I tried to post from my blackberry last night but it didn't post and couldn't be bothered to do it again!!

csws - good point. I'm swapping to bt as soon as this is fixed! And yes, that was exactly my point. That is why I like to write it as cf and not CF because cf is the way you see it mathematically. Sorry I made that confusing. That's why I said cf not CF. and that's why I like writing it.

Pistachio - have fun!!! Feel better, too !

Ksal - mother spot is usually on the tummy afaik. But, don't you have to take some precautions if it is indeed, chickenpox since you are pg? I was going to also say that when Q got them the chemist near me (who also works in London) said that there is a LOT of chickenpox going around at the moment, so they have probably assumed since it's about (?maybe?). In any case, I hope it's not and if it is, I hope it goes quickly for you

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/05/2010 09:03

star - CP no risk to pregnancy as long as KSal has had CP herself.

coconutfeet · 14/05/2010 09:12

Well I keep reading cf or CF and forgetting that it's me.

Ronshar - I'm not sure how it is in your part of the world but the school nurse at our school covers quite a large area with lots of schools I think. I know she visits regularly but I've never met her, as they don't seem to do much whole school stuff. She just deals with children that teachers have raised concerns about. Certainly they don't do nit-checking like they used to when I was at school. I would imagine private schools probably have a nurse on site all the time.

KSal - Any signs of spots today? The mother spot can be on the fact. S's at the side of his nose.

Pistachio - Have good weekend. What do you do about BFing while you're away? Dp keeps suggesting I go away for a couple of days for a break but I'm nervous about S going without his milk.

Well S had a decent night last night for the first time in absolutely ages. He woke once and dp dealt with him so I actually feel a bit rested for the first time in AGES.

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/05/2010 09:20

That's cause I got to do your night feed last night instead cf .

I expect he'll ask for it anyway pistachio - they are cheeky buggers like that .

50ft - if you do come and stay at the end of half term then you get to come to pudding club with me on the Friday night! Though the host for this one has suggested that Waitrose will be doing most of the catering rather than her!

KSal · 14/05/2010 09:52

well she had a few small spots this morning, so i have kept her at home (put myself in nursery's shoes)... but I'm really not convinced as they seem to have subsided a bit and she's generally fine. she's currently dancing and trying to wind me up by pretending to eat the guinea pig food. we shall see...

I want to come, too, then csws
glad no risk to Ksal

No school nurse on site?? . Even in all public schools I worked in New York City (very, very deprived areas, little funding) and in other places too... always a school nurse on site. What if there was an emergency?? Or playground cuts? Surely they don't rely on "first aid certification" to care for all of this? I'm first aid certified and always update my cert... but I know our nurses are more qualified to handle that stuff than I am. I am ed that this is not provided in state schools. I'll have to ask DH if his school has one.

StarExpat · 14/05/2010 09:54

Ksal where are the few spots this morning?

It came like that for us... two, then a few, then all of a sudden, he woke from a nap and pop pop pop like popcorn everywhere!

KSal · 14/05/2010 10:16

there's a couple on her feet and a couple on her tummy a couple on her legs... there's no particular pattern.

its ridiculous but part of me wants her to have it so that this won't all have been for nothing... which is crackers because if she does have its potentially a nightmare.

star i'd be surprised if your DHs school has a nurse on site - at mine it was always someone like the secretary who was trained in first aid.

StarExpat · 14/05/2010 10:19

That is not ok imo. There should be a nurse on site at schools. They are so concerned about health and safety... put the money spent on ofsted checking risk assessments into a school nurse instead. ffs.

Ksal that sounds like cp.

coconutfeet · 14/05/2010 11:24

Star - I agree with you that it's all wrong but there just isn't the money for a full time nurse. In our school there are some first aiders on hand to deal with injuries. If there's a real emergency they call an ambulance. Our school runs out of pencils by around May becuase the budget is used up and the teachers end up having to buy them themselves otherwise the children wouldn't be able to do any writing. I had to buy loads of PVA glue for an art project in the summer term once because there was none in the school. One teacher actually painted her classroom (by stealth over the holidays) because it was in such a shocking state.

And I doubt very much that things will improve with our new administration.

Oh, and thanks for doing my night feed CSWS! Are you having to get up a lot at the moment?

