Postnatal Check Experiences

Hi all

I had my postnatal check today and I'm wonder what yours was like as I didn't know what to expect.

I had a good old chat about random life experiences, blood pressure and weight taken, asked about blood loss, scar healing and contraception then I was sent on my way. Is this normal?

Yeah I would say this is completely normal general chat to see how your coping physically and mentally. I've always had my tummy pressed and poked aswell to check all as should be.

Count yourself lucky. At mine, they checked over baby. I said I thought I had a prolapse and could she look? "I don't think we have time for that."

No contraception chat (luckily sort that myself), didn't even ask if I was bfing.

@Mumof4under10 okay sounds normal then, didn't get my tummy pressed probably should of asked.

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff Oh that's no good! I've lost count with how many times I've been asked about contraception!

Just seen you said scars healing so did you have csection? Maybe different then. Never had one of them so may be a little different .

My postnatal check up was rubbish. We did all the usual chat but I told her I was really sore down below still, and could she check I was okay which she said was normal and didn’t look.

So I went to the doctors the next day as I’m seriously still sore down below and it’s turns out my stitches had opened up and brewed a nice infection where I had torn. Really disappointed In my midwife as then had to go on antibiotics for a few weeks and get a follow up appointment too.

c24680 · 10/08/2018 21:12

@Mumof4under10 I did have an emergency csection. I was expecting more of a chat regarding my health and well-being not general life experience chat like talking to a friend. I feel great etc just wondered what everyone else experienced.

@NotDrunk That doesn't sound pleasant at all! Did your health visitor not ask about your stitches weekly? I really can't fault my midwife or health visitor at all, they've been great throughout!

My six week check was crap. Doctor wasn’t interested at all. Bear in mind I have a history of pnd with Dc1 - he didn’t ask a single thing about how I felt or how I was coping. He only asked if my section scar was healing up as I had a bit of trouble with that.

NickyNora · 12/08/2018 23:14

There aren't any 6 week checks in this PCT. Haven't been for over 10 years.

katmarie · 12/08/2018 23:23

My six week check was pretty poor. She very briefly checked over my ds who was having a screaming meltdown at the time, (she didn't touch him at all) and when I looked at his book later she'd ticked off things she hadn't even checked him for. She didn't ask me anything, and when I said I was going to breastfeed ds in the waiting room after the appointment to calm him down, she reacted really negatively. It turns out I have post natal depression and thyroid issues, both of which I was experiencing symptoms of and could maybe have been picked up earlier had she spoken to me a bit more, but I was very much made to feel like I was taking up time. Thankfully she's not my regular go, who is in fact excellent.

FranticallyPeaceful · 13/08/2018 11:29

We have 8 week check here, he checked my baby but not me although I spent most of it breastfeeding him because he wasn’t happy af being poked. Briefly asked about contraception and said “well you look like you’re doing fine” (a statement, not a question). I said I was tired but he said it’s normal especially since I had sepsis and then sent me on my way.
Never went to check with my eldest or my middle child, only went to this one because I had sepsis after this birth and nearly died so they said I should go but it was useless anyway.

c24680 · 13/08/2018 20:48

Oh jeeze, mine doesn't sound bad compared to everyone else's! My DD check is in two weeks with a doctor which is suppose to be the same type of check they get when their born, my health visitor did her 6 week check and a nurse at my doctors surgery did mine.

Sounds normal but you had much more of a chat than I did.

holycityzoo · 13/08/2018 20:58

Hello how are you?
Good thanks
How's baby?
Good thanks
Feeding ok?
Yes really well thanks
Are you getting any sleep
A bit but not loads
How's things down there?
Good thanks
Do you feel down?
No I'm fine
Have you thought about contraception?
Yes I've got an appointment to have a coil fitted
Ok that's great you know where we are if you need anything.

Think it took 3 mins. But in fairness I was fine so I'd rather they spent time with people who weren't.
