mdvaza I'm still a goth, at weekends anyway :-p

No retrovirals now, they've stopped preventative measures in London and are doling out Tamiflu only if people develop symptoms now. Mostly cos it's gonna get a whole lot worse come winter.

corgi You should be able to get vaccinated if you're asthmatic.

Gabe rolled the other way yesterday, guess he's officially mobile now! We've also started doing 'Big Boy' time for DS1, he gets an extra 30 min up after Gabe goes to bed to be made a fuss of

lolianja · 02/07/2009 20:30

I'm really tempted to start Jimbo on solids. He's waking more in the night - he doesn't tend to cry, just make his little guinea pig noises and whinge a bit. And he's feeding a lot, he fed an obscene amount to begin with then settled at a bit less but he fed for just over an hour last night.

I'm apprehensive about giving him solids though as he's only 4 months. HV says not to for a while yet but my mum's all "oh we started you on solids at a similar age, I'm sure it'll be fine" etc. I feel he's ready but I've no way of knowing and don't want to do him any harm.

Wheelybug · 02/07/2009 20:48

thanks all - dd1 made her visit to her school which was great. She's much better - back to being cheeky and naughty so must be better

ellie - hope your mouth is better soon

slick - great sleeping by FB ! ().

grinning - second set of jabs were better here than first. First L was v. unsettled after them, second she was fine. We have the horrible third set in a couple of weeks.... I'm also taking dd1 for her preschool booster at same time. eek !

lau - scarey re swine flu etc. someone now has it at DH's work... (I too am asthmatic Grinning - I might take them up on a free flu jab this year !).

well done to gabe on his movement. We too have a babe on the move. She can go from back to front both ways and has now started front to back and today we got a row of rolls along the mat. She also pushes herself with her feet when on her front so she shunts herself along which is quite a sight to see. Yikes !

Slickbird · 02/07/2009 20:49

Aparently 30 degrees here today so there it is. It does get hot in scotland. it was hot but i didn't feel it was that hot - but then i'm a bit of a reptile. (not the scaley skin bit. Or the forked tongue although dh would argue....

Jolly & lol Yip, I will be starting him at 4months because I reckon he's well* ready for it. He sits there staring at our food and watching us eat which is all a sign and he's been doing that for ages. For the record when DD1 was a baby 8 years ago, it was 4 months we were told to start weaning. By the time I had DD1 it was 6. She didn't wait that long either. I personally think A LOT of babies are ready for 6 months and I think a lot of health professionals secretly believe this to be the case. I sometimes wonder if the rare few who develop allergies are all brought under the same safety umbrella by W.H.O just to cver themselves. Intersting that the manufacturers of baby rice etc still have on packets 'For 4 - 6 months'. I'm pretty sure if it were that much of a no-no they wouldn't be allowed.

Anyway, I'd go with gut instinct and if you are happy to start then, go for it, if not, I'm sure it'll do no harm to wait. I have also read tho, that it is really important to make sure they have started by 6 months as this is important for developing jaw muscles for speaking and chewing.

IMHO!!!!

Am v.pissed off. Have just spent an unexpected 550 quid on the car (new oil sump and gasket, new exhaust and new tires) and still the knocking noise is not fixed! Am so annoyed. The garage have agreed to try and fix what they think is now causing it, for free. Just as bloody well.
Not a cost I was expecting. There's always someone waiting to take your money....

No rolling yet for HB. Think he's too heavy!

Elsy · 03/07/2009 10:33

Loli I think I am going to start DD2 on solids at 4 months too. I didn't start DD1 until 6 months but she was absolutely tiny and showed no signs of being extra hungry. My HV said it is fine to start them from 18 weeks if you think they are ready for it. And if they don't react well you can just stop and start again in a few weeks.

Torrential rain here last night so was frantically running round the house at 2.30am closing all the windows. Then DD2 woke for feed at 3.30 and DD1 up at 6. Yawn...

Wheelybug · 03/07/2009 10:49

Me too Elsy - L had her best night ever - slept 7.30 to 5.30 . But I was up at 1 with dd2 and then again at 2.30 running around shutting windows.