StarExpat · 14/05/2010 12:02

Sounds awful, cf. We had a similar situation in NYC(very rough area of brooklyn), always running out of supplies, having to buy our own, not enough desks...etc. But we still had a school nurse. Maybe it helped that individual states funded their schools rather than nationally? . Or maybe the nurse was a part of some other funding. I have no idea. It's shocking how little public/state education is valued by governments.

Ekka · 14/05/2010 21:37

Ksal - any more spots? Lets hope that if your dd has it then she isn't too poorly with it.

cf, that is terrible. I didn't realise that some schools were so short of cash

So, I am unlikely to be going back to work - there aren't any jobs at my old firm at the moment, and I can't find any part time roles locally either. Mind you, as our cm has decided to give up and go and work in a school, it does mean I don't have to panic about childcare...

StarExpat · 15/05/2010 10:25

How is Emma, Ksal?

Ekka is that a happy or a sad thing that you won't be going back to work? I can't tell the tone from your post.

StarExpat · 15/05/2010 10:37

Can I ask - what's the difference between child tax credit and child benefit? And does everyone receive these or only low incomes? Just wondering how it all works, really. We get nothing. I don't feel that we should as we're currently on a work visa and won't get Indefinite Leave to Remain until next year and even then I wouldn't ever expect or want anything, but just wondering what they are after browsing some threads on here and hearing the news of late.

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/05/2010 13:06

Yes, there's a lot of garbage on some of those threads (and a few people who actually have the facts)!
Child benefit is money paid to everyone who has a child (under 12 or something like that I think). It's an amount per child, although you get more for the first than for subsequent children. It is not means tested, and although it's nice to have a handout, I have no idea why the government think that I need to be paid to have children .
Child tax credit is a means tested benefit, and I'll bow to others to explain more about it, as not being entitled to anything means tested means that I'm a bit hazy on the details of working tax credit/child tax credit etc.

StarExpat · 15/05/2010 15:32

Perfect csws that's all I needed to know. How weird that everyone gets money just for having kids..... ... especially when we're in a recession and nhs and schools need money... odd.

Good that the other is means tested

KSal · 15/05/2010 18:45

I don't think it is CP... saw a few spots on her feet this morning... but really nothing happening since then. Surely if it was CP it would have got going by now?

been doing lots of gardening today and cursing the neihgbours cat who seems to be using my flowers beds for a litter tray. I have been wearing gloves just in case.

i agree re the child benefit... apparently one argument is that it would cost loads of money to means test it and its not worth it... which seems crackers but wouldn't surprise me given how inefficient everything government related is....

StarExpat · 15/05/2010 19:17

how would that cost money and be difficult?

Step 1: Look at salary
Step 2: Decide if salary is more than threshold or less than threshold.
Step 3: Give to those with less than threshold.

If they want, I can get my class to do it. They were able to do this level of math in September.

Ksal, Q's didn't appear fully until after his nap on Monday and I suspected it from a few tiny spots randomly on his body the Friday before (GP didn't believe me). Having said that, I hope for your sake that it's not cp.

Weird to just get spots, though. Does she have eczema?

Ekka · 15/05/2010 22:20

Hmm, not sure whether I am happy or sad about not going back to work. I think I'd feel horribly guilty if I did go back (as financially I don't NEED to) but equally I'm a bit gutted that I'm surplus to requirements and slightly scared re pensions/retirement as dh is quite a few years older than me and has worked all over the world, so no real pension pots or anything. Plus, as an accountant I'm already 3 years out of date and I've missed out on loads so the longer I'm out of work the less employable I become.....

I am gutted about the cm thing tbh. She is quitting for really good reasons and in her shoes I would do the same, but I was nearly in tears about it as ds has just settled there and I've been enjoying a few really great days just with dd, which has been brilliant. I'm not going to get another cm as we don't need it work-wise and I think settling ds would be hard, plus our cm is so brilliant, I think I'd always be comparing unfavourably....

Child benefit goes on until 16 or 18 if your dc is in full time education, and the person who claims it gets those years counted as qualifying years towards their state pension, even if they aren't paying NI...

KSal · 15/05/2010 22:43

ok, so i still have tomorrow before i have to make another nursery decision... DH will be away again then, so hope its not too tricky.

She does get eczema too, but itshard to put it all down to that...
