X-posted massively!
Sleeping - I kept thinking 'lucky Iestyn was a good sleeper' but that just goes to show...my Mum was talking about graduation last year because she came to stay over because I'd had a week of broken nights (and not just the once, because once a night was normal!), and I know he wasn't sleeping through when he was 1. I was still feeding him at night but can't remember when I stopped; but he was the same size as M.
So, er, I'm not being helpful at all. But I'm sympathetic.
I couldn't co-sleep with Iestyn either; at the beginning he was so scarily small, and then when I wanted to - around 9 months maybe? - he wouldn't, and still won't.

And quilting - I do quilting! Can recommend books and things. Message me on fb?

ktpie · 16/07/2010 16:30

Bugger - yes I'm KB, let me know your email address and I'll send it to you.

We never did co-sleeping, mostly because DH is a heavy sleeper and it worried me having them in the bed all night.

This is my problem with religion, I'm not sure if there is a God, sometimes I'd like to think there is, but sometimes religion just seems like it's being used as an excuse for people to behave badly and control other people, does that make sense? Hope that doesn't offend any religious folk, all the good stuff about religion I haven't got a problem with

Back from the shops. I went to Monsoon because it is between Gap and WHS which I needed to visit. A good move because their sale was on, so I got a necklace, 6 hair slides and a little tin carry case for the grand total of £7.50! When the woman told me the total I asked her to double check. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I think the Peter and the Wolf CD might be good for Xmas when I will need to post to Canada.

DebInAustria · 16/07/2010 21:17

Sybil -hope J is better soon

Spider - bargain, glad I could help ( I love buying for girls)

DebInAustria · 16/07/2010 21:38

Goddess - I am ignoring any Christmas present comments on here!!!!

PenguinNZ · 17/07/2010 08:54

Hello, just keeping this on my threads. Heard baby penguin's HB yesterday morning. Very exciting. Telling ILs 2m....SIL & BIL are currently TTC and have been for a while (about 8 months?). Can any of you offer any words of wisdom on the best way to tell them, obviously as tactfully as possible?

SpiderWilliam · 17/07/2010 09:26

Lovely news Penguin. How many weeks are you? No words of advice on this one. Sure someone else will be along shortly.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 17/07/2010 09:30

How lovely Penguin - it's great to hear it for the first time.

No advice re: your SIL and BIL I'm afraid, only that I would tell them quite directly and not try and say it in a roundabout way or dress it up with apologies. I'm sure they'll be delighted for you, but if they are a bit off or anything don't take it personally. They'll just be really wishing it was their turn.

I was ridiculously jealous when my DB announced they were expecting - we hadn't even started trying, they had been married for a year longer than us, but as the eldest I wanted to be first . Obviously that's not the same btw, it just popped into my head.

Thanks for all the religion chat, not got time to come back to it now but might later if that's ok with the non-religious folks.

Has Amber been on recently btw - not seen her at all I think?

Fab penguin . And second dgt view to tell em straight out as it may be hard or it may not ( fwiw my reaction to others pregnancy was very mixed and does depend on how I feel about them).

Sat In hospital waiting to do pre op
Stuff (been here for hours) which can be a bit draining as can be an askeban like experience sitting amongst women losing babies. This morning tho most trying TGIF is that they have had hours (I am not jojif) of a take that show on waiting room tv...

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 17/07/2010 12:51

Sorry you're going through this Poppy. Sending supportive vibes your way x

penguin, 8 mths not that long IMO but my advice in these circumstances is always to tell people who may be upset by the news in a phone call and never face to face. Reason being is that they then have time to compose themselves (if necessary) before seeing you.

Lovely news on HB x

EddieIzzardismyhero · 17/07/2010 13:43

Oh and if anyone can help me with this I would be extrememly grateful .

M just crawled out of the playroom and I assumed he'd gone into the living room - went into retrieve him about three minutes later, nowhere to be seen . . . found him at the top of the stairs !

