HT, my dad is the same as your mum, everytime my babies have cried he says they're not getting enough and we should get the formula. Fortunately my mum tells him to shut up, coz she regrets not feeding us. The solution we have found is to not tell him that he's under-gaining.

Just had a thought, have you had him measured? Could it be that he's growing in length rather than padding out?

rubyslippers · 04/12/2009 10:07

HC - how is M this morning?

calypso - whoop @ the non sicky baby!!

Iggly - Ruby is not a brill sleeper. She cluster feeds ALL evening with barely a break. last night she fed from 6 ish until she conked out at 10.45 pm. Have you tried infacol for the wind?

to all those with poorly babies i hope they are on the mend - so worrying when they are so tiny.

not much planned for today - will go out at some point or DS goes a bit stir crazy

x

Igglybuff · 04/12/2009 10:16

Hi Ruby yes we've tried it but we're not convinced! So trying gripe water instead. It's annoying because it will be the tiniest bit of wind we've missed which will wake him (he'll do a big burp a few times, sleep, then wake up and do a tiny burp!!). I've also figured that he thinks bed time is anywhere between 1-4am as if we get him to sleep around then, he'll sleep for up to five hours... At least it's a start...

rubyslippers · 04/12/2009 10:27

with the infacol it is more effective the more you use it - so use it before every feed and every day

Ruby is quite windy - she trumps like a bloke

Treats · 04/12/2009 11:33

Hi ladies - sorry not to have been around.

princessmel - sorry to hear about Freddie. has there been any improvement today? Agree that you should take him straight to A&E if you're worried at all. I hope he feels better soon.

HT - Hang in there and just go with your instincts. I have to say that we started substituting the late night feed for formula from quite an early stage (all the other feeds are breast) because I found it easier to manage that way. And she sleeps through so we daren't change back now! I'm not joining the chorus of people telling you to give him formula, but don't set yourself against it so much that you won't even consider it as an occasional last ditch solution to get you through the night. I definitely find it to be a valuable back up in stressful moments. Very bad of your bf counsellor to pass things on to your HV - that information should be confidential!

Calypso - great news about Annalise's vomiting, and hopefully it's the solution to getting her back up her centile chart. Fingers crossed it happens before you see the HV. (Sorry not to have replied to your text yet - will get onto it soon!)

Iggly - welcome to the thread and to hear about the sleeping issues. I have nothing helpful to suggest I'm afraid, but just to say that they develop so quickly at this age, that everything changes every few weeks, so it might all be better very soon!

(Just caught up on the rest of the thread and heard about your book, so you know this already.......)

Felixis - welcome to you also! Whereabouts in London are you? If you're South/ South West, we could get together if you need some company.

took Isabel for her jabs on Monday and just wanted to warn those who haven't done it yet how traumatic it was. I don't know who cried more - me or her. I totally wasn't expecting it but i just burst into floods once I realised that she'd registered the pain. Might have to get DH to take her for the next ones - i dont' think I can bear it.....

littlepea72 · 04/12/2009 11:59

HT my DS1 had to be bottle feed as i had MRSA & he was still underweight, even though he was having a bottle every 2 hours, so dont let anyone tell you that you should change from the breast. He was longer in length and very slight outwards. Even now he eats no-stop but is really thin, its just been his build from birth. Doesnt help when people start telling you what they think you should do about it, sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

Princess i hope Freddie is ok, how was he last night?

How are you doing Ruby? Getting any better with the sleeping? Faith did really well last night, but its hit or miss when her gums hurt, those teeth are about to break through! Even if i got alt nights with sleep i would be happy.

HC how is M? Dont beat yourself up about the accident, god when i think back to my DS as a baby

Treats i always got my mum to take my son in for his jabs, but she isnt even in the country now! I will have to do it as my DH is away untill near christmas, so im really not looking forward to it, tears all the way

Things have been a bit better with me & my DH, mostly because i dont try to force him with Faith, so he has been trying more. He should be doing alot more, but small steps first i think. She has been smiling alot at him & i think he is melting a bit.

littlepea72 · 04/12/2009 11:59

Sorry about the spelling! Doing 10 things at once

littlepea72 · 04/12/2009 12:03

Was meant to say to HT, Treats is right, nothing wrong with the odd bottle here & there, sometimes is can be a life-saver at nights

Igglybuff · 04/12/2009 12:41

Ruby - we did try for a few days but gave up. However I am willing to try again! Haha trumping lady babies - William trumps like an old man in the mornings!