As for solids - I'm going to do it when I think L is really ready. I'm hoping she'll last through our holiday (beginning of August) and then probably start when we get back when she will be 5 months. She was looking v. interested at DH's banana just now ! DD1 I weaned at 20 weeks, that was 4 years ago and although they said try and wait to 6 weeks, the HVs said anytime from 17 weeks.

Missmodular · 03/07/2009 11:33

I'm going to leave weaning as long as possible - I remember what a hassle it is pureeing foods and it's just another thing I have to pack if we're going out for any length of time! Melissa is showing no signs of wanting food yet - I offered her my ice lolly for a suck yesterday and she didn't seem that bothered. Although I might change my mind if she starts grabbing food out of my hand like DD1 did....

We're in lurgy house today. M has a horrid cold and cough and it looks like DD1's just come down with chicken pox. M's been so grizzly the last few days it wouldn't surprise me if she comes down with it too, poor thing.

laumiere · 03/07/2009 15:43

loli Try cooking a dessert apple and 3 dried apricots and pureeing that and giving it to him, (about a dessert spoon worth to start). If he can have a normal bowel movement afterwards he's fine on it. Gabe's on 3 meals a day now at 19w and is fine. It does dramatically cut down the feeding! I tend to prefer starting them on fruit first as it seems to cause less constipation/straining than baby rice!

We had interviews for a mother's help today to watch Gabe for 2-3 hours 2x a week so I can give DS1 some 1:1 attention. We put an ad in Gumtree, got about 35 applicants, shortlisted 3 and saw the 2nd today. Gabriel fell asleep on her, which I think is a good sign!

meep · 04/07/2009 18:48

I'm back!

Clear blue skies, endless white beaches, breakfast, lunch and dinner sitting on the patio and ..................................................................midgies evry bl**dy where

Yup - holiday in Scotland and the little b*ggers eat you alive!

Survived being away with 2 under 2 - but we were with my WHOLE family - so we actually had 5 little girls from 3mo to 9yo so it was just a whirlwind of pink fluffy mayhem.

Celebrated dd1's 2nd birthday when we were away and I have to say that it was the cutest thing ever - so innocent and so excited by everything.

Rosie was so so good - hardly cried, and only got upset if it got too rowdy for her and she was tired.

Haven't had time to catch up on all the posts - will be back once i've read through.

Hope everyone is okay and all the babies are well and behaving!

laumiere · 04/07/2009 19:38

meep aw, that sounds lovely! DS1 is really unbothered by birthdays/Christmas, he's all 'ooh a present, now put on Igglepiggle woman'. I can't wait til he enjoys birthdays!

Was out at London Pride with Gabe today, was lovely, though the sirens and samba confused him a bit!

lilymolly · 05/07/2009 10:18

Hi Girls..........long time no see, and sorry but I have not got the time to catch up on this thread, but promise to try and keep up and offer some advice and support where it is needed, apart from just coming on here and spouting about me

Have some news.....

Had a lovely holiday in ibiza with Matthew who was 13 weeks and dd who is 3 and half, and it was fab. Matthew breastfed alot (every 1 1/2 hours) during the day which ws hard, but slept and gurgled under a sunhade whilst we played with dd and sunned our selves!......it was about 35 degrees, so to get back to an english "heatwave" was easy peasy. Anyway back to news....... DP proposed and I am now the proud owner of a beautiful square diamond platimum ring

Matthew, been feeding a lot more during the night this week, and I am exhausted, do you think it may be the return back to england and out of a routine, or are your babies feeding more in the night because of the heat?

Really hope all is well

Will try and catch up on this thread over the next few days x

laumiere · 05/07/2009 10:40

lily can I be the first to offer congratulations? Oh and we had an adult size bouncy castle at our wedding, great ice-breaker!

lilymolly · 05/07/2009 12:08

Thanks laumiere

We have decided to wait a couple of years until Matthew is old enough to enjoy the wedding, and both him and dd are old enough to leave with grandparents

Bouncy castle sounds great though!

laumiere · 05/07/2009 18:39

Good plan lily, we got married when DS1 was 3 mo, I don't recommend planning a wedding when pregnant! We did leave him with GPs though, our honeymoon was in S Wales where DH's parents are, we're going to have a 'proper' honeymoon when the DSes are a bit bigger.

