What would you do?

Right now is a terrible time to require medical care! What would you do in my situation?

I had a c section 3 weeks ago. Reported UTI symptoms pretty much straight away. My GP gave me antibiotics after a week of being in pain & sent off a urine test, and said I should be feeling better within 48 hours. When I didn't I rang up & was told (by a different doctor in the practice) to wait until end of course.

Finished 7-day course of antibiotics, still felt rubbish, but figured they'd phone me once the test came back. Finally phoned again earlier this week: I'm in a lot of pain! Was told that the test came back with significant bacterial infection & that I needed different antibiotics.

I'm now on day 4 of that new 5-day course, and still feel as though the UTI hasn't lifted at all and is getting worse.

But: GP now has big 'do not enter' signs at the door with instructions to only phone. But the phone line cuts off after a couple of rings - have been trying for 24 hours & cant get through. Also can't get through to 111 (not surprisingly).

Where do I go? Don't think I should take myself & babe to germ-infested & overloaded A&E, but can't think of many other options. Really dont want this infection to spread or turn into sepsis. What would you do?

Poor you that sounds crap.

At my GP the 'don't enter' sign is just due people with a cough- is it definitely everyone at yours?

Is there an out of hours GO number you can call at the weekend?

Thanks Pauline - yes, my GP is definitely not seeing anyone & only operating a phone triage (except their phone is overloaded and/or broken). It's a shitty situation! I think I'll try to get through the weekend and will then try to get to the GP...

I’d phone the ward that discharged you, no doubt at all. Phone them now and they can advise. Take care OP

I'm with Didyeaye, phone the maternity hospital and explain the situation.

Yes go back to the maternity ward and explain. It's possible the infection has spread to your kidneys which can be very dangerous if not treated promptly. Do you have a fever? I had a uti that became a kidney infection and I was really quite ill! Good luck I am sure they will help you x

I managed to get through to the GP late on Friday, after trying all day. They said I should just take another 2 days of antibiotics, and then call again if necessary (which is today). UTI symptoms are definitely still there unfortunately & I am trying to get through to GP again today. It's just not very reassuring to be fobbed off via phone.

Don't really know why I'm so reluctant to go back to the hospital. One reason is that it's at the other side of London (definitely not v local to me). They've always been great in person but rubbish on the phone (where the standard line is 'go to your GP or to A&E of serious), & I don't want to go there and be turned away or told to come back another day. But I think unless the GP is more useful today I will go to the maternity ward - you are completely right to suggest it.
