Will not sit on potty or toilet - hysterical tantrums

Decided to start potty training DD (2y7m) after she showed an interest at nursery when her friends were on the potty.
1st few days were okay, a couple of wees and poo in potty and a few accidents. But over night she is having hysterics about sitting on the potty. Screams and will not go near it. She is desperate to go and holds on to the point when she is actually wriggling, touching herself and saying ow!
I've tried 3 different potties thinking that maybe it is uncomfortable but that hasn't helped. Sticker and sweet bribary for sitting on it just results in more tantrums.
Do I give up and try again in a month or so? Instinct tells me to persevere though. Thanks for any advise.

New development of the day...
Gave up. Put a nappy on her.
And now she's clutching herself and still wont wee.
Crying hysterically and hopping about so she really does need to go. She hasn't had a wee since she got up this morning - 8 hours and counting!
Argh!

my dd is 2yr 6mo and will sometimes go on the potty (if we remember and she is in the mood), and she asked me to get her a peppa pig toilet seat but wont go anywhere near the toilet and started screaming when she first saw it. hasnt asked to go back on the potty since the pp toilet seat was bought -£16!

so no advice really, just want to know what happened since.

Our dd (just over three) insists on doing her wees and poos in a nappy - she asks for a nappy on when she needs one.

She says she's scared of potties.

When we did decide not to let her have a nappy back on, she just held on and held on until we eventually put a nappy on.

I have no advice to give - I'm just hoping that age will sort it out. She spends all her time in pants, she just won't do the biz in anything other than a nappy.

How are your daughters doing now everyone?

Mine is joining the hysteria club. She arches her back and screeeeeeeches if I even vaguely mention a potty.

Have they overcome their fears in the last couple of weeks? [desperately hopeful emoticon]

The best option I found was in the summer when I had 2 weeks off I thought Id go cold turkey and do the potty trg thing. My son refused to use a potty so I purchased a new toilet seat which had a sea and fish effect i.e a pattern on it and he was fascinated by this and each time he needed to go was happy to give this a go.