Gabriel keeps rolling accidentally in his sleep and getting stuck. It's cute but tiring :-p

meep · 05/07/2009 18:52

CONGRATULATIONS Lily and Mr Lily

still not had time to catch up on all your news but forgot to tell you the best outcome of our hols..........Rosie no longer has a gunky eye - hooray! Good old Mull sea air has sorted her out. Am very relieved!

Will hopefully catch up on everything tomorrow - for now I am out with my NCT Mums to celebrate our wee one turining two (while the said wee ones are tucked up in their beds!)

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 05/07/2009 19:28

Congrats Lily !! How lovely. Glad hte holiday went well too.

Welcome back meep glad you had a good holiday too and pleased the gunky eye is sorted.

What to report here - our sleep has once more gone to pot. We went out last night to a party () but it was a sensible-ish drinks party and we were home in bed by midnight as I was then up at 1.30, 4.30, 7.30...

L v. active now - can roll and push herself across the room. Yikes.

Wheelybug · 05/07/2009 19:29

ooh and I got my first pushchair flat tyre today. Have been v. pleased with the three wheeler my bro passed down to me but not quite sure what I'm going to do now as we can't seem to mend the puncture. Oops.

Yarnie · 05/07/2009 19:38

Congratulations, Lily! DP proposed just before I got pregnant. We were meant to be getting married this September, but somehow it's slipped through the net .

Meep Very glad to hear the gunky eye has gone. Spike also has one - did you get any advice about what to do about it?

Also - disaster! We have not given Spike a bottle for ages and now he won't take one. Has anyone ridden out that particular problem?

Elsy · 06/07/2009 11:06

Congratulations, Lily. I got married when 4 months pregnant with DD1. It was a very small wedding as we planned it in a few weeks, but that was what I wanted anyway.

Wheely Sorry to hear about your bad nights. Our evenings are back to 2 hour colic crying jags so you have my sympathy. It's so frustrating when you think you're out of the woods and it all begins again...

Yarnie Had exactly the same problem. DD2 took a bottle for a whole week - v. exciting for me as DD1 never did. But now she won't have it anywhere near her. Oh well.

megzyboo · 06/07/2009 11:36

Hi sorry, went to stay with mum for a few nights just to get a break from dp. Is all this arguing just a stage related to the little ones age or are we really just not getting on any more? feel like because I'm the one who wanted a baby the most I'm being left to do everything while he gets to go out and live the same life as before.

yarnie - I had the same problem and tried so many different teats it cost a fortune. then get a MAM bottle from mothercare for £3.50, it came with the right size teat too (unlike other stupid bottles you have to buy then buy a bigger teat). Its the only one I could get her to allow in her mouth. was a crying match at first but been substituting her dinner feed with it for a couple of weeks now and (mostly) takes it fine.

also been having troubles with baby sleeping in the heat, been up till 12 trying to get her down. although had a miracle 10pm - 8.30 lastnight. plenty milk to express this morning!! not had less supply in heat but bub been feeding more purely for hydration. has anyone else been giving bottles of water?? HV said she might need fed more in heat but never mentioned water. MIL was horrified that I wasn't giving her water and suggested warmed water with a little sugar. She isnt showing any signs of dehydration so I never tried, not that I think she'd even take it. ( I certainly wouldn't put sugar in it)

looking to go camping at the end of the week if the weathers not too hot- or cold. anyone had a three month old camping?

jollyjoanne · 06/07/2009 11:41

Hello again Lily and Meep. Glad you both had good holidays.

Congrats on the marriage proposal Mr and Mrs Lily!

Me and DH got married in the Empire State building, spent 5 day in NY and then 5 days in Vegas. It was fantastic and we had a great time. Then we had a huge party when we came home, I'd definitely do it again.

