Incisional hernia after c-section - any experiences?

Hi everyone - two weeks postpartum and my GP has just advised that the large, hard, painful lump at one side of my c-section incision is a hernia and I'll need an ultrasound to confirm, then surgery.

I'm gutted. As a family we've just had one thing after another to deal with and I thought we could just enjoy our baby for a few weeks . . . but now I have pain and discomfort and the prospect of recovering from another op.

I'd love it if anyone can answer the questions I was too discombobulated to ask the doc today!

  1. Am I likely to be given the op quickly or are there horrendous waiting lists for this type of thing?

  2. Will I have to stop breastfeeding? If so I'll be gutted - I've worked so hard to establish feeding

  3. From googling it seems to be a simple op - in and out in a day. Is this true of your experience?

Thank you. Now I'm off to shake my fist at the universe and have a little cry!

Hi sorry to read this and that you had to go through that. Sometimes life just gives you one thing after another eh!! I suspect I have this, will call docs on Monday. Just wondered how you got on? X

Hi @Ally638 - actually I had a happy ending in that the hernia resolved itself! Which is unusual as they normally require surgery, but after two weeks it had significantly improved so they just left it, and it gradually went away. Result!

They put me on strong antibiotics too - I'm not quite sure why, I was too fuzzy to ask questions at the time, but I wanted to mention it as they gave me thrush in my breast and poor DD ended up with thrush in her mouth. So watch out for that if you're breastfeeding and they give you antibiotics. Good luck!

thank you for replying! Ah that’s great to hear; very pleased that it ended up being not too awful an ordeal for you! Interesting on the antibiotics- and yes they have a tendency to give thrush don’t they which is a total pain when breastfeeding (as I am) so will watch out for that; thanks! X
