Weight loss - is this normal?

I appreciate how this might come across to others who have struggled with losing weight postpartum, but I’m starting to worry and need some reference as to whether this is abnormal or not.

I gained 20kg during pregnancy, my baby is now 2 weeks old and I’ve already lost 15kg. My starting BMI when I conceived was 21 so I’m not wanting to lose anymore weight than where I started.

I’m waiting to get through to doctor but struggling with the strep A situation making the surgery super busy. I’ve been feeling very weak and breathless over past 2 weeks, which I put down to PPH. But now I’m having tummy troubles so that’s why I’ve started to question the rapid weight loss.

I am breastfeeding, but eating well as I stocked up freezer with meals before baby arrived. So three big meals a day, lots of snacks and water, multivitamins as well as my iron tablets. Even with my tummy troubles I’ve continued to eat normally. Am I worrying unnecessarily, has anyone else when breastfeeding lost weight this rapidly?

No for me. A huge amount of the initial weight loss is baby, placenta and water. I would monitor your weight over the next two weeks and if your still losing lots then see your GP.

I lost a lot quickly over the first 3 weeks post partum - also bfing and funny tummy which I think now was down to stress and hormones. I have now started putting a bit back on at 6 weeks pp. if you are eating and drinking properly I don’t see it would be cause for concern but keep an eye on it

@upfucked good plan, I’ll keep an eye on it to see if the rate of loss settles down a bit this week.

@frenchie4002 thanks that’s reassuring to know. I’m hoping Christmas will help me maintain something!

@smiles39 how are you doing now? Just wanted to say that I lost an incredible
amount of weight in the couple of weeks too, I think it is normal
to lose about 10kg straight away as all the excess liquid is coming out from you. Exclusive breastfeeding can contribute too, I’ve heard account of many losing weight.

myself I lost more than I wanted (was 65kg pre-pregnancy, 73kg before labour, 54kg now and not putting it back on) but I have a raft of other symptoms so currently investigating this with the gp. I would say if you are around your pre-pregnancy weight or slightly under and generally feel well you are most likely okay. Breastfeeding can take out a lot from you, I read that you need to consume about 2400-2800 calories per day (which is loads!)
