Retained Placenta after C-Section

Am I right in thinking that you are less likely to have any retained placenta after a csection?

I am 17 days PP & bleeding is very stop/start, I have already had one course of antibiotics for possible infection after a heavy bleed at 7 days PP and my bleeding now can sometimes feel quite heavy.

During my csection it was written on my notes 'ragged membranes' so I am now concerned that I could have retained placenta but not sure if this is less likely as I had a Cesarean?

I have a constant period type ache too

I had retained placenta from vaginal birth. Mine was found because I had purple weird 'clots' coming out with my blood that were actually membrane. Always worth just checking with your midwife.

Yes this happened to me after my c section. It took 3 courses of antibiotics for ‘post birth infections’ and 11 weeks until someone took me seriously and gave me a scan. Dr refused to believe me as they said due to it being a C sec the surgeon would have removed it all, but clearly that wasn’t the case.

Please insist on a scan if you still feel unwell after antibiotics, if it is retained placenta it’s only a small day op to remove it.

It is much less likely but not impossible. I would go back, mention your notes and explain your worries. It’s relatively easily diagnosed/seen on a scan.

Its not impossible with a c-sec.
I had a chunk of retained placenta from my vaginal delivery last year.
I haemorrhaged following birth which everyone thought was due to my episiotomy. I continued bleeding constantly for the next 9 weeks. During that time I was back in maternity triage twice, once with severe abdominal pains, diagnosed as a urine infection and the second time I haemorrhaged badly at home.
I waited weeks for a scan which did reveal retained placenta tissue.
The hospital did nothing.
Told me it would come out with my period, which didnt happen as i was breastfeeding.
My GP sent me for a follow up scan and luckily I passed it naturally with another heavy bleed and pain.

17 days post birth is still early and not unreasonable for bleeding but, go with your gut feeling and asked to be checked.
Dont leave it as it can become an emergency.
Better be safe than sorry.
