Thought I'd start us up a post-natal thread for the new mummies of March 09 (or thereabout!)

meep congratulations on your beautiful new baby, adorable picture! I am also sorry for giving the impression that spinals don't hurt!

Regarding slings I have been using my wilkinet which DS loves but after half an hour or so my stomach wound hurts, so I don't think this is the ideal sling after recent c section.

twocutedarlings · 01/04/2009 18:29

meep Rosie is stunning!!, well done! its great to see you back. We have the same taste in name btw, DD1 is Rosie!!

As regards to the sore nips, is it painfull for the whole feed or just the first few minutes?

RE nipple shields, i BF DD1 for the first 4mths using them, i had very flat nips and latching her on was a nightmare it, i went on to exclusively BF her till she was 14mth old so using them certainly didnt effect my supply.

Slickbird · 01/04/2009 19:00

Hey Twocute - Yes, I thinnk it depends on the baby/nipple/sooking factor!

Coincidence that you and Meep both named your DD's Rosie. That was my last name til I got married. Any more Rosie's out there??

Elsy · 01/04/2009 19:18

Wheely - I had the same problem with weight gain with DD1. I just fed on one side to start with and as soon as I switched to two she did put on more. She was really slow to gain though until she went on to solids at 6 months. I really stressed about it at the time, but looking back it's obvious she is just a petite girl. She's totally healthy but just small - had to laugh when her adult height was predicted as 5ft3 as I am nearly 6 ft! Different story with DD2 - she's huge (98th centile where DD1 has always been on the 2nd). They are going to look so different.

grinningbee · 01/04/2009 19:23

Hello!

I'm not coming in just yet, but wanted to ask a question if I may? First one to answer gets a blueberry muffin!

Let's talk contractions

Do proper ones feel anything like this - definite start and finish, regular intervals, bump goes really tight and have lower back back pain together with really strong period type pain.

Please tell me it is! They're currently about every 20 minutes.

What a way to spend the evening of your wedding anniversary!

Ta in advance, and hope to join you all properly soon...

Wheelybug · 01/04/2009 20:14

grinning - despite having 2 babies i've never had a proper contraction so can't advise. Souns promising though so good luck !!

Elsy - /its funny you say that DH is 5 ft7 and weighs 9 stone on a heavy day, DD1 is 4 and only just hitting 15 kg despite eating like horse. I too am only 5 ft although do have an ability to puton weight. DD1 certainly appears to be DH and DD1's build so i don't expect her to be a heavy one.

Have been religiously using both sides today - can anyone advise what thrush looks like, DD has a funny patch omn the roof of her mouth and i did have IV followed by oral antibiotics during/post birth.....

Wheelybug · 01/04/2009 20:15

oh yes and i tried dd in the wilkinet twice this pm and she screamed blue murder. I might try and hire a close sling to see if she prefers this !

twocutedarlings · 01/04/2009 20:50

grinningbee god YES they sound like like contractions!! !!

slick/meek my new ikkle DS is Alex lol, meek just has outstanding taste in names! should also say that DD2 is called Lily (yes i have 2 little flowers)i kinf of feel like i am leaving her out

twocutedarlings · 01/04/2009 20:51

opps sorry grinningbee good luck shall be thinking of you, keep us posted!!

grinningbee · 01/04/2009 20:58

Thanks ladies!

Just had a very strong one while eating my tea...

I wonder if I can get the tiramisu in without dropping it when the next one hits

It all started about 3pm at about 40 minutes apart, so I hope this is all going somewhere.

jollyjoanne · 01/04/2009 21:00

Grinning if you are still around sounds like contractions to me too. Mine deinfintely felt more like period pains and to start with a hot water bottle on my back was really helping, as did the TENs machine as they got stronger. Not that I really realised they were contractions at the time.

Slickbird · 01/04/2009 21:01

Grinning - Sounds like the business to me! Good luck darlin! xx

grinningbee · 01/04/2009 21:11

Bless your hearts!

Ok. Anyone want a guess at when it'll happen? Ctx are still about 20 mins apart at the mo and are getting more painfull.

Go on, take my mind off it!

twocutedarlings · 01/04/2009 21:22

I think some time tomorrow morning

If i was you i would be up on my feet and keeping very active, eating pineapple, having sex while using a breast pump!! that should kick things off good and proper!! and if that doesnt work.........well think of the memories LOL .

However the more sensible advice would be to try and get some rest, eat and drink plenty and reserve you energy .

How are you feeling? you must be so excited!! just think by this time tomorrow you could well have you LO in your arms..........shite there i go again all mushy!!

jollyjoanne · 01/04/2009 21:23

We seemed to have had both ends of the spectrum on our thread - from Boobz's marathon to well what seems like loads of very fast labours.

Mine were probably about 20 mins apart at about 9pm ish but once my waters broke at about 10.30 pm ish they got much closer together and I was fully dilated and ready to go by 1.30am and Mae was born at 4am and would have been sooner if she wasn't stuck.

jollyjoanne · 01/04/2009 21:26

Definitely start finding the positions that are comfy for you, so you are ready for later. Personally I found a hot water bottle useful and then sitting on the toilet (due to the coldness of the cistern) for the contractions useful not sure why the temperature thing helped but it did.

