dawntigga · 22/09/2009 13:22

Feier, this is a little beyond a GP IMO from what you are saying, so if possible I would get her an appointment with a paediatric dermatologist. But yes, you can use low dose topical steroid cream specially mixed for you with sterile vaseline on eczema for prolonged periods of time, it's not the same as the over the counter stuff at all. Ask your GP to take advice if she/he hasn't heard about this method of treatment - they could ring Dr Atherton's clinic at Great Ormond Street for advice if necessary.

Regarding the bandages, get some child limb size tubigrip bandages. Cut a piece that covers the whole arm or leg where the problem is. After her bath, put the cream on and then soak the bandage in warm water before wringing it out. Put the hot wet bandage onto her limb with the cream thickly applied underneath. Then get another identical bandage, keep it dry (i.e. don't rinse this one through) and put this over the hot wet one to protect her pyjamas. Then put her to bed like that. With older children it is OK to give Piriton if it all itches, but take advice before using Piriton on younger children.

For swimming, you just wrap cling film around the affected limb over and over again until it is well protected, so the chlorine doesn't get at it.

If you leave sore patches they just get huge. It is best to nip this in the bud. I know this from bitter experience.

BoffinMum · 22/09/2009 15:14

feier, just read the bit where you have taken her to A and E ... nag for a dermatologist!

Regarding fruit and veg in packets ... it's not a black and white issue, this actually saves a lot of food from damage, decay and infestation unlike the third world where a lot of unbagged food is lost that way. So unpackaged food is not necessarily greener food.

Guimauve · 22/09/2009 16:03

I do like to be able to feel my fruit.

And call me old-fashioned, but I also like a nice brown paper bag rather than the plastic ones you get for F&V in supermarkets. I realised I was turning into my grandmother when I started saving up the paper bags in a drawer for re-use Though actually they are good for piling your peelings into for compost.

Currently typing one-handed, lying on side in bed with baby asleep at breast. It's exhausting, I can tell you!

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 16:48

Well, back from Hospital. Paed took one look and said this is not eczema at all. Has never been. It's an infection, either bacterial or caused by a fungus. Took some swabs, and prescribed super strong AB plus anti-fungal cream. A bit at my first GP, but if this is true, then everything will clear up in a week or two. Yippee!

Now then, ABs say to give 4 times a day an hour before meals. How to do this with a bf child?

Guimauve · 22/09/2009 17:07

Excellent news Feier - short-term infection much better than long-term condition!

How often does H feed? What time is bedtime? Is she up for a night feed? Basically, the abx are absorbed better from empty stomach, so if you can aim to give approx 30 mins before a feed at roughly 6 hour intervals. But better taken on a full stomach than not at all so get them in however you can! I don't imagine plain old bm will affect absorption massively. Must ask our paed pharmacist at work!

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 17:13

H is up from 7am to 7pm. Feeds roughly at 7, 9.30, 12.30, 3.30, 5.30 and 7. Nights have been random the last couple of days, but used to be one feed at 4am recently. Given what a mess we just made with the first dose, with half of it landing on her t-shirt, I'd rather not give the stuff in the middle of the night. Do I have to? (Please say no)

Guimauve · 22/09/2009 18:40

No

Guimauve · 22/09/2009 18:43

I would try and do 7, 12, 5 and 10pm if possible. If waking her won't work, 7, 11, 3, and 7. Ideally doses should be spaced as far apart as possible, and in hosp they tend to get the poor babes up, I think, but one has to be realistic. Again, better doses go in a bit close together than all over the bedclothes and not in the mouth!

I am told (am assuming it is flucloxacillin?) that it is foul tasting though

dawntigga · 22/09/2009 19:06

moo it was for space - 6 boxes of comics takes up a fair amount of space!

KnowTheLittleManNeedsTheSpaceMoreTiggaxx

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 22/09/2009 19:39

Evening.

Feier really glad you got a doc who knows what they're talking about at last! Hope it all clears up really quickly now, you poor things having to slog on through with steroids and what not when they weren't doing any good.

Tigga am very impressed at you selling comics - my BIL has been nagged for about 15 years to get rid of his, or at least STOP BUYING ANY MORE but it isn't working!

bebemoo have you tried little greengrocers for fruit? Our local one has amazing melons, I've had them fresh in Italy and these are just as good, and the plums are fantastic too. Have no idea where he gets them from, I suspect dark satanic forces are at work. (Just realised that talking about our little greengrocer's melons and plums could be misinterpreted.....)

