Heavy periods postpartum

Hi. Just wondering whether any mummys out there have had heavier periods after childbirth. I had my first baby 4 years ago, labour was easy, 5 hours from start to finish (lucky I know) and recovered well. Went back on the pill and periods went back to normal. However I have given birth to my 2nd baby 6 months ago and periods are now quite heavy despite starting the pill again. Not sure if it’s related to birth at all, as I had a totally different birth this time round as I had to be induced and had a forceps delivery. Do you think it’s too early to get this investigated as it’s only been 6 months or should I get it checked? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Smear is up to date. No abnormalities found.

Yep - a lot heavier. On my heaviest days I now use the heaviest tampon and I still leak two hours later if I don’t change it.

was never this heavy before. Have 3 year old

Oh yes. Very normal as I've heard similar from family members who warned me it would happen. After babies it comes on crazily fast and heavy when I start. Plus side I've found they are shorter now too so I guess that's something!

Every month is a bloodbath for me now. I have no idea why. At least anecdotally, though, I know this has happened to a number of my friends. Very frustrating!

Yup, similar birth to yours with forceps. My periods before having baby where pretty straight forward, around 5 days of bleeding, not too heavy, no cramps etc.
Had my baby a year ago and since my periods came back they’ve been very heavy, bad cramps and bloating beforehand. I’m still too scared to use tampons, I tried a few months after birth and the discomfort was horrible, but going through pads like crazy every cycle!

With my second my periods have been a lot heavier I'm 7 month pp now and they are easing off the last month so I'll see if they return to how they were before but I'm thinking they may stay heavier than what I was used to , plus points though no more cramps and my mood swings has lessoned by about 80 percent. I'd give it a few more month see how they are but they may stay heavier I think with the second pregnancy the womb stretches even bigger and there's more to shed hence the heaviness.

Same here - had to get tranexamic acid prescribed as I couldn’t safely leave the house for the first couple of days. Periods are better now but still a lot heavier than they used to be pre-pregnancy.

apparently it’s because your uterus shrinks back but the “surface area” is bigger - my GP described it to me as like folding a bedsheet back into its original packaging! It will fit but it’s all crumpled and not as neat as it used to be.

Oh thank you ladies. So sorry to hear you are all experiencing the same thing. It’s awful. I feel so tired too but think that is down to a sleepless night with a 6 month old and 4 year old lol. The things we’ve to go through, however they are so worth it! I will speak to my doctor if no improvement in a couple of months.

8 months pp and it’s like a massacre down there sometimes! They have eased off in the past two months but I had them from 2months pp as I had very little milk supply so stopped pumping after around then.

does it get any better?
