What would cause extremely sensitive nipples?

14 month post partum, still breast feeding, no period as of yet.
The past 3 days my nipples have become excruciatingly sore and tender. Also keep getting shooting pains in my breasts. It's toe curling every time my son breast feeds.
Is this a sign of period? Never used to happen.
I highly doubt I'm pregnant either as can't even remember the last time it happened.
Anyone else experienced this?

Sorry this sounds like thrush - prescription from GP and baby needs treatment too .

Ohhh I didn't even consider thrush.... there's no white patches in his mouth. My nipples aren't red or appear any different ?
I did have a course of anti biotics a couple of weeks ago so it could be thrush caused by those I suppose,

I thought thrush as soon as I read your post.

Just an update. It wasn't thrush, the soreness went away after a couple of days.
Today I've had my first period since before pregnancy so I'm thinking the sore boobs were ovulation as timing would be about right
