Is my c section wound infected?

Hi, I’m looking for some opinions please as I had a c section 12 days ago and whilst most of it has healed nicely, one side has not and it feels like there’s a flap of skin not attached to anything. Is this normal? What would they do to fix it if not?
thank you

Is it red? Painful? Weeping? Hot?

either way I think you need to get it looked at by your GP or HV

fabmaz · 10/08/2025 20:33

@redvelvet7I would say yes. The open part looks red and looks like it has some leakage from it which is a sign of infection. Best to get to the doctor and get a swab and some antibiotics 😊

fabmaz · 10/08/2025 20:34

@redvelvet7oh and the open bit will heal shut once infection is all gone. It opens to allow the infection to release out and then fuses back together x

Bambamhoohoo · 10/08/2025 20:36

How long has it been like that? I’ve had 2 c section infections and they’ve taken hold quickly- the red has crept and I’ve started to feel poorly (tired, irritable and then the pain kicks in- I found within 2 days it was extremely painful, that was just before ABs kicked in)

If it’s been like that and not progressed into anything else I wouldn’t worry much yet. If it’s just appeared either let it develop or go down to walk in centre tonight for anti biotics.

Hmmm I had 2 ELCS and I dont like the look of that.

I'd get down to the GP at 8am tomorrow for a same day app

Justanothergeneric · 10/08/2025 20:40

I agree with the above. I've had a c section infection and it looked like that.

ShowOfHands · 10/08/2025 20:44

I'd get it looked at definitely.

My second emcs wound took some time to heal at one end. It was open and leaking clear, serous fluid but it wasn't infected. However, you need an HCP to confirm either way.

Ooh, that looks sore. I had a really bad infection in mine. The wound was sore and itchy, I was unable to walk upstairs due to pain, and came back down shuffling on my derrière. I was also feverish and had no appetite, I couldn’t pick my daughter up due to the discomfort. On the same day the health visitor had visited who didn’t act on my symptoms, I was admitted into hospital.

I was in isolation nil by mouth as they were contemplating an open wound procedure, thank gawd the intravenous antibiotics worked. PLEASE don’t suffer any longer and go to the Drs ASAP, ring tomorrow and tell them it’s urgent, I left it too long. Call it naive, to be honest I hadn’t got a clue what was happening.

Take care and update us with the outcome, 🌺

Sorry, the pictures weren’t there when I replied!

Thanks everyone. I went to the doctor today and it is infected, so have been prescribed some antibiotic cream

Hope you feel better soon, the antibiotics should work pretty quickly. If they don’t go back and ask for swabs to be taken for analysis, this can determine which antibiotics are best suited. I wish I’d realised sooner that something was wrong 🤦‍♀️. Look after yourself 🌺

fabmaz · 12/08/2025 21:54

@redvelvet7Hope that helps it clear up but keep an eye on it as I ended up having to take 2 oral antibiotics and the antibiotic cream for my infection to finally go properly

Sorry if images are TMI.
I have increased pain slightly so asked husband to take picture of scar so I could have a look.
one side looks completely different to the other is the one side looking infected and open? or is this normal healing?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
