Blood pressure issue following pre eclampsia - need advice?

Hi all,

Hope this is the right section. I’m 8 weeks PP and was diagnosed with severe pre eclampsia at 38 weeks (it happened very suddenly and aside from sickness, I was low risk and healthy) I’m a healthy, fit women and if anything had the occasional issue of low blood pressure never high. However it does run in my family. I’m also not allowed to exercise (as in the gym) for 12 weeks which is a killer.

I was on a mix of medication (due to be reviewed next week) but I’ve weened off (as per drs advice) however today I’ve went “funny” again. I say funny as I can’t explain how I feel it’s like a really fuzzy head, like I’m not properly with it. It’s weird. Checked my BP as it was high (167/97), it’s been normal the past few hours but I still feel weird.

I’m just wondering if you’ve had pre eclampsia, how long did it take for you to get back to normal? I’m shocked I’ve had a funny turn as I’ve been okay aside from seeing flashing lights the other day (but no other symptom) also I was out luckily at my mums but I couldn’t drive home so my dad and partner had to take me home - I’m scared this might happen if I’m out with my LG just shopping etc?

I also have a debrief meeting scheduled in a few weeks with the hospital as I had quite a traumatic birth. TIA

It took me a good few months for it to return to normal. I had episodes like you, and just knew it was high, scary at the time. I actually got a 24 hour trace at one point that took a reading every ten mins. I think I took a low dose for about 6 months. Things got better when my periods came back.

Thank you, that’s exactly it you just know it’s high - it’s so odd. I’m glad things improved for you, I was starting to think it could last forever. My periods have started (only just) as I was unable to BF.

Can you remember which meds you were on at the time?

I took labetalol after developing pre-eclampsia.
I was weaned off by the gp postpartum and was med free and back to normal after 6 months in total.

I was on labetalol and nifedipine, slowly reduced the nifedipine first and then the labetalol. My blood pressure was higher after the birth at times, especially about day 10 when there is a hormonal surge, I was in and out of hospital for the first month.