I think he's going to keep me on my toes in the next few months!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 17/07/2010 14:09

No help with the doors I'm afraid Eddie, I always just keep doors shut. I think those Lakeland stoppers would be a magnet for someone M's age.

SpiderWilliam · 17/07/2010 18:08

How did you get on Poppy? Thinking of you.

Random question to those of you living in Scotland. What kind of attitude is there to English people (southerners at that) who move north of the border? This is only hypothetical. However DH is looking at a new job, and something came up in Edinburgh. I'm not even sure whether he said he was interested to the recruiter. The reason I ask is because my reaction to the idea of moving to Scotland surprised me. I thought "I'll just get grief for being English", but I have no idea whether that is fair or not. Does it vary by region/city? In fact the idea of living in Scotland has always appealed to me, and I applied to uni in Edinburgh and Glasgow. So I was surprised that I felt hesitant about the idea. I have only visited 3 times: once when I was 3, once for a 21st birthday (

neenz · 17/07/2010 19:01

at M climbing the stairs Eddie!

PP, lovely news on the hb. I think telling BIL/SIL over phone is good idea - do you know that they do feel desperate for a baby, 8mths not that long, tho I suppose if they are trying they are bound to feel a little jealous. Almost straight after my mc, BIL/SIL got pg and didn't know how to tell us. They decided to leave it until they came up to visit the family (they were staying at MIL's) then announced it on the day we were all going out for a family meal. Then it was all apologies and 'we didn't know how to tell you'. I had to put a brave face on and congratulate them of course, but had a shitty night because I was so devastated that I had lost my baby and they were pg. If they had just rung a few days I would have had time to get my head round it before seeing them. And also I would have appreciated if they didn't make a big deal about not knowing how to tell us. Hope that makes sense.

Dewin, I am with you on bishops! I just don't get the hierarchical nature of the Church (except that humans were bound to do it like that I suppose because like Katy said it's about control and being in charge ). Jesus never spoke about women as church leaders. He said love God, love each other (that's pretty much it!) so all this crap about gay people and women is nonsense imo and is just human bigotry. at what the Pope said, but then I have never understood the whole 'Pope as God's spokesperson on earth' thing either. That's definitely not in the bible! We have a female curate who is fab (and the two before her were too!).

Love that WW clip - I remember that episode. Don't they all look young. As far as I am concerned the Old Testament means nothing, Jesus wiped all that clean. He said the only way to the Father is through me (he didn't say unless you are gay or accept women as bishops).

I am tired today - got the kids in bed by 6.30pm. They didn't go to sleep at naptime today (went to bed for 1.5hrs but didn't sleep). E has sobbed herself to sleep tonight which is so unusual - just so tired I think. Maybe I need to put them down for their rest later in the afternoon when they are more likely to go to sleep. But by 12noon I need them to go to bed, not sure I could last till 2

neenz · 17/07/2010 19:01

Thinking of you Poppy xxx

poppy34 · 17/07/2010 19:15

Have you checked out safetots site eddie as that has best safety stuff? I tend to either put stair gate on or made great use of a playpen in the playroom
When e was at that age. He does seem a determined little man tho...

Sorry for weirdly worded post(I can seem
To read or correct on my phone). All set for op on weds although the doc who worked on my consent could do with some work on his bedside manner as I didn't come away reassured about risks given that have had an ercp and 2 assisted third stages before (which was why i didn't go for the op straight off). But two hours of take that was bad...I used to quite Like them.

I feel your pain neenz about veing ore tired as bedtime can be Very fraught. Big bed is up so wish us luck for tonight (we waved off the cot earlier).

EddieIzzardismyhero · 17/07/2010 19:56

poppy, that's an excellent website, thank you. Think we will try this as it seems the best option. spider, thank you for your help on my thread - cats are a PITA sometimes!

Neenz, yes, M is a very determined little thing - and utterly fearless with it. Four days ago he couldn't climb one step, now he manages the whole flight . Scary.

