Thought I'd start a Post-Natal thread as there are so many of us now sorry about the uninspired name.
Well I am slowly realising the sleepless nights thing is no myth - VERY tired!

rumple first the raw chicken wedding dance (it was a chicken wasn't it?!) now bandaging legs, why do they bandage babies' legs?
We are doing well, although DH just phoned to say he'd driven all the way to work with DD in the back before remembering he was supposed to be dropping her at nursery (8 miles back the way ). She's doing two days a week, it seems really quiet without her but it's nice to have time just with Alexander. He's good as gold really but is unsettled in the evenings unless I cuddle him, which is making cooking and tidying up a bit tricky. Oh well .

Zeeky · 19/05/2010 20:58

Had a few probs with feeding the last few days. Mon night George woke at 3 but wouldn't latch on. I spent 2 hrs trying to latch him on with no success by which time we were both exhausted. My mum is staying at moment, so she took him for an hour until he woke again at 6. Managed to latch him on after half an hr, but the problem continued all day. He ended up going 6 or 7 hrs between feeds before finally laching on, and only with me lying down to feed. He's been feeding fine for the last week or two since my milk came in. As soon as I put him to the breast he starts clawing me, kicking, screaming or just lying there with nip in his mouth doing nothing. I've had to express a couple of times as my boobs were getting so engorged and painful from missing feeds. Really confused as to what would cause it. I had garlic bread on mon night - would this have such a severe reaction? He's been a bit better today - feeding more regularly but still a bit of a struggle to get him to latch on properly.

Any ideas what could cause it? Would wind/colic cause him to react like that? Once latchedon he feeds calmly and well for about half hour and then settles well until next feed.

I'm pretty sure it's not the garlic bread Zeeky, I've been eating all sorts. I agree, it might be thrush, although I've just recovered from horrible breast thrush and it didn't really bother the baby. Hopefully it will pass in a day or two, otherwise perhaps you should check with your doctor or health visitor.

rumpleteaser · 20/05/2010 06:23

Yes it was a chicken, cooked though.
They used to bandage the legs to straighten them out, reminds of the Geishas with tiny bound feet. Horrid.
I have to try and put something red on him every day as well to protect baby from people with evil eyes. I'm running out of clothes with red on..
Sorry I can't be of any help to the breastfeeding probs but hopefully my tales of strange Bulgarian customs will cheer you up!
Can't wait for his christening!

nicnacinoonoo · 20/05/2010 08:45

what age are most people planning the christening for? with ds we did it at about 4 months which was a nice age, was going to do that again however the only dates in july and august that the minister is free and my brother can make it up here are my cousins little boys first birthday and the anniversary of when my other cousin died 2 years ago, so dont want to do it on either of those dates. which puts us in september with ds just starting school so dont want him to have such a hectic day and prob late night when he's got school the next day, especially when its all new to him. so thinking of the first school holidays which will be 24th october which will make her nearly 7 months. not sure if thats a bit old though as she wont be as baby like then, but on the plus side it might mean she'll look a bit more like a girl ha.

Mistymoo · 20/05/2010 10:03

Rumpleteaser I don't think the money in the pram is just a Bulgarian tradition as the older ones do it here in the Highlands.

I'm taking ds to the dr this morning because his naval is still leaking pus and I was wondering if it was infected as he's very unsettled and started being sick a lot more over the last 2 days. Hopefully he will give me some advice.

Zeeky · 20/05/2010 15:53

Saw the health visitor this morning to get George weighed. He's put on 4.5oz in a week. But she was not much help on the feeding problem. She ruled out thrush though as he hasn't got any White stuff in b
his mouth & once he latches on he feeds fine. She can't understand it as he's been feeding fine for 2 weeks. She thought it was unlikely that it was something I'd eaten as it would be out of my system by now. He fed at 4.20am then not until 11.30am & is still not latching on now after half hr of trying. Think I will have to go to one of the local breastfeeding clinics tomorrow if things are no better. Feel like I can't leave the house as don't know when & how he is going to feed!

Haven't used a dummy or finger (not since sister-in-law had her finger in his mouth when he was only a week old much to our annoyance - posted previously about it!). He was feeding fine until mon night. Just can't fathom it. Resorted to giving him expressed milk from a bottle earlier as he had gone 8 hrs since last proper feed. He took it no problem - about 4oz. Not really sure how much he should be having . really didn't want to introduce a bottle yet as he is only 3 weeks old so worried that bf'ing isn't established enough yet (which it obviously isn't, going by the probs I'm having this week).

Going to go to the bf'ing drop-in clinic at the hospital tomorrow morning to see if they can help. Never had any problems feeding DS1, which is why I am getting so frustrated this time.

Mistymoo · 20/05/2010 22:38

Hi Zeeky. Do you use anything to help bring up wind? I find that my ds struggles to latch on if he's just had infacol because it makes his mouth slippy and although he does latch on it is more difficult for him.

