Bright Red Bleeding After C Section

Hi everyone,

I gave birth via C section 5 weeks ago. I had the kind of bleeding that I would expect up until about 4 weeks... it started off heavier and was bright red before lessening and turning brown. In fact, I went a week where I didn’t need to use a pad as it was so light that I just wiped it away when I went to the toilet.

However, for the last few days, the bleeding has increased and gone back to being bright red. It doesn’t soak a pad or anything like that but it’s definitely ramped up again. My wound seems to be healing well from what I can tell... just a little sore at times. I intend to make a doctors appt on Monday but was wondering in the meantime if anyone else has had this experience too? Could it be that I’m just doing too much? I’ve basically been living how I was before giving birth...

Thanks!

Hi OP, congrats on your little one. Are you breast feeding or bottle feeding? I bottle fed both my DC from birth, DC1 was forceps delivery and DC2 C section and both times my period returned after 5 weeks. Could it be the start of your period?

Otherwise I have read that lochia can stop and start again, I would keep an eye on it and if it’s starts getting really heavy like filling a pad in an hour, get in touch with GP or I think you can still contact the hospital where you have birth up till ) weeks?

Sorry that should say till 6 weeks*

I had this. The gp suggested it was maybe because I was feeling better and physically doing more so to perhaps rest a bit. It did abate but obviously watch out for soaking through pads or massive clots or a temperature/ flu symptoms which could suggest an internal infection (since the wound looks fine).

Hi! Did you figure out what this was? I have the same... thanks

It was nothing really… it just passed. I did end up bleeding for over 12 weeks though so it took a long time to stop. But it was very light by the end. As a PP said, I think it was likely from doing too much too soon and not letting myself recover fully.

I did have an infection in my uterus from the surgery but that was painful and according to my GP, not linked to the bleeding. This was also probably due to doing too much too soon.

I would say it’s probably nothing to worry about (at least it wasn’t in my case) but of course, not a doctor myself!

Take care and most importantly, take it easy! x
