Thought I'd start us up a post-natal thread for the new mummies of March 09 (or thereabout!)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
corgikelly · 20/04/2009 23:51

Hi Kezzabell - as a brand-new mum, I can definitely vouch for the feeling of relief the thread provides, along the lines of "I'm NOT crazy -- hallelujah!" So welcome, and take full advantage.

fearless, no, you didn't sound flippant at all -- I totally agree that matter-of-factness is hugely important and will eventually, I hope, communicate itself to Rhys. It'll just take us a while to get there (this may be because I'm conflating this frame of mind with a more tactical controlled crying approach, a la laumiere, which, I agree, is probably best not tried before 6 weeks or so).

lula, if it helps, you're definitely not alone in feeling blue at the prospect of receiving an Honorary Lifetime Jigger Award. I'm taking solace from the fact that everyone (on this thread, in real life, etc) I know insists that nothing about babies is truly endless, and that everything is a phase and bound to change at some point. Now if only we could control when and how that change comes (I'm a charter member of the control freak club, too, fearless!). joanne, loving the fact that Mae gets bored and lets you know about it. Rhys shares most of her physical vocab, but not that one -- not yet, anyway!

lizziemun · 21/04/2009 06:50

corgi

I know that feeling (and it doesn't get any better even when on dc 3 .)

I also find that on days like that, there will be a accident on the M1 and dh will not get in untill after i've struggled and got the girls bathed and put to bed.

These days are enough to drive me to drink or would be if i did drink.

lilymolly · 21/04/2009 08:38

ok so got the results back from gps

No bacterial or Thrush infection in Matthew
No Thrush in me either

So Matthew has had a week of antibiotics for nothing

His bum is still very very sore and red raw, and breast feeding is still agonising...........so we are pressing on.

I am so Passionite about bf that even though it is painful we are carrying on regardless.

For those whose babies are feeding alot, have you tried a dummy?

It never effected either ds, or dd bf and it helped them settle when they where wanting to suck.

I can also recommend swaddling to those who are having trouble with sleep.

Matthew and dd go to bed at about 7.30pm, and he wakes every 3 hours until we get up at 7am so I guess I am really lucky

Still tired feeding every 3 hours but its def bearable.

dd starts nursery tommorrow, and we are going for an visit this afternoon, so cue loads of tears at this house tommorrow afternoon!

Love to everyone x

What genius decided it would be a good idea to start potty training DD with a 3 and a bit week old baby around? Oh yes, that would be me... . Pure madness. On the plus side the potty training is going well...

Sorry for all those having probs with breast feeding. I'm sure so much depends on the baby. I know that the experts say all babies can breastfeed, but i'm not convinced that they all find it easy. DD was nigh on impossible, DS is a doddle. And it's not like my boobs have changed (well, ok, they're a bit saggier but i'm sure that there's not that much difference...).

Hope you are all making the most of this gorgeous weather. I have given up housework and am focusing on lounging in the sun and going for nice walks

Wheelybug · 21/04/2009 13:23

lily - sorry to hear about the pointless a/bs and Kind of sorry there wasn't an obvious problem (IYSWIM). I think things here are definitely less painful so maybe it'll just take time. Hope you can bear it and I hope nursery went ok for dd.

I had a slight breakthrough last night - at 5 am I stuck Lara's dummy in and she kept it in (have been avoiding using it at night as when she loses it all hell breaks loose so wasn't helping). I also laid down on the bed right by her crib in the hope she could see me and she did settle. Both DH and DD1 thought it was a bit strange when they found me upside down in the morning . Its good to know we're not alone anyway, although sorry some of you are in the same boat.

However, I found dd1's baby book just now and had recorded her sleeping and she slept 10- 6 at 8 weeks . And was sleeping 8 till 8 at 14 weeks. It didn't last though I have to say - as soon as she started teething she was terrible. But is now pretty good. I guess it will just take Lara a bit longer (hopefully not too much though ).

Ellie - I think you're right regarding different babies - dd1 wouldn't latch at all, Lara took to it no probs.

Enjoy the sunshine everyone ! DD1 has her first playdate since Lara's come along and they need a bit of attention....

Ellie respect to you you madwoman! I have put on hold all thoughts of potty training (mind you dd1 seems totally against it - if I ask her if she's done a poo she says "nope poo" just to avoid getting her nappy changed), moving into a big bed or anything else to disrupt the stus quo until Rosie is sleeping for longer stretches and we have some sort of routine!

I keep swithering about using a dummy. Rosie definitely uses her bottle to suck herself to sleep at times. And dummies are now recommended to help against SIDS. I just don't want to do battle with dummy removal in the future!

wheely I defeinitely think they can see us now - if I come into Rosie's view she stops and stares.

Well I got out and about today - slinged it down to the baby clinic and she's putting on weight fine. But I am now exhausted from the walk. Of course Rosie wouldn't sleep when we got back and I hadn't eaten so I stuffed some food down and let her cry in her moses basket for 5 mins - and guess what - after a quick cuddle she is now asleep - whoo hoo.

So - do I tackle some more housework - or stay here on MN.............

lilymolly · 21/04/2009 14:44

meep

I only allowed dd to have dummy for sleep (naps and bedtime) and when she was upset/ill.

We gave it to "SANTA" just before her 3rd birthday and we had no issues at all.