I hope the drop in clinic can help you. Try not to get frustrated (I know that's easier said than done - I wish I could put that into practice) I'm sure it will sort itself out soon.

Zeeky · 20/05/2010 23:25

No mistymoo haven't been using infacol, but was thinking maybe I should?

harverina · 20/05/2010 23:26

Hi all, I am fairly new to mumsnet, only been visiting since my DD was born on 5th April. I am glad I have found this thread as its great to speak to mums who have babies at the same stage. Hope you dont mind me gate crashing as you all seem to know each other v.well!

My DD is almost 7 weeks old. Had a scare this week when she was making high pitched breathing every so often. Went to hosp and paediatrician said its likely to be floppy larynx although he did not hear her making the noise as she only makes the noise every so often. Anyone else experienced this. She is still making the noise every so often - sometimes not doing it for hours then making just one or two noisy breaths.

Thanks

nicnacinoonoo · 21/05/2010 08:55

hi harverina, Kacie makes a few high pitched wheezy sort of breaths whilst feeding sometimes. i asked the health visitor and she said its probably just to do with wind, although she never actually heard it. its a horrible sounding noise but it doesnt seem to bother her.

Hi harvenina Alexander makes the most horrible gasping noises sometimes, I asked HV and she said as long as he wasn't turning blue it was OK and normal .
Zeeky Alex seems to have got worse at latching, sometimes I have to try and then give up for a bit and go back and try again. Like you, once he's on he's fine. It is weird as he started off like a complete pro. I'm hoping it'll just sort itself out, he seems happy enough.
We're off to Dorset for the weekend, was going to wear my nice sundress as it's so hot and then remembered it's tricky getting my boobs out of it so I'll leave the sundresses to DD.

Mistymoo · 21/05/2010 09:09

Bettymum that's one thing I do miss when bfing, not being able to wear my dresses. Will just have to get some nice tops to make up for it

lineky · 21/05/2010 09:25

Hi all sorry about your feeding probs Zeeky Hazel often throws a strop attacking my boob in a freenzy rather than latching but we get there eventually. She is using a dummy and having a bottle once a day but seems to be coping.
She had her first night in the cot in her own room last night I was worried but she seemed to like it. She was also in a sleeping bag instead of a swaddle which she also appeared to approve of.
We had to move her as the noise from her was beyond a joke and not getting any better! Now I know she is ok when screeching, squeeking, screaming etc etc...
DH and I both got a good nighs sleep - Joy

Thanks for everyone's advice/support re George's feeding probs. Went to bf clinic on fri morn & they have shown me a new position which he is able to latch on straight away in. I have to sit him upright in my lap facing me & bring him straight forwards towards my breast. Seems to work although is not overly comfortable for me as have to sit up very straight & hold him with both hands, so can no longer read or email while feeding, & after half hr I get very stiff. But I'm just so relieved that he is feeding properly again that I'll put up with anything at the moment. The midwife at the clinic was at a bit of a loss as to why he had suddenly lost his ability to latch, but said it is probably just a blip. He looked so fat & healthy compared to the other babies there who had been having problems feeding for weeks .

DH's birthday so just been out for a lovely lunch. Luckily George slept the whole time & didn't wake for feed until we got home, as didn't really fancy demonstrating my new bf'ing position in public quite yet!

stinkypinky · 22/05/2010 18:39

Zeeky sounds a tricky position! Glad it is working.

Billie gets quite lazy with her latch, but when really hungry at night she latches on immediately. She is feeding frequently in the heat, and I am shattered, but nights are improving, settling around 9, up around 1 then at 5. She is resisting naps during the day too recently... maybe to do with heat too.

Happy birthday to Mr Zeeky

harverina · 22/05/2010 22:13

Thanks bettymum and nicnac, makes me feel a bit better that you have experienced somthing similar. The noises do tend to be during feeds and when she is beging burped. Though they happen at other times soemtimes.

bettymum and mistymoo re; wearing dresses, I have started to wear dresses and tunics with leggings and just lift them up to feed. My leggings go quite high on my tummy anyway. Have fed outside a couple of times doing this and its been ok. Rather than miss out wearing nice dresses Id rather do this.

Eilidh is now 7 weeks and have just started to express during last couple of days. Went to hairdressers today, was out for 4 hours and left 5 oz of expressed milk for DH to give her. She took 3oz at one sitting then the other 2oz two hours later. She wasnt offered anymore as it was all I had left - does anyone know if this is the right sort of amount to be expressing?

lineky · 23/05/2010 09:01

harveneria Hazel is 8 weeks and I was expressing 4 - 5oz a day for her which the health Visitor suggested. I've just stopped and moved to a formula feed once a day as I found the expressing too time consuming and a bit depressing.
Interesting that you think the heat affects feeding Stinky Hazel fed a lot more yesterday and didn't nap at all and I thought that might be the heat. Anyone else experienced the same?
Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and getting to grips with sunscreen slippy babies!
