jael - Glad you had a good day. We went on the train and bus with A for the first time today, she slept a lot too, had a feed and then smiled at everyone! Hope the weigh in goes ok tomorrow.

llareggub · 21/09/2009 23:02

flippineck, have you tried baby massage? It is hard to explain on here but some of the baby massage techniques are really good for eradicating wind.

Try rubbing some olive oil on your hands, then gently, with the heel of your hand, rub from left to right on the tummy. You can also try bringing the legs to the chest and back again but don't force the legs. There is another baby massage technique for wind but I won't even attempt to explain it as I cna't think of a way that will make any sense at all.

If you are going to do baby massage naked then put her on a mat as it often results in a big poo or wee!

flippineck · 21/09/2009 23:03

Guacamole? What a daft question. Of course. And jalapenos, salsa, sour cream, melted cheese. On extra large plates.

Bugger. I'm hungry now too.

flippineck · 21/09/2009 23:08

lleregub - we've sort of tried baby massage in that we rub her tummy slightly unscientifically (circular and clockwise; up from sides to the centre; and kind of stroke down). Perhaps I ought to try it properly with oil etc and see what happens. What's the best time of day to do it? Her wind is at it's worst in the middle of the night - can't see me getting the oil out at 2am! Maybe in the evening between feeds before bed.

Actually, there's a question that mght be relevant to the fartiness - evenings feeds. A still almost 'cluster feeds in the evenings, that can't be helping can it. Do any of the other BF LOs still cluster feed? DD1 had got past it by this age.

llareggub · 21/09/2009 23:19

DS2 definitely feeds more in the evening, really out of habit I think. I feed him to sleep because it is easier. DH held him after his bath this evening and he fell asleep by himself, so it is definitely habit and not need. Having said that, he woke up around 9ish and he doesn't do that when I feed him to sleep.

I've no idea when the best time to massage might be. I just do it when he has wind and then obviously don't use the oil if it during the night. I usually put DS upright over my shoulder after a feed and this usually prompts a burp or two. Having said that, his wind is a lot better recently and he is going longer between feeds.

llareggub · 21/09/2009 23:20

Actually, I do massage after his bath. Maybe is works in a cumulative way?

ReeBee · 22/09/2009 08:29

hello ladies

Just cleaning our house ready for the surveyor to come at 9.30am so no time to write.

Hope everyone is well. Lots of colds here too, boo.

Good news though - DH had his 121 discussion yesterday about his job / redundancy potential and he gets to keep his existing role - yay - and they have offered him a promotion to do it!!!! We were amazed - think it's because other parts of the business had offered him roles and they thought he wouldn't stay otherwise. Hurrah hurrah hurrah.

Sorry not to namecheck, off to sweep floors / hoover. Love it.

Then am having lunch with my boss at 12pm when I need to talk about returning to work and the fact I'd like to be full time but only do a day a week in the office

ladyhelen2 · 22/09/2009 08:30

Morning. on line early this morning.

Did I miss the nachos last night. Buggerations. I heart nachos with all the trimmings.

name pronunciation I didn't think you could mis pronounce either of mines' names. Noah. Pretty straight forward. Ditto Rufus. But DH has an ex work colleague who is elderly (80 at least) and incredibly posh. He and his wife are some of the loveliest people we know and we see them regularly. They have real trouble with Noah. You'd think it was a new fangled name and not one of the oldest names known to man as they pro nounce is Nor. Its quite funny and we'll never say anything as they would be mortified.

R seems to be getting into the habit of doing a huge poo at 3.30am. It goes all up his back and wakes him. So I have to do a complete change of nappy babygro and gro bag which wakes him more. He then thinks, well I'm awake and I quite fancy some milk now so I'll not settle until I've had a few ounces. I'll let her know by crying.

So, I'm awake so think may as well feed the little fella. And then he does go back down. But how on earth are we going to be able to kill the middle of the night poo? We've also gone back to the dream feed ( in fact we only managed about 2 nights without it anyway) and see if that makes a difference.

grumpy a ranty post has never been more eagerly awaited!!!

ladyhelen2 · 22/09/2009 08:32

Meant to say, having gone back to dream feeding, we'll maybe trying dropping it properly this time. Maybe that will stop the night poos.

SpangleMaker · 22/09/2009 08:37

Morning all

V quick hello & thanks to Grumpy for new thread - been busy over the last few days & had a quick read now and then but no time to post.

Ses congrats on O's tooth Our babies are really growing up now!

Jael yes we should definitely meet up some time. Wednesdays are best for me (the only day we don't have a H-related activity ), how about you?

Frazz hellloooo!