Guimauve I had that worry about the Storchenwiege too but then I figured that I'm knackering myself carrying him round on my hip anyway so a sling can only be an improvement!

And actually, it's amazingly good - because you spread the material over the curve of your shoulder it doesn't pull or tug downwards on your neck, and a lot of his weight rests on your hip because he's held very close and tight into the body. I can carry him for a really long time in it.

It's actually been a complete revelation, it's the simplest and most comfortable sling I've tried (I've tried the Kari Me - very good, but not this good, and a faff to climb into; the Ergo - really didn't like it, too complicated; the Baby Bjorn - oh my god that hurt my shoulders and neck!; the BabaSling - ok but a bit tuggy on the shoulder; and the Mei Tai - nice but no use for a nosy Orbit!)

Also it's really easy for DP to use as he can just pick it up and one tug on the end and it's the right size for him, no fiddling with straps or adjusting bits. He's a fan already.

So here's a question - anyone up for a trip to the Natural History Museum this weekend? I'm coming up with both boys as DP is working in London all weekend, so we are going to the museum on Saturday probably and would love to have a mini Fanjo Warrior meet up if anyone's around?

Gui hope H's weigh in goes well - did you mean to say '6 months in 26 weeks'? Cause that's quite a long time to wait!

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 19:41

That's the stuff Gui. H certainly wasn't amused and did a lovely 'I am going to be sick' impression.

I would have normally done 7, 11, 3, 7 simply because I wouldn't have known any better. Is the problem with timing them like this that they won't work as well when not given at regular intervals throughout the 24 hour period? Or is the problem a risk of overdosing if doses are too close together?

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 19:46

WFH I'd love to meet up but must go to a rowing regatta with DH on Saturday. Have you made any plans for Sunday yet? Or Friday?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 22/09/2009 20:09

Sadly Sunday we're probably lunching with one of DP's clients and I'm not coming up till Saturday morning as I have friends staying here until Saturday. We're around Sunday afternoon as we're staying Sunday night too, though, so could be a possibility?

Saturday would be best though, shame about the regatta or we could have nattered about weaning and recycling in person - always more fun.....

Guimauve · 22/09/2009 20:22

Feier - it's more that you end up with a 12-hour gap between doses so the concentration of drug in the body falls, rather than staying at a bacteria-killing level, so the more evenly spaced, the better. If you could make the morning dose earlier and the night dose later, that would be good, but... Risk of overdose is there but low; in more severe infections the dose could be doubled from what I imagine H is on, and it is sometimes given 6 x day. Plus, it is not terribly well absorbed. Obv risks are higher in tiny people with tiny doses!

WFH - at 26 weeks! Doh! I want a Storchenwiege ring now!
I may leave weighing another week, as one of my NCT buddies will be there next week and we can do lunch. It will be 6 weeks since I saw HV by then - do you think I'll get my wrists smacked?

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 20:28

She did put H on 5mls rather than the 2.5mls which apparently is the usual dose for this age. I think she thought the infection is pretty bad actually.

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 20:57

Enough of me and H now... did you know they are already discussing birth options on the Due April 2010 thread?!

Guimauve · 22/09/2009 21:14

Goodo - approve of proper doses!

hello all it feels like ages since i've posted

feier so glad h's skin is being sorted out but how horrible for you all to have been misdiagnosed. dh had it happen the other way (spent years applying canesten to eczema) so i guess it's relatively easily done.

jj poo to migraine

wfh really glad you like your storch - i have a storch wrap. however i must confess to being an utter ringsling dunce so very you're getting on so well with it

gui if the hv smacks your wrists smack her back.

tomorrow i start visiting prospective primary schools for ds1. first up is our probable first choice. five minutes from our house and so hugely oversubscribed i fear we won't get in am trying and failing not to get neurotic over this. in other news edmund spent about 30 mins in his cot this evening so i have cleared the conservatory of several tonnes of 'lovely models' (aka crap sellotaped to other crap, occasionally interspersed with vital paperwork and garnished with all the pens we've ever owned. dismembered and swathed in electrical tape.)
