When did your period return post childbirth?

Hi Ladies,

My LO is now 10months old and my periods havent returned. I exclusively breastfed until about 6 weeks ago when she self weaned. I'm just trying to gauge how long other people had to wait. I'm keen to get back on the pill, but would like my own cycle established first.

You do know that you are fertile before your period don't you???

It varies hugely, I had my periods return after 6 weeks even when exclusively breastfeeding Sad

After 2 and a half years! DS is 3 in November and I've just found out I'm pregnant - I haven't been using any contraception since I started trying for DS over 4 years ago...!

babyiwantabump · 25/09/2015 15:30

18 months ish still breastfeeding though - I only had one before getting pregnant again too!

girlandboy · 25/09/2015 15:31

4 months with the first, and 3 months with the second. Even though I exclusively breast fed them. I remember feeling rather disappointed!

BumWad · 25/09/2015 15:33

First DS (stillborn at 25 weeks) exactly 32 days after giving birth.

Second DS who was exclusively breastfed until 13 weeks, got a period at 11 weeks and again at 15 weeks, looks like the missing period due to breastfeeding doesn't stand for me!

lanbro · 25/09/2015 15:34

Mine didn't return before I got pregnant with dd2 when dd1 was 9mo. Planned but wasn't expecting to conceive so quickly so beware!

Muskey · 25/09/2015 15:41

Mine returned after a year but I suffer with PCOs which might have affected it

PannaDoll · 25/09/2015 15:43

Mine came back at around 14 months after I dropped a middle of the night feed.

Swannykazoo · 25/09/2015 15:43

Still no sign at 21 months! BFing quite a lot though....

EsmetheWitch · 25/09/2015 15:46

Same as Lanbro, mine didn't return after DD1 and I discovered I was pregnant when she was 12 months Blush

LikeSilver · 25/09/2015 16:01

Mixed fed DD - 4 months I think?
EBF DS - 7 months (he likes solids!)

Cadburyhome · 25/09/2015 16:58

Yep i know i can conceive before it returns. Do you think its a bad idea to start taking the pill before i have a period?

19mo for me although was still breastfeeding. Self weaning under a year is unusual, I wouldn't be surprised if that triggered your cycles to return soon. Not sure on the pill issue but I'm sure a family planning clinic could advise.

Etak15 · 08/11/2015 23:04

All dcs breastfed
Dd1 was 9 months when they returned, dd2 18 months (she was a terrible eater!)
Dd3 18 months ish (another constant feeder!)
Ds 8 months (a good eater - and far too interested in everything else going on to want to breastfeed unless he's tired!)
He's 11 months now I've just started on pill last week - contemplated using natural family planning but after a couple of scary times of period being late have headed for the drugs!!

MrsJacksonAvery · 08/11/2015 23:07

Breastfeeding and period came back when DD was 6mths after I did controlled crying and DD went a night without feeding.

Purpleboa · 12/11/2015 23:37

I'm ebf and 5 months pp. At my 6 week check my gp prescribed me the mini pill, which is apparently safe to use if you're breastfeeding. No period as yet.

MadFestiveGnome · 15/11/2015 10:52

6 weeks, despite ebfing.

DefiniteMaybe · 15/11/2015 10:55

18 months with dd1 but she fed every 2 hours day and night.
Dd2 was 1 last week and only feeds twice a day and they've still not returned.

CorBlimeyTrousers · 15/11/2015 11:04

Talk to your GP but I don't see why you can't start the pill when you haven't had a period yet. It's my understanding that the reason you usually start on day 1 of your period is so you know you're not pregnant and you can only be sure it's working after a week.

My baby is 12 weeks old, I exclusively breast fed for 4 weeks, then mix fed until he was 8 weeks, and formula since then and I haven't had a period yet.

Skiptonlass · 16/11/2015 13:39

There's no medical reason to wait until your period returns so if you want to take the pill go ahead :)