I'm sat in the bedroom doing CC with M at the moment, weaning him off his evening feed cos of the "suck to sleep" association he has now . This is courtesy of my sleep consultant (aka spider ) who I spoke to last night. I do remember we had to go through this with A too - it's horrendous. He's screaming his head off at the mo and it's breaking my heart, but we can't go on .

As for Scotland, I think you would be mad to move there spider - it's a bloody awful place, rains constantly and the people are awful . Friends of ours moved to Dunblane last year and they absolutely love it - have no problem with being English at all. They say the quality of life they are able to offer their two children there in comprison to the south east of England is just incredible - and they've been extremely impressed with the education system so far too.

However, I do have a Scottish friend who lives down here and is married to an English guy who moved up to Scotland when he was 8 and he was bullied badly - but we're talking twenty five years ago and kids bully for all sorts of reasons don't they?

Personally I think Edinburgh is an absolutely gorgeous city - we contempleted moving there at one time but already felt very cut off from our southern friends when living in York so didn't want to move even further away. Although it doesn't seem far, when you have kids it can be quite a hassle to do the journey - as we're now finding!

We'd miss you though so don't move .

And don't forget when Scotland eventually runs out of oil and England cut them off without a penny their taxes will rocket .

M still crying - it's going to be a long evening .

abdnhiker · 17/07/2010 20:39

spider there's a bit of joking about it up here, especially during six nations, but it's not that bad I don't think. There are so many English around here because of the oil industry that it's almost a non-issue, except apparently during history class at school where they act out William Wallace... You'd love it up here, it's an amazing standard of living, but it is colder than down south...

good luck with the bed tonight poppy, there's a pic on my facebook of Fraser's bed time sleeping position last night...

eddie hope M sleeps soon - lots more oil up here too apparently - as prices go up all sorts of small fields get more affordable.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 17/07/2010 20:52

M still crying . Dh has taken over and turned off the monitor and turned up the tv in the hope I can't hear, but I can . An hour he's been crying now - amazingly A fell asleep 30 mins ago though .

AH, good news about the oil .

EddieIzzardismyhero · 17/07/2010 21:01

He's gone to sleep. Finally .

Dh tells me it was 90 mins all told . But he's fast asleep now, we've just been to check on him. Let's hope it's not so painful tomorrow night.

Apparently A kept on saying "Night, night Bubble" as if to say, "please just go to sleep" .

SpiderWilliam · 17/07/2010 21:11

Eddie get out of the house and go for a walk round the block whilst DH handles it. You realise that I now feel shit too because you are acting on my advice .

Interesting about the Scottish thing. I would expect a bit of banter round 6 nations time, that's exactly what goes on here. I just wondered whether it can be more nasty than that. I really don't think we are about to move to Scotland, so don't worry Eddie, not about to abandon this neck of the woods. DH is finding it hard working out what he would want from a new job let alone where he would want it to be. Current top option is a job in Slough (I would refuse to leave here for that though) he could drive.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 17/07/2010 21:16

"Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now . . ."

Don't you dare feel bad spider, your advice was invaluable - if you hadn't reminded me about the whole evening routinue/sucking to sleep thing we'd have been going through this hell at 1am not 8pm . Much better we get this sorted first and then move onto sorting out the night feeds.

I think I will go for a walk tomorrow though - although poor dh is feeling really crap now .

SpiderWilliam · 17/07/2010 21:17

Split post cos of IPhone.

AH - cant tell you how much I would like to move somewhere for a better quality of life. Most of our friends are within an hour of here though and I know it would be hard starting over. When the Edinburgh option came up I though "I don't know anyone there", then thought "Aha: DGT".

DebInAustria · 17/07/2010 22:28

Just a quick post in case the power goes down as we have yet another thunderstorm here but no hailstones this time - did you see the photos on FB, huge!

Hope all toddlers and babies sleep well tonight

Poppy - sounds unbearable(take that for 2 hours!!) Thinking of you x
