Lochia- what's normal?

LO is 11 days old. I've been bleeding as expected since birth, but last few days the discharge has had a brownish tinge and smelt a bit funny. Not horrendous or overpowering, just a bit odd. Then today I've gone back to bleeding again. Do I need to see a doctor, or is this normal? I've forgotten everything from last time! Thanks

I think that sounds about normal! Mine went a brownish colour (it didn't go back to red after) but I think the wound site is quite large so I inagine it doesn't exactly heal at an even rate!

Obviously if you have any concerns then contact your health visitor/ midwife/ Dr!

If the smell is like your end-of-period blood then it's normal. If the smell is like infection or you're at all worried then get checked out.

Sounds quite normal to me. The on-off / red-brown carried on for about 6-8 weeks with both my DC.

Ok that's reassuring thanks the hv is coming tomorrow so I'll mention it to her and see what she says. Won't rush to a and e just yet

Sounds similar to mine it went on like that for about 3 weeks.

This sounds similar to mine. It went from heavy to light then to brownish with a faint smell and now back to bleeding again. My ds is 1 wk old and I was worrying about what is normal and paranoid about having infections I've been googling this all night!! Thanks for reassurance, as far as I can tell as long as smell not overpowering flow doesn't get really heavy/large clots then it's fine and can go on for weeks bfing or not!

I went to my GP when mine did this, she said it was the start of an infection. Because it was a few days before Christmas I was given antibiotics, just in case.

If I were you give it a few days and see which way it progresses.

Hmm. DS is now 4+5, bleeding stopped completely on Monday (3+6) but has now started again. Normal? I feel fine but I don't tend to be ill until I'm really really ill, if that makes sense? (sorry to hijack!)
