Breastfeeding thrush advice

Hi,

I had shooting breast pain and sore nipples - GP has given me cream and baby a gel for thrush.

Have been doing cream/gel for a week now but GP didn’t say how long to carry on for. I’ve heard thrush is notorious for coming back so want to nail it first time round.

So far along with meds I have:

  • been washing bras and towels on 90
  • heat sterilising my Elvie pump (although only boiling for 5 minutes as I’ve heard they can warp if boiled for longer??)
  • have used a thrush pessary in case it can be passed from breasts?
  • thrown away frozen breast milk from when I think I had thrush

How did you treat thrush, and how long did you use the cream/gel for? Should I also ask for oral meds? Do you think boiling the Elvie parts for 5 mins will work?

Thanks in advance! X

So sorry you're suffering. I can't answer your questions though, you might be better asking a BFC on one of the BFing Helplines.

This info on thrush from Kellymom might help though.

Hope it clears up soon @Frenchie99 Thanks

I've been there twice and it's awful. So sorry to hear you're suffering! It sounds like you're doing everything right.

The advice on Kelly mom is great too (& it mentions frozen milk which is interesting). I'd definitely call the GP again to check re timings, but for me the cream alone didn't work. I had to go on fluconazole to get rid of it... it probably took 2 weeks the first time and 3 weeks the second. But once you're on the meds, the pain stops within about 2 days! Sending you lots of positive vibes.