Right gotta rescue the washing - v annoyingly left it out last night & now ominous grey clouds are moving in. See you all later - have good days all.

Reggiee · 22/09/2009 08:39

Hello all . Sorry I'm not here much - I really can't keep up and have a rl. Hmm...maybe time to give up the rl then .
Will attempt to come back tonight for a proper catch up.

SpangleMaker · 22/09/2009 09:05

washing rescued!

massage we started a class last week. The tutor said the best time is when they're in the 'quiet alert' state It doesn't so much matter on the time of day (although I guess if there's wind it may be best not to do it just before they go to bed in case the wind wakes them up later? I dunno). She said an interesting thing about baths, that for some babies the being pulled out of warm water into the cold air & towelled down reminds them of the birth experience & so isn't the best time to do a massage! This was definitely the case with H.

She showed us an 'I love you' technique she showed us that could be good for wind: for the 'I' stroke down the right hand side of the abdomen; then say 'love' as you go up the LHS and across; and 'you' as you complete the stroke by going down the RHS again. Does that make any sense??

Jael · 22/09/2009 09:49

Morning

I don't know whether ayone's seen my new pics on FB, J and his sippy cup he loves it, he's been using it for just over a week now, with water in it, he hold it himself, basically gives himself a drink, it's so cute.

Spangle I can do Wednesday's if you like, but DD is in nursery 9-12.30, so I would have to meet you afterwards? Monday and Tuesday's are generally fine, and she goes to nursery 9-3.30 on Thursday and Friday's, so it's up to you Is H rolling from back onto tummy? J will do it if he's on his tummy, and he did a couple of back to tummy rolls a while ago, but they must have been flukes, cuz he won't do them again, you can see him really really trying, but he can't get himself over lol

Momino · 22/09/2009 10:49

Hi. just a quick post before i start the day (at 1040 ). trying to feed H who's having none of it, expressed a couple of ounces, dd1&2 parked in front of cbeebs, and me thoroughly of reggiee's RL. sigh.

pronunciation: i'm worried about this one as my american accent means i prob say so many names 'incorrectly' - but i don't mean to, it's just the way i pronounce certain sounds. in fact dd1 corrected me on how i said 'poh-coh-yoh' instead of with a more clipped o. that's how i say yoghurt and scone as well. i honestly never notice the difference unless someone points out to me. i also said 'Hairy' for 'Harry', until someone made fun of me, now i try to be careful. difficult job.

reebee, hoorah about the jobs!

off, to the shops with the girls. jael will check out photos next time i'm BF.

hope all having a good day.

FiByTheSea · 22/09/2009 11:04

found you

grumpy hope your mum is not driving you too crazy today

flippin G feeds in evening too. she generally has a feed then a nap then another feed/nap on an hourly cycle iyswim until about 9pm then she conks out properly. I dream feed her before i go to sleep and she sleeps through to about 7am. some evenings though she is wide awake all eve & she feeds chats and then conks out straight after at 10ish... not often does that though.

flippineck · 22/09/2009 11:24

Morning all!

Quiet morning here, the girls have both got stinking colds so I decided to stay at home. A is flat out now, she didn't sleep all that well last night, what with the wind and the snot (and yes, I think they are connected, though not always). When she wakes I'm going to try her with a bottle of EBM - only her second bottle ever! But I'm away for a whole day at the end of October so I need to get her a little bit used to it. And I need to express more too, bah.

Fi - I'm so glad you've said that about G's evening feed/sleep pattern! A is just like that and I've been trying to work out a) if it's normal! and b) how to change it. She's going to have to share a bedroom with DD1 soon but I really can't see it working right now.

Jael · 22/09/2009 11:59

Momino People say scone differently it's one of those strange words, I say it scone, rhyming with tone, whereas some people say it scone rhyming with gone...my other half takes the mickey out of me for several words I say, I say role-low-rolo chocoloates and the same for polo mints instead of row-low apparently

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 22/09/2009 13:13

Momi Tomayto or tomarto?

Mother still here, S waking up 4 times a night, exhaustion = severely grumpy old cow being horrible.

DH probably not here until next week now, been 2 and a bit weeks so far, I'm really pissed off now.

Will post later, just going to drink vat of coffee and think about lovely things like kittens (aka fabulous Keith)

Oh and DH is always busy when I ring him

OP posts:
pulapula · 22/09/2009 13:48

Grr i have only just calmed down from dealing with a cold call . I am usually very mild mannered, but i took offence when he phoned, I said straightaway "Sorry I don't have time- I'm making my lunch" and he said "it will only take a minute" and I hung up (as i usually do) and he proceeded to ring back (i cancelled the call) and ring again (I answered). He then was angry with me because I hung up on him (did i ask him to call me ) and I was angry with him as I had just resettled DS2 after his second half hour nap of the day and was trying to have my lunch and hang the washing before he woke again. I think i said that he would wake my baby if he kept calling and i hung up again. Then DS2 woke up . I'm getting angry again just thinking about it. Does he think i want to spend my precious 30 mins "me" time talking to him . And breathe.