Loving the picture in my head now twocute!

I feel ok actually. Not sure dh is though

We're just sitting on the sofa watching football, while our two 14 year old cats are conked out in total denial of how their little furry lives will change very soon!

meep · 01/04/2009 21:37

grinning sounds like you may be about to go for it - how exciting - go girl!

twocute if we'd had a boy he would have been Alex/Alexander and dd1 is Emily (nearly Lily - we contemplated that for dd2 but thought they were too similar!) - so we both have outstanding taste in names!

slick I don't know any other Rosies of baby/toddler age - and only one adult Rosie. The adult Rosie said that she now has 4 babies named after her so it must be getting popular again!

twocute most of my pain is during the latch on (think toe curling pain at times) - but if I get a good latch then it dulls away. However if she slips a bit it can be excruciating. She also has a bad nipple nibbling habit - the bf clinic said it is probably because my milk flows really fast (poor wee thing often gags!) so she nibbles/pinches my nipple to stem the flow - ouch. All I can do is de-latch her and put her on again.

Am on nipple shields tonight to give myself a bit of a break. At the moment my supply is pretty good so I'm not too worried about that.

Had a wee cry when I thought I was bleeding from a crack but it seems to have healed. My dh got all worried about me and suggested a bottle - but I don't want to introduce bottles yet. I am taking each day as it comes but am now aiming for 2 weeks of boob milk. If I can get to 4 weeks I will be amazed and will be happy to introduce a formula/ebm bottle feed so that dh can get involved too (and I can get some more sleep) but if that time comes before 4 weeks then so be it.

Am currently camped in the spare room with Rosie while dh is upstairs with Emily. It seems to have cured Emily of her night wakings - though she was really hard to settle tonight. Probably because she had both me and Rosie with her for bedtime milk and stories and she just wanted me all to herself

twocutedarlings · 01/04/2009 21:39

Watching football!! booooooo!!, i am sick to death of the bloody thing am missing grand designs!!

Wheelybug · 01/04/2009 21:53

Ooh grinningbee - how exciting !!

Meep - nipple condition sounds very similar here. ALso your dh sounds like mine - v. concerned and offering formula feeds. Bless 'em, must be hard to watch us going through difficulties with it when they can't help.

Right am off to bed shortly to see how tonight goes. DD has been feeding virtually all evening so you would hope it leads to a settled night.......
Am going to try the swapping sides thing tonight and hopefully not use the formula top up but we'll see how near the end of my tether I get .

Slickbird · 01/04/2009 22:36

Hey - I've FINALLY joined the modern world, downloaded photos to computer and stuck one of Nicholas here which I'll keep on for a wee while.

grinningbee · 01/04/2009 23:18

Bugger.

Ctx have gone all over the place since eating tea, but are increasingly painful. Last few were 17, 31, 18 & 41 mins apart.

I'm off to bed now, so I'll catch up with you all in the morning.

Nighty night.

laumiere · 02/04/2009 09:47

Oh, think I mentioned before but if anyone has painful stitches/ bruised bum, try sitting on your breastfeeding cushion (Boots do an inflatable one for £10). If you sit with the two ends towards the back of the sofa and the bend at the front, all the weight is off your sore bits!

My coccyx is almost healed after 6 weeks and £60 worth of osteopathy, if you're in London I'd really recommend the British School of Osteopathy for a quick back health check (they do a baby clinic too).

We're off to Wales with the chicks this weekend for a wedding, wish us luck!

Yarnie · 02/04/2009 13:44

Oh, Grinning - that all sounded promising! Hope you have your LO in your arms now!

I have finally managed to post a couple of pictures of Spike. I could look at him all day, but I need to go and complete his nursery registration forms (yes, it's that competitive here).

Meep You have all my sympathy. I am all too familiar with the pain. I find Kamillosan more soothing than Lansinoh if you haven't tried it. GP can prescribe or Boots has it. My breast misery also continues. After the cracked nipples and mastitis, I am now concerned we may have thrush (not uncommon, I imagine, following cracked nipples and a course of anti-bs). I have some pain in the breast after feeding. I may also have seen some white spots in Spike's mouth, but I'm not sure. He doesn't open wide very often and it could have been milk. Are there any other signs I should look out for?

jollyjoanne · 02/04/2009 17:14

Oooh sorry to those having nipple pain, but sadly no advice as no experience of this yet.

Yarnie, Spike looks so cute. Sadly no idea about thrush either, the white mouth is the only thing people seem to mention.

Slick, love the photos too.

I am feeling tired but cheerier today. Mae has been registered so I now have a certificate to confirm that she is here. And the midwife has just been and Mae has put on another 7oz so she now weighs 7lb 8oz at last back above her birth weight so we have now finally been signed off! Woo Hoo!

But I do have a slight gripe - has anyone found nappies where the poo doesn't escape out of the legs or over the top at the back. I am getting slightly fed up of having to wash babygros with poo all in the legs! Or is my baby's poo just extra runny or something?
