems potty training DS. Basically, he knows when he's pooing, I'm pretty sure he knows when he's weeing, he can hold it for ages but he refuses to sit on the potty or toilet. Gentle persuasion, bribery, leaving him to it...none of it is working. He has the odd pee on the potty but it's like he lets a little bit out, then has a big accident 5 mins later. He's still having 3 or 4 accidents a day, wee and poo.

I'm fed up! There's another load of washing in the machine and the cushions are all off the sofa, having been weed on again!

I'm starting to think he's just not ready and maybe we need to go back to nappies for a bit. However, everyone else (i.e. DP, my mum, nursery) think we should just stick with it and he'll get it eventually. We have made some progress I think but it seems to be 2 steps forward, 1 step back...I'm also fed up of the constant battles to get him onto the potty when it's blatantly obvious he needs to to.

What should we do? He'll be three tomorrow. I'm torn between wishing we'd started at 18 months, and wishing we'd waited another few months!

Give yourself a break and put him back in nappies for the time being. 3yos can be hugely strong-willed

He will come to no harm from being in nappies a while longer. It's only a matter of other peoples' opinion, after all.

Thanks PettyCandles, yep, strong-willed is certainly the right term! If he doesn't want to do something, it's pretty tough to talk him round.

Well, we had a little break yesterday. We went to the Science Museum for his birthday and keeping him in pants would have meant taking lots of changes of clothes and the risk of accidents on the train etc, so we put him in pull ups.

I did ask him if he wanted to go to the toilet but he decided that the toilets at the Science Museum are "funny" and didn't want to sit on them!

Anyway, he's back at nursery today and back in pants. He didn't have any accidents this morning but neither did he pee/poo on the potty. He did, however, sit on both the potty and toilet without much fuss for a "try". I did a pant check when we got to nursery and gave him lots of praise when I found they were dry.

I think I'll give it over the weekend and see how he's getting on then.
