Abdn liked the title so I just went ahead!

I blame Abdn. She's the devil's advocate you know...

I will look forward to hearing all about your Christianity/Marxism book Neenz. Lots of believers in the Labour Party you know! Hmm, what does that say about socialism and the labour party then... Ah see, that Abdn, she's got me being the devil's advocate now!!!

Do you think Eddie will find us again - she's been gone ages!

But Tories can't be Christians either cos surely worshipping Cameron/Thatcher/Capitalism is against the commandment "you shall have no other Gods before me".

PenguinNZ · 08/07/2010 03:13

Oh and I meant to say last night, so glad to see you back Poppy. You have been in my thoughts a lot and I am really happy that you have an understanding doctor. Oz trip - waheyyy!

BTW, due to current circumstances, the Penguin family is unlikely to make it back to the UK this year. I'm gutted actually, but it was going to cost about £5,000 at least, which is just too much ATM. Going to have an Oz holiday instead though, so maybe see you there Poppy?

neenz · 08/07/2010 09:26

lol at worshipping Thatcher, Penguin . I have always thought Republicanism and Christianity don't go well togteher even though they are closely tied in the States, cos there seems to be such narrow-minded views (gay people/abortion etc). It's not what Jesus taught. Christians in the US campaigned AGAINST healthcare reforms (cos they would kill babies ) when you'd have thought Christians would be the first to say of course we need universal healthcare.

abdnhiker · 08/07/2010 13:31

Politics and religion never seem to go well together - but definitely not in the American South where it's a bit of a muddle. But then there's claiming to be religious and actually acting that way and they are very different things.

Penguin flights can be so expensive - sorry you can't make it back to visit

Tried toilet training here today as Fraser's happy to poo on the potty but it was a complete disaster - he can't relax and pee on the potty at all so just dribbles and then five minutes later sprays all over the floor... I've started a thread here.

PiggyPenguin · 08/07/2010 16:31

marking place. I am reading honestly, and will try to post later when kids in bed,

SpiderWilliam · 08/07/2010 17:22

I have a nomination for the Annoying MIL Moment of the Day Award.

They arrived an hour ago for the weekend. Not even made it into the lounge when she looks at P says "you've lost weight" and pats his tummy, then looks at me and says: "But Mummy certainly isn't fading away".

Then within the hour asked me whether the Midwives are concerned about how big I am. I reply: "No, I measured spot on for dates last time they checked and last week one told me that I have a neat bump, and another thought I was at the hospital for a 1st trimester blood test." MIL says: "But you look so large. You can't even tell at 4 months that some people are pregnant"

I reply that actually I am 5 months, and I pointed out to her that what she had said was a bit rude. At which point her hands shot to her face in horror.

SpiderWilliam · 08/07/2010 17:26

Split post cos the iPhone is being odd.

But in the context of what she has previously said which I interpret as the emcs my fault cos I'm greedy, I am quite annoyed.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 08/07/2010 19:33

How awful Spider, good for you standing up to her! One of my biggest pet hates about pregnancy was that people treat your body as public property.

OP posts:
going · 08/07/2010 19:46

Well done for standing up for yourself. What an insensitive thing for her to say!

pleasechange · 08/07/2010 21:07

spider how rude indeed! I would never dream of telling someone how "large" they were, pg or otherwise. Why do people think it's ok to do this! fwiw, people at work still remind me of how massive I was with A - I know, I have the wrinkly tummy to prove it, despite finally losing all the weight!

Worked late this eve and so barely saw A at all today . At least it doesn't happen very often, and I do have all day tomorrow with him

Anyone doing anything interesting over the weekend?

PenguinNZ · 08/07/2010 22:13

Politics and religion - pah! Both have too many examples of "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" IMO. George Bush actually said he doesn't consider atheists to be patriotic Americans! Eh? Great fun to play devils advocate though.

Well done Spider! Your MIL does sound bloody rude incredibly insensitive. I think she probably does know she's being rude though and was embarassed that you blatantly told her so when she's got away with it before.

Abdn - I mentioned to MW that I was planning to wait until summer to toilet train R and she said oh no, if he's cold and wet he'll learn much quicker. Which is a good point I hadn't considered, but at the mo it really is just too cold, the tips of my fingers are a bit numb as I type this, I wear thermals most days (the glamour!)....anyway will be interested to see how you get on and what tips you can give us all!

Allnew - I only saw R for an hour on Weds, so strange, I so didn't want him to go to bed that night. Have fun with A today.