Did anyone else have problems with mumsnet over the weekend? I did try to post on Sat but the puter was having none of it.

We are back to waking during the night - fortunately mostly only once around 4am ish. But today we have tried some baby rice with our 10.30am feed didn't actually seem to eat much as most of it went down her chin but I am hoping it will help to fill her a little. Mae has taken to eating more frequently during the day too and is shoving everything in her mouth and licking everything so I think she is getting very curious about food.

Mae had a funny patch with her bottle, so we changed the bottle and then just gave it to her with nothing in for a while so she could suck it like a dummy. Then we started putting breast milk in and then eventually we used a differnt formula. It seemed to work becos she is back to drinking from the bottle fine, although still tonnes of it goes down her chin.

mdavza · 06/07/2009 13:35

Hiyall, hope the w/end was nice! Congratulations on engagement, Lily! I still love being married!
That saying, megzyboo, we had a long argument Sat night, same old story, me feeling he doesn't do enough with ben, him feeling nothing he does is good enough, etc. Sigh. We did make up but I feel as if we're missing each other somewhere. Although we both decided to have a baby, I was def more keen than him( due to tick-tock bio clock) but he knows better than to use yhat in an argument! A problem is that he's trying to renovate rooms before in-laws come, and he's working so hard but limited due to baby napping...and then I feel guilty for expecting him to be more involved with lo, aaaargghhhg!!!!

jolly. Lb did the same, he took only a v little bit of baby rice, but now, 2 weeks later, he opens his mouth for each spoonful and complains if I'm not quick enough! They catch on prerty quick.

elsy, wheely. Sorry about bad nights, mine is still ok, touch wood!! There is a thread under sleep for los that start regressing from 4 months, scary reading, it seems to have to do with all the developmental changes, and those who ebf seem to be suffering more- too nosy to eat much during the day.

Lb's poop is back to normal, he took some camomile and it worked well. He is so tall, almost too big already for 4-6 mo clothes, starting to grab things and gets v frustrated somtimes if it doesn't immediately end up in his mouth. He is spinning around if you put him on his back, and can roll himself from front to back. Bright and bushy tailed! Our next challenge is that we want to go out to dinner at my brother's, gulp. Will be the first time that he baths and goes to sleep somewhere else, bigger gulp. What have been other's experiences?

megzy. We also want to go camping soon, pls keep me posted.

Yarnie · 06/07/2009 14:51

It's exciting to hear about people's new experiences with weaning. I am very keen to introduce Spike to food, but I am going to do my best to hold out until he's 6 months - if he'll let me. He's a big boy (7.1 kilos at just over 15 weeks), so we'll have to see. I am think I am going to give baby led weaning a try, as DP and I are massive foodies and like the idea of him having non-pureed food. Is anyone else thinking of giving it a go?

Thanks for the bottle tip, Megzy. I have heard the MAM bottles recommended elsewhere and I like their soothers, so I might give it a go. Tonight I am going to try him on his regular Dr Brown's bottle and see if reverting to the level 1 teat will make any difference. It will be a shame if my massive store of EBM in the freezer goes to waste .

meep · 06/07/2009 15:42

I weaned dd1 at bang on 6mo - mostly because I wanted her to have had solids before she started solids at 7mo. TBH I reckon she could have waited a month or so as milk seemed to be enough.

I hated the weaning stage.....pureeing, not pureeing, BLW, gagging, food refusal, goo, mess - ugh !

Aaaagh - just settling down to post and Rosie has started meeping upstairs - will be back later!

OP posts:
lizziemun · 06/07/2009 17:01

Personly i'm leaving weaning as long as i can as like Meep i hate weaning.

With dd1 i did puree's as i hadn't heard about BLW. Weaned at 20wks as per the guide lines then. And she hated, and took ages to eat proper food (no lumps until after 12mths) and is now a fussy eater.

DD2 weaned herself (def BLW) at 19wks as she would not drink milk. And now eat everything. We are yet to find something she doesn't like.