Momino · 22/09/2009 14:18

OMG pula, can't believe that happened, can't believe he called back !! do you know where he was calling from (ie, could you somehow complain)?

very unsettled house here. we're trying to do 'whinge training' with dd1&2 so i'm supposed to ignore whingeing but it then turns into a tantrum so our house has been full of crying/yelling. plus Harper hasn't fed or napped well so far today so i have an overtired baby who can't decide what she wants so is either left crying in her bed or crying on the boob (trying to BF now).

i've also not been able to keep up with dishes so far as dishwasher not yet emptied. the worktop has now disappeared underneath porridge-clad bowls, tea mugs, empty tins, etc.

however, we have managed to fingerpaint!! . we now just need to make a birthday cake for the dog but that requires going to the shop for ingredients. we tried this morning but had 2 temper tantrums so had to turn back home. fingers crossed for this afternoon.

jael, we must have similar accents . i say scone, Rolo, etc like you as well. grumpy, i do say to-mar-to. can't stand tomaydo.

ok, shall go as Harper has calmed down in my lap and there are stacks of dishes to shift.

essenceofSES · 22/09/2009 16:05

Momino - you're accent is gorgeous and don't let anyone tell you otherwise

Pula - Grrrr!!! If I have nothing better to do I often just keep saying "why?" to the people who make those phonecalls. It really annoys them (although once the guy at the other end couldn't stop laughing!) Conversations generally go:
Caller: "Can I speak to Mrs D?"
Me: "Why?"
Caller: "I want to tell her about an offer we have on."
Me: "Why?"
Caller: "Well she may be interested."
Me: "Why?"
They often start to give up at this point!!

Gert2a · 22/09/2009 16:37

Afternoon ladies.

Mispronunciation of names - very annoying. When I meet someone with an unusual name, I get myself all worked up about pronouncing it right and not offending. I'm sure however that even though I do try hard I mispronounce a lot of things!

E has been weighed today and is 14lbs, she has gone from the 50th to just below the 25th centile. I know I shouldn't be bothered by this and shouldn't be worried (I know why she's not gaining so much, because all she wants to do is look at the world instead of feeding and gets distracted at every feed apart from through the night!), but I am bothered by it. Stupid graphs and charts. She's a happy, healthy, giggly baby. Stupid graphs and charts. She's a happy, healthy, giggly baby. Stupid graphs and charts. She's a happy, healthy, giggly baby.

Reebee congrats to DH on promotion and keeping job. Fantastic news.

pula am astounded at your cold caller. I would be just as angry. Ses what a great tactic to deal with cold callers, must try and remember that one, in fact I like it so much I'll put a post it with 'why' written on it by the phone.

Jael · 22/09/2009 16:38

Well I had a walk with DD to get J weighed, it poored down on us lol he'd put a teeny bit of weight on,but hes dropped down a percentile thing. I explained about him having his bedtime feed at 7-8pm and then having another 7oz at 1am and 4am, and my concerns with not wanting to start weaning him until 6months, she reassured me, I feel loads better, I spoke to a different HV today. She's reccomended as J is a couple of days off being 5 months old, trying him with plain baby rice, and just see how that goes, if he's ok with that, I should be able to hold off weaning him "properly" like the "reccomended guidelines" say you should until 6 months...I weaned DD at 4 months, but she was our first, she was a very hungry baby, and it was really just for the pure fact that I was excited about her trying new foods, at least I'm honest about it now. They changed the guidelines to 6 months...I wanted to stick to it, and unfortunately I can't I'm going to have to try him with some baby rice, am I wrong, because I'm really worrying?

JennsterFrogSaviour · 22/09/2009 17:22

Reebee Great news about your dh. Good luck with your boss about your request.

LadyHelen Is your dh's boss from Northern Ireland. In my head, I'm imagining an NIrish person pronouncing it like that....but I don't know.

EssenseofSes...are you training to be a 3 year old?

Jael If he's not putting weight on, even with all the extra milk feeds, then baby rice is unlikely to make him start putting weight on.

essenceofSES · 22/09/2009 17:28

Jennster - why??!

All those with weight worries. Please don't worry! I've been there and no it's easier said than done but centiles and charts really are the invention of the devil (IMHO!)