Off the library/farmers market/mini golf/adventure playground today, v excited. I love mini golf. On Sunday afternoon DH and I have a date! MIL babysitting so we can go to the cinema, poncey french film too. Anyone seen or read the Elegance of the Hedgehog?

Upsidedowncake · 08/07/2010 22:31

Hello everyone

lurking as usual and just marking my place

manic - houseguests every night since 4 June. And debs, you're the one who runs a B and B!

Glad all the pregnancies are going well.

x

SpiderWilliam · 08/07/2010 23:02

Thanks folks: you can always be relied on to help me feel that IANBU!

She's not mentioned it again, so maybe I got my point across.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 08/07/2010 23:10

No help here on potty training, but always interested to hear other stories.

Interestingly my rude tactless thoughtless friend turned up at S's party announcing that her DD was now in pants. I'm probably being very judgy , but given that she had 3 accidents within an hour of arriving before going into pull ups (and then never asked to go all day) I kind of get the impression that she's not really ready? She's not two yet, and it seemed like a case of mum thought it was time to start potty training rather than child showing signs.

She also came out with loads of other unintentionally rude things again, but this time my other (real) friend was there, so I'm going to catch up with her and find out if I'm being paranoid or not.

Neenz - I got your message btw. Will give it some considered thought, but for now am a bit knackered and busy shouting at the telly while QT is on

going · 08/07/2010 23:10

Penguin My girls were really easy to potty train and were both dry around second birthday. DS screeches if he even sees the potty and throws it into another room and shuts the door - may take a while

abdnhiker · 09/07/2010 07:40

spider your MIL was horrid to you!

I will have no toilet training tips as Fraser's obviously not got bladder control yet - he wanted to but just can't pee on demand. Currently he's screaming on the floor because I've put a nappy on him and he wants to wear his pants but didn't want to sit on the toilet or potty... Not sure what I'm going to do..

DebInAustria · 09/07/2010 08:21

Hi Udcake, sympathies on the house guests, at least our guests have their own apartment!

Spider, hope the weekend gets better with mil, maybe she realises how rude she was.

no potty training tips as I never tried the boys until at least 2.5. Ethan's had no more interest in the potty here, but did anounce at the pool yesterday that he was going to wee and then did it (not in the pool, on the grass)

Penguin - I have an image in my head that this "library/farmers market/mini golf/adventure playground" is all one place, swinging on the monkey bars, golf club in one hand, books under your arm and basket of farm goodies on your head!!

Hi to everyone else, quickly writing this whilst Mr Tumble babysits!!Last day of term today, they finish at 9.45 am, and then the holiday begins.Hope the weather stays like this

PiggyPenguin · 09/07/2010 09:54

Wish my summer holiday had already started deb

Spider your mil was bloody rude, and now you have started you should pull her up on it every time she says something. Embarrass her enough and she will stop.

I got up at 4.30 this morning to get J a drink. I got to the lounge and found ds1 sitting on the sofa watching tv! I told him off and sent him to bed but this morning he could hardly keep his eyes open. When I asked him what time he got up he said about 11.00! I'll be amazed if he makes a whole day at school without falling asleep. I was really cross and he is now banned from the wii for a month.

DebInAustria · 09/07/2010 12:08

Sybil - can't believe your ds!!

DebInAustria · 09/07/2010 12:10

dh wants to know what he was watching at that time.

going · 09/07/2010 13:10

Sybil* that made me chuckle! How old is your ds1?

pleasechange · 09/07/2010 14:42

thanks penguin - and enjoy your date at the weekend! DH and I have been on just one since DS was born, and it was really nice!

on potty training - I bought one this week, as A likes to tell me when he's going to have a poo. He told me this morning he needed one and I asked if he wanted to sit on the potty. Got a very definite "No...."!

Isn't it funny that kids want to stay up as late as poss but when we get older it's a treat to actually go to bed early! (or is that just me?)

PiggyPenguin · 09/07/2010 17:54

DS1 is 9, he was watching cartoons on sky. He was definitely up for all that time as he was telling me all about the 'amazing adrenalini brothers'. I checked the tv guide and they were on at 11.15.

I think he must have slept for some of it as he managed to not fall asleep at school, but he is off camping with friends tonight so probably won't get much sleep then either!

poppy34 · 09/07/2010 20:59

Marking spot- hi all.

Spider good for you- your mil sounds class.

Penguin I LOVED that book and have it sequel so will read it quick and send it on ( know I owe you a book) so enjoy your date.

Am doing ok but bit tired- waiting for natural m/c but seems to be slowing down so I fewr may have an op( got scan in 2 weeks but hoping will have m/ c by then).

Is there anything vital I have missed this week (thanks for bed advice those that gave it).
