Which knickers after a c section?

I’m currently organising my hospital bag and figuring out what knickers l need. Meant to be having a c section with twins. A while back l remember someone mentioning to me about knickers with a sanitary towels built in to the front to protect the scar. Can’t remember if they can be bought like this or stuck one in themselves? Does anyone know what lm going on about?!

Not sure about the inbuilt towel bit but I had a planned C-section in October and used these from day 1 until about 2 weeks afterwards with a normal maternity pad in there. Can highly recommend, no leakages and didn't irritate the scar at all! Good luck with the section 😊

I think these would have to be stuck in yourself. Just make sure your knickers are big so the elastic sits above where the incision is going to be. I bought big granny pants and they were great, I didn't need to protect the incision site with a pad. Speak to your midwife before covering the incision. It might be better in terms of infection risk to leave it uncovered.

Hi @EL8888 i had a c section 12 weeks ago and i continued to wear my M&S size 18 knickers (pre pregnancy i was a size 10) with a sanitary pad and all was ok.

@PumpkinSly yep, l was thinking big knickers that go over the scar. But l see what you mean about the sanitary towel -l don’t want the wound getting sweaty and it will need to breathe. I don’t get the scented ones so that’s something to not worry about

Good luck with it. Are they your first babies? I've had two sections and they were fine to recover from, but I imagine it would have been harder if I had had twins!

My first trip out with my newborn DS in his pram was to buy some big pants that sat above my scar.

I've never looked back. Big pants rock 😂

I have maternity pants with a wide band that I wore after mine….and still do 😂

I had twins too! M and S high waisted cotton pants. So comfy. Sits above the incision.

Please use proper maternity pads at least in the early days so the mw can monitor your loss properly.

Buy TENA type incontinence pants, saves washing & leaking all over your clothes. Otherwise big M & S knickers, I used the high leg ones or Boy shorts two sizes bigger than my usual size.

When they say get big knickers get BIG knickers. Not just big full bum-covering briefs, I mean proper up to your navel massive and a bit loose too. I'd say no need for inbuilt pads unless you have complications. You'll have dressings on the c section cut at first and when they come off probably good for the air to get to it a bit.

Also for the love of god don't forget to have peppermint oil or wind relief tablets to hand. The trapped wind was the most uncomfortable thing for me in the first day or two post c-section. I asked my Mum to get wind relief tablets and she brought Rennies anti indigestion. Feckin useless for wind :( I think I cried.
Peppermint teabags won't cut it either. The only thing that gave me relief in the end was a few drops of proper peppermint essential oil in warm water.

Apart from all of that I loved my c-section. It was unplanned but straightforward, the team were ace and it all felt special.

I wore disposable with boots maternity pads

Would help if I'd have said which ones 🤦‍♀️Frida post-partum disposable C-section underwear. I got mine on Amazon but Boots sell them too. Don't worry about a pad for the wound, they'll have a dressing on it for at least a couple of days; from memory midwife took mine off on my day 1 home visit (3 days post birth).

These used to be good, but I don't know whether there are better ones these days. Disposable is great after a baby!

Massive M&S full briefs! I remember sending my mum out to get some as my normal short style ones were agony to wear. My scar was quiet uncomfortable and itchy for a while, I think I wore them for a bout a year afterwards!

Great big massive knickers. And once you start it is hard to ever go back.

I had Sainsbury’s giant pants one size up. They were enormously comfy and came high up over the scar and dressing. Also so cheap that I thought if they got ruined I could just chuck them. Actually had to get a second packet quite swiftly and kept wearing them for months

If normal knickers, m and s full brief j a size or 2 bigger sits above scar and holds a couple of pads at once

You need full briefs from M&S, at least two sizes up. I am still in mine a year post partum. They're too darn comfy.

In the early days I used to put a big sanitary towel across the scar to cushion. That helped a lot. I would stick it along the waist band of the pants and that seemed to line up ok with the scar more or less.
