EBF and period

Hello mamas. My DS is 9 months old, period returned when he was 7 months. I am still EBF, day and night..
Anyway, I was due to come on my second cycle since my period has returned, but i'm now 4 days late. Has anyone with regular periods experienced this after birth? My periods have always been regular but I suppose this might be pretty standard as it's only just returned? Strangely I got cramps and some pain the day it was supposed to show, but nothing.

Also, has anyone experienced getting their period while BF for it to then stop again, is that a possibility or not? I could do some googling but prefer hearing individual experiences.

Absolutely not ready for a second baby, so just want to hear that this is normal my first period was exactly as how they used to be before, as in the usual 5 days...

I don't think this is what you want to hear, but yes the same happened to me - I was pregnant again despite ebf. DS1 was only 7 months.

Not sure about periods starting and stopping again, that wasn't the case for me.

You need to do a test really, the sooner you know the better Flowers

Thank you for your reply and sharing your story, even though it's made me feel weak at the knees to even think about 😂 xx

EBF doesn’t guarantee you won’t get pregnant unfortunately, that’s such a common misconception.

If you think there’s a chance you might be pregnant (ie you’ve had sex) you should do a test to be sure. But potentially it might just be your periods / hormones being a bit all over the place.

I was pregnant before my little one turned 1. And was ebf. My periods were back. I only had 1-2 before I was pregnant.

A friend of mine got pregnant before she had her first period, while ebf.

Have you been using contraception?

If so chances are you're not pregnant and you're just not regular yet.

If you haven't...well I'd be a bit worried

Thank you for your responses! I may have typed my post in a way I didn't intend to- I absolutely know that I can get pregnant while BF, my question was more of- is it Normal for periods to be irregular when returning. I didn't really say that did I! 🙈

My first cycle while breastfeeding was 40 days then a few more months of being pretty unpredictable before settling back to almost as regular as before.

Smogtopia · 07/07/2022 10:39

My cycles that returned whilst EBG were erratic and heavy! Took a long time to settle into a pattern

Yea it's normal.

Breastfeeding releases hormones that 'can' stop and delay ovulation so can cause irregular cycles.

RiceRiceBaby16 · 07/07/2022 10:43

Okay, so it does make sense for them to take a while to become regular due to BF hormones. We have been careful and my intuition says it's just late...it is only the second one after all, so might be more surprising if it was regular right away!

My son is 20 months. I've had 2 periods. Still BF. They clearly haven't returned properly. I think especially night feeds stop them returning properly

Lilgamesh2 · 07/07/2022 12:40

Mine were irregular upon returning too. However, I didn't get cramps on the days it was supposed to show. Sorry to be alarmist but I think you should get a test.

AnotherVice · 07/07/2022 13:01

EBF means exclusively breastfeeding. On demand. I imagine it's unlikely that at 9 months your baby is not having water/food/dummy/any time away from you and therefore the breastfeeding affords no contraceptive protection.

Yes you are right sorry- by EBF I meant no formula but of course food makes a difference. He is eating (not much tbh!). But still breastfeeding loads, 2/3 times at night too. And makes sense like someone said, periods irregular due to night feeding

Thank you for sharing, so it is normal / common it seems for them to not be regular, especially as I am doing night feeds too still