Thanks Treats - fingers crossed it will get better. Although I should be grateful as Wiliam does sleep for 4-5 hours once he does go down (anywhere between 2-4am at the moment )

BellaCullen · 04/12/2009 15:48

HT dont worry too much about ds weight as long as hes happy and has enough wet nappies youre doing fine. And cant believe everything you say at bfcafe goes back to HV..That definitely breaks confidentiality.
I think babies all have a time when they slow down putting on weight.Nathaniel put on 1.5ozs two weeks ago and this week hes put 4ozs on and is on 25th centile line dropped from 75th at birth. I saw a different HV this week and she wasnt concerned with his weight gain at all and said were doing great. Hes very long too so will be tall and skinnny.

Calypsoflame glad youre having a breakthrough with the vomiting hopefully dd will putting on more weight now.Cant believe HV just said that the amount of vomiting was normal it sounds a lot to me, poor you.

Princessmel poor little Freddie hope he`ll be better soon.

We tried the BabyWhisperer but Nathaniel hates the shush-pat technique it just doesnt seem to work as he still cries.Whats the secret?
He was sleeping quite well at night but last 2 nights woke up a lot more so hoping for better night tonight.
Sorry to anyone I missed out have a good weekend everyone x

HumphreysCorner · 04/12/2009 20:50

smallone · 05/12/2009 09:06

Morning, please send sympathy for a fallen comrade........I'm having a period!

Couldn't be bfing any more. But it explains why I've been tearing my hair out with dd and why G has been non-stop feeding. grrr

willow77 · 05/12/2009 10:04

Hello,

I'm new to Mumsnet and a first time mummy to an 8 week old adorable little girl called Poppy Rae.

She was 4 weeks early and only weighed a tiny 3lbs 7oz, so as you can imagine things have been a little tough.

I don't know any mums who have young babies and was hoping to meet some through antenatal but never got to go to any! Going to bite the bullet in the New Year and go to the local library for Rhymetime as think it may be less daunting than the baby groups.

Have been reading all this thread and everyone seems to friendly thought I would come and say 'hi' hope you are all well and have a lovely weekend.

Igglybuff · 05/12/2009 11:20

Hi HC William was born at 8pm so a bit younger than Matthew

Hi willow welcome to mumsnet. I'm quite new here too! Has your health visitor put you in touch with any new mum groups? Might be worth going. Poppy is a lovely name, I hope she's doing well

Another crazy night - William at least went down to 3.30am ( ) but I had to wake him at half 8 as he had a very heavy nappy and the last time I left it he got a bit of nappy rash. He's snoozing again now poor tired little man. His feeds are spreading out at least to 2.5-3hours as opposed to 2 but it freaks me out as I keep expecting him to feed but he's not interested!

I've got my first outing with him planned for 18 Dec. I'm scared has anyone else been out without their baby yet?

devilsadvocaat · 05/12/2009 12:58

iggly - i'm out on the 19th! can't wait but already feeling nervous

willow - hi! welcome i used to go to rhyme time with my first ds when i lived in london. it was really good.

charlie still poorly. haven't been out for a few days (except my jogs), ds1 climbing the walls so took him out in the garden earlier when c was in bed. hopefully going to see the xmas lights turned on later.

hope all is well with the ill babies and tired mamas x

Igglybuff · 05/12/2009 13:28

devils we get to be proper adults although I'll be too tired to maintain any decent conversation... William is going to be with his daddy so I'm not too worried.... But I'll have my phone out! We'll have to compare notes once our social outings are done.

I've posted in the sleep thread (again) about DS. DH wonders if we should keep him awake more but DS is so tired from being overtired at nights, I'm very sceptical... I think it'll just make him more grumpy but any thoughts welcome

Saucepanman · 05/12/2009 14:26

Hello everyone, I am a friend of princessmel's and she has asked me to update you all.

