Depo after birth

Hi I’ve just had my six week check up and had the depo injection and I’m now regretting it. At the time I was just thinking of not getting pregnant again but now I’m worried about putting more hormones in my body after I’m just feeling they’re settling down.

I know I can’t do anything about it now but has anyone had any adverse affect on themselves or breast fed baby?

Many thanks

Congratulations on your baby! Not quite what you are asking but I had the depo fairly long term before TTC and never had any issues with it at all. I’m expecting second at the moment and was considering it for post birth but was looking for as much info as possible with it and breastfeeding.

Did you get any guidance on having it while breastfeeding at the check. I would seriously hope that if it could derail feeding then they would have made sure your were aware. I know not all hormonal bc is given to nursing mums so hopefully you will be totally fine.

The breastfeeding network is great for info on any drug while feeding and they say it is used after 6 weeks but should be avoided earlier in case it affects prolactin.

Thanks for your replies. I was just after anyone's experiences with having the depo after giving birth and if there were any adverse affects on their new born

I had the injection around 5 weeks after having my little girl and it had no effect on her whatsoever, I was reassured by nurse and doctor that there’d be no problem having it whilst breastfeeding.

I do however wish I had never had it because it’s had awful affect on my moods. It’s been a tough couple of months! Can I ask how you’re finding it, having had it around the same time?

Hi I've found that the weight I was loosing breastfeeding has gone back on and then some and I'm craving sugary foods which is unusual for me. Definitely not going to have it again can't wait for the next nine weeks to pass
