How long should I let my periods settle for?

My baby is 14m, still breastfeeding, & I've had 4 regular periods so far. Pre-pregnancy they weren't light, but not particularly heavy & the pain was an occasional dull ache - an irritation but nothing particularly dreadful.

Since coming back in October my periods have been v heavy for the first 36 hours before suddenly trailing off to barely anything but still going on for a total of 7 days. The first 36hrs are like labour pain-wise, possibly worse. It's like a stabbing pain occasionally, I feel like I need to wee quite frequently even when there's very little to come out & I have to do labour-style breathing to get through doing a poo, or even gas. I also feel quite dizzy on those days too.

I don't want to waste the GP's time if this is just my body settling down again, but it didn't happen with either of my other DC so I'm slightly freaking out that I'm broken now! Could this just be a breastfeeding thing or something that's going to resolve itself without me having to remove my head from the sand I've stuck it in?!