She took baby back to GP yesterday and was sent in ambulance to hospital again, lights flashing sirens blaring

They are still there, poor Freddie has been on oxygen, a drip to feed, had bloods taken and all manner of unpleasant things. He's now off oxygen for a while, which must be a good thing, they think it is bronchiolitis caused by the RSV virus. Will let you know if I hear more, though am away from PC most of today.

Please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers x

Igglybuff · 05/12/2009 14:40

Saucepanman, that's terrible news. Thanks for the update - I will be thinking of princess and Freddie.

HumphreysSnowCorner · 05/12/2009 14:41

Oh my goodness, that sounds awful. Please keep us updated and wishing Freddie a speedy recovery.

willow-welcome and congratulations. Pretty name.

smallone-hoping my period stays away longer than yours. Poor you.

I am having my first night out tonight to see the Rocky Horror Show and mum and dad are babysitting. Am missing M already.

HappyTangerine · 05/12/2009 15:50

saucepan Please send Mel our love, give her a big hug from me. Poor Freddie, wishing him a speedy recovery. Saying a prayer for them all x

fluffycats · 05/12/2009 18:42

Blimey have been chasing the thread for the last month but it keeps running away from me so have had to skip to the end in the hope I can catch up at a later date!

CalypsoFramboise and HT I'm having the same problem as you with lack of growth although Ella was fairly small when she was born, 6lb 10oz and now at nearly 2 months she is only 7lb 8oz. She has nearly fallen off of the scale completely. She seems to be feeding fine and is a fairly content baby as far as I can see but she just doesn't seem to be putting on much weight.

I have read some advice on fattening them up:

Express before feeding so when they go on they get more of the fatty hind milk or
Express after feeding again to collect the hind milk to top them up with later.

Full breasts contain less fat where as emptier ones contain more fatty milk.

Seems as though I will have to spend the whole of next week over feeding and expressing before heading back to the clinic to weigh in again.

Will go to the BF group again tomorrow to check that I am actually BFing correctly.

Does anyone know what they do if baby continues gaining no weight? I really don't want to be told to switch to formula as I really don't believe this can be better for her.

She only poo's once every other day too, (she wee's an awful lot though) is this normal?

HappyTangerine · 05/12/2009 18:49

Thanks for all the info/support re this weight issue.I am happy with him, can't belive how all this has blown up. Still seething over the bf cafe. Given that bf woman is going to report back to hv so "we can look at feeding" if he's not put on weight we'll just have to see how the week goes

If I have to move to formula, which one is best and are there any issues with wind/constipation? I have to say, I've completely lost confidence in my breastfeeding at the moment.Ive not ecen expressed yet (beyond that silliness with antibiotics) as bf counsdellor told me not to while we wee getting latch established. Finding it all a but stressful to be honest.

Today, Joseph has discovered crinkly paper and has had great fun to the point of overstimulation. He's still sleepy in the afternoons and incredibly awake at night. How active/alert are your babies during the day and when do they sleep? Hv asked me if oJoseph's awake/alert times are as normal pattern but I don't know what normal is.

smallone sending you a big bar of virtual chocolate

willow Welcome and congratulations on the birth of your daughter!Lovely name

devils sending grt well vibes to Charlie

Iggy Hope you have a better night. I've had a couple of shopping hours in town without ds but thats it. It was weird to have my hands so free - I found myself rocking bsck and forth while standing on queues as well!

Bella I wish I had such chilled out hvs. How is Nathaniel's eye btw?

Treats Has the top up affected your supply at all? Sleeping through the night is sooo tempting, we are seriously sleep deprived

calypso Yay for progress on the vomiting! that yiu are also having weight gain issues. Keep us posted as to how you get on.

HC Really glad the nosebleeds have stopped

Sorry if I missed anyone out, I keep dropping off to sleep writing this. Big hug to the babies that are are unwell. x

devilsadvocaat · 05/12/2009 19:02

oh my god poor freddie and pm

charlie is having massive coughing fits. called nhs direct today as was so worried. gp called back and said they won't come out and if i was worried to come to a and e. not that easy with a 2yo on a saturday night. the gp was fairly dismissive of my concern and said they wouldn't be able to prescribe anything as it is viral (saw gp on weds). he is sleeping now but when he starts coughing he can't stop for ages.
