Difficulty gaining weight for new born

My newborn son is 14 days and is not gaining weight fast enough. He was born 3235kg and is now just 3380 kg.

We do combination feeding. His problem is reflux and we have tried baby gaviscon, but gives him constipation. Does any one have any suggestions?

That weight is perfectly acceptable. They should be back at BW by day 14 and your baby is above that so there's no problem.

All babies gain weight at different rates.
As long as they are back at their birth weight within 2 weeks of delivery its good.

As for the reflux, you have my full sympathy.
DD has silent reflux and its a nightmare.
Things we have done to get to a good point....

  • prescriptuon formula in case of cows milk protein allergy as this is a big cause of reflux in babies. GP tried this first.
We combination feed and I havent cut out dairy from my diet but it is recommended in case there is an allergy. We have tried to recently switch bact to normal formula but she vomited/reflux got worse.
  • infant Gaviscon. It causes constipation so offer some cooled boiled water between feeds. Just an ounce or so to loosen the poo. We have managed to get down to half a sachet in each feed and poos are generally ok.
  • feed upright and wind after every ounce taken.
  • keep upright for 30mins after feeding
  • see a paediatrician. Our GP refused to prescribe anything else as alot of medication is off licence for babies. Paediatrician prescribed Omeprazole 10mg tablets. Dissolve a tablet in cooled water and syringe into babies mouth 30mins before the morning feed.
DD was like a different baby after one dose. Although I do appreciate it doesnt work for every baby and in some cases, can take a week or more to have any affect.

One other thing to have checked is a tongue tie.
DD srruggled to gain weight and had lots of ussues feeding in the first few weeks. She had a severe posterior tie that was missed by everyone. We had a private midwife snip it and she started feeding better and gained 300g in a week.

Reflux is a b**rd though. I feel for you and your baby. I hope it improves soon.