Been back to GPs about matthews bottom and they swabbed it again and now given me thrush cream and hydrocortizone cream so fingers crossed that will work!

Breastfeeding counsiller been out again and still has no real advice bless her, as I am doing everything correct, just need to toughen the old nips!

3cutedarlings · 21/04/2009 19:53

I am still melting , i just need to get him to smile on demand so that i can get some piccys.

meep · 21/04/2009 21:05

aw 3cute you lucky thing - sounds adorable!

lily we got a smile at 3 weeks - a definite up curling of mouth corners in response to me grinning like an idot at Rpise. Only once though - not repeated - I can't wait for smiles and giggles!

fearless it must be a Scoittish word - used all the time up here

laumiere · 22/04/2009 00:39

I wish that Gabriel would take a dummy, but he hates them, and has been refusing bottles too. We've swapped to the Tommee Tippee 'Closer to nature' ones which seem to help with my breast-obsessed boy!

Slickbird · 22/04/2009 10:28

I literally don't have time to EVER post and I don't know how you all manage it!!

I can't even read all the posts over the last few days but I did notice Loljiana (Sp??) OMG!! Congratulations. But, er...blimey!

Meep A really good way to clear up sticky eye is cooled camomile tea on cotton wool. Works a treat. Well, it has for us.

Well, just quickly, Fat Boab continues to live up to his name - he has put on 45 ounces, yes, that's 45 ounces in two and a half weeks. That's 2.5 ounces a day. I mean, WTF?? When is that boy going to slow down. And just for good measure, he has just fed every two hours for the last 24 hours just to enhance his growth spurt criteria. I really don't think I can afford him at this rate... And we are still getting no sleep as the little guzzler is up munching all night too. And he is awake most of the day. Quite frankly, I think he is starting to take the piss....

On a plus point, the HV said yesterday that 'he is the best baby I've seen in ages' (she probably says that to all the babies) for alertness and weight and development etc. So he bloody should be with all that feeding!

Better go. Oh for some sleep.

Hope you're all doing well and will get a chance to read all your posts properly.

I didn't realise swithering was a Scottish word. I use it too. Because I'm Scottish, I guess.

meep · 22/04/2009 10:36

lol slick - I had no idea it was a Scottish word until I googled it!

I am only able to post if dd1 isn't here - if she is then my life is a non-stop toddler shrieking whirlwind (mostly trying to stop her running in to see a sleeping "Loshie* and shrieking so loudly into the moses basket that the wee soul startles herself right out of her blankets!)

Have put camomile tea on my shopping list.

How much is 45 ounces in lbs? Rosie has put on half a pound in 2 weeks - how does that compare to Boab?

Need to sort out Rosie's sleep patterns - she seems to go for a long long sleep at about 6pm - a good 4 or 5 hours. But I'm running around dealing with dd1 so can't use it to my own advantage and sleep while she sleeps.

This morning she woke at 5am, had a bottle, slept for an hour and I've only just got her down after another 2 bottles - what is that all about? Is cluster feeding not meant to happen at night ?

3cutedarlings · 22/04/2009 10:49

Meep Alex will cluster feed whenever!! he is feeding every 2 hours atm but he only feeds for around 10mins ive already fed him 3 times since 6am!!. Oh and i think there are 14oz to a pound . I dont think i have ever heard of a weight gain that big slick , i have to say your post was bloody hilarious!! (apart from the lack of sleep...........the little bugger).

Slickbird · 22/04/2009 10:50

Hey Meep - That's 2lb and 8.1oz I believe! OMG! When you put it like that!! There's 16 oz in a pound.

My DD2 is either calling DS "Baybeee!" or "Nnnnick!" She's very sweet with him, but I don't trust her for a second. You never know when that stroking hand will become a smacking patting hand!

I wish I could drop one of them off to a nursery for bit. Life would be easier then!

Oh, he must have heard me sit down. He's crying. Oh shit. That's bloody both of them awake. That lasted a whole half hour. Which one first? Sod it, I leave them cry and go to the pub....

meep · 22/04/2009 11:04

I'll meet you there slick............

3cutedarlings · 22/04/2009 11:36

oh don't ......... sigh .........bottle glass of white wine .......... sun ....... nothing to rush home for ..... guaranteed long lie the next day........look what you've started slick!

jollyjoanne · 22/04/2009 13:45

3cute - how fantastic - I can't wait till Mae can giggle.

Slick - goodness gracious - he must be huge 45oz, much respect to you and Boab!

Mae has been for her 6 week check today she had put on nearly 2lb since her last weigh in 3 weeks ago. She now weighs 9lb 6oz, which still a little smaller than average. But her height is normal and her head circumference was a little bigger than normal - she must look like a stick man.

Slickbird · 22/04/2009 13:49

See you all there!!

I know. I was just lamenting last night how I miss our friends that we used to see on a regular basis and as a crowd. And just going to the pub and being sociable. Instead of an exhausted, aching mother of 3 with grey hairs and wrinkles increasing three fold with every child born!! Who's idea now of a 'good night' is getting to bed early after a crippling day chipping away at the coalface of motherhood with a good book and hoping to hell she get more than 3 hours sleep.... God, if I'd known in my 20's what I know now.

Still, it was ever thus and I still wouldn't swap the pesky rascals for anything.
