Periods still irregular nearly six months postpartum and feeling worried

I am 5 months nearly 6 months post partum. My periods have returned as I am not breast feeding. First cycle was 33 days, second 34, third 28 and now I am on day 35 and waiting for my 5th period.

I only had about 5 periods in between after having my second son and then falling pregnant with my third son. I have 3 kids. The age gap between my first and second is just over 2 years, and the age gap between my second and third is 15 months.

My periods after my first and second son were regular, no problems.

Please can anyone suggest why I’m struggling with my periods regulating properly this time??

Don’t panic, I’ve taken pregnancy tests and all are negative. Plus contraception is used.

Please help me out! I am worried. I have submitted a form to my GP as this cycle for the first time (never happened before) I had brown light bleeding from day 13 of the cycle for roughly a week.

Did you do any breastfeeding? even a few weeks can make the cycle irregular for ages

WhatNextImScared · 21/04/2026 18:34

Also how old are you?

I wouldn't worry, honestly. It's probably just your cycle still regulating. 6 months pp is still quite early.

See what the GP says though.

I just overthink things and because it’s not happened before it just concerns me.

Mine took about 2 years to go back to normal (but i did breastfeed for 6 months). My days were into mid-30s too for ages. Lighter cycles/heavier cycles. Everything was unusual. Go to the doctor if you're worried but you might just have to wait a bit longer

Went to GP. She has sent some swabs off and has booked me in for bloods to check iron, b12, full blood count, thyroid, kidneys, etc. she has also booked a blood test for pregnancy to rule it out completely as they have to do this. I’ve had multiple negative tests. All either clear blue or first response which is the pink dye tests. I’ve done digital too. All negative and when I’ve been pregnant in the past with my 3 other boys the tests have shown positive instantly and have been dark blue.. no faint lines or any of that. Plus I’ve tested on the day my period was late with the others and positive result showed straight away. I’ve taken tests this time from day 31 to present day which is day 37 and all negative. I know I’m not pregnant, I don’t feel it and protection is used.
I am losing weight and have been dieting since 1st of January. I’ve lost 2 stone and maybe this is why. I don’t know. We will soon find out from swabs and bloods I’m sure.

How are you feeling now OP? Just came across this thread as I'm 6 months PP and have felt really hormonal on and off for the last few weeks. I'll have good days where I feel more like myself, upbeat etc and then some days or moments where I feel negative, flat, things that didn't annoy me before suddenly do and just generally quite glum. I stopped breastfeeding/pumping about 6 weeks ago and LO only wakes up once in the night now, so I'm getting decent rest. Not sure if it's just life or hormones or a bit of both!

I feel much better after my period arriving! It was 5 days late. But I’m with you, this time I didn’t have the low mood. The previous two cycles I had really low mood, overthinking, not wanting to do anything. Maybe your hormones are all over the place even more so now that you have stopped breast feeding? I hope you are okay. Here if you need a chat! ☺️

Aww that's good news! I've had the exact same my last couple of cycles in the build up, then when my period arrived I felt much better too, but they've been a bit all over the place and still hasn't arrived yet. Feel like I'm stuck in the perpetual pre period mood at the moment. Yes I did wonder if stopping breastfeeding/pumping is contributing to it, even though I was only down to about 1 feed/pump a day towards the end. I'm tempted to go to the doctors as I was anaemic during pregnancy and then they told me I didn't need to take iron tablets anymore or even check my levels post birth! Sorry for the rambling message haha x
