Hello ladies.

Pull up a chair, grab a biscuit and lets start talking about puree vs blw and sleep deprivation

oh becaroo you must be worried, but I agree with pacita that babies are soo relaxed that they seem to just bounce. I hope that he's |OK

at cardboard as a weaning food, I need to be more careful to watch what she grabs when I'm mumsnetting. No ill effects so far though

DebiTheScot · 15/03/2009 15:39

ninja we had lunch outside today and ds2 was in the bumbo on the grass. He wasn't nearly as interested in his cream cheese on toast as he was in the grass which he kept trying to eat! The BLW book says to let them choose what to eat so maybe I was being a bad mummy by taking it off him

Had a busy day yest and now suffering from it today! We went looking for a car to buy in the morning then went to the rugby (amazing 60-8 win for the Quins so that was brilliant (apart from me falling over a wall and bruising my bum)) then me and dh went to an evening wedding reception. Then ds2 woke about 2 mins before we got home at midnight then again at 3, 5.30 then was up for the day at 6.45. DH fell asleep in church this morning

DebiTheScot · 15/03/2009 15:41

oh and starlight couldn't BS eat the same foods as your ds if you think what you eat isn't healthy enough?

DebiTheScot · 15/03/2009 15:45

just bought a doidy cup off ebay. £3.65 inc delivery. Bargain.

potxola · 15/03/2009 16:17

Pacita I just want to make you feel better about Diego: When Niko, ds, was a baby did have eczema and we went to the clinic at the hospital many times and gave him 3 different sort of eczema creams, some of them very strong and I could only use a tiny bit. Some of them made it worse and I remember feeling very upset and useless because I could not do any thing about it. I took him swimming twice, I remember it very well, because it got worse with the water in the pool.
I used to bath him every day with the usual baby soaps and gels, but I started to see the difference when I started to use "Simple" products and Epaderm to bath him and I stop bathing him every day.
Every now and then he has some red patches, but as soon as I see them I put the eczema cream and it goes away. Last time was about 6 months ago.
So, please, keep on trying and insist of changing creams to the doctor. It is a question of finding the right treatment. You are a great mum and it is normal that you worry.

potxola · 15/03/2009 16:33

DebiTheScot Well grass is green, but I wouln't allow it either.
I just realised I bough a doidy cup for ds and NEVER used it, so I must try it with Lorea. £3.65 it IS a bargain!!

I forgot what BLW was I looked it up. I have given Lorea melon and kiwi to try and seems to like it.
I am finding difficult to find the time and energy to cook 2 different things for my children, so I am trying to give them the same every now and them. Today I cooked red lentils, carrots onions potatoes with cheese. Red lentils are a good source of onion, which reminds me , are you giving your BF babies extra vitamins A,C and D. I remember being told to give them to my ds when he was 6 months. I also remember adding orange juice in water when he was having his protein meal, because it helps with the absorcion of iron....... I can believe I remember all that
Anyway, are you doing the vitamine thing? If you are giving them formula, you don't neeed to do it.
Becaroo It will happen to most of us and I could have happened to me many times+I have left her on the sofa for an instant while I get a toy or help her brother. I know I should't

digitalgirl · 15/03/2009 17:00

hopefully glad your night wasn't too bad. I checked with DH and he said the trick is to make the porridge really thick before frying/griddling.

pacita sorry to hear Diegos exczema has flared up, hopefully it's just a short phase.

Well last night we decided that seeing as A has gone over a week without the 3am feed that I would sleep in his room and DH could spend the night resettling him when he woke. My first ever full nights sleep since about May/June last year. I'm pleased to announce that it was a success! A had woken earlier than usual after his bedtime feed, 9pm and wouldn't resettle without a feed (which is very unlike him at that time of night). I went to bed at 11pm and apparently A didn't wake up till 2 and was quickly resettled he then woke at 3 for an hour when DH eventually picked him up. Then he didn't wake till 7:15 when he was brought to me for a feed. A definite improvement for A who went a record breaking 10 hours between feeds (and seems to be bringing his midnight forward) and a wonderful nights sleep for me.

Hopefully · 15/03/2009 19:33

DG congrats on your wonderful night's sleep!

We have just had the most vile poo explosion (last one was last monday). At least the scary weaning poos won't phase me at all - we've had totally solid, disgusting smelling poos for months! With a bit of luck it'll also mean a better night tonight.
Going to buy some syrup of figs tomorrow and start putting a drop in his water for a couple of drinks a day. Don't really want to have him on a long term lactulose dose, so hoping this will improve things as a first step.

TooMuchTV · 15/03/2009 21:27

Hopefully - when dd got constipated I soaked some prunes in boiling water then pureed with a little of the water - I froze in little cubes then defrosted and mixed in with apple or pear as needed. Worked like magic

Pacita · 15/03/2009 21:47

Thanks all for the kind words. I am wishing and hoping that D's eczema is the kind that goes away in childhood...

DG I am dead impressed by your full nights sleep. I have forgotten what it feels like and can't but dream. I think I need to wait a bit longer to try that kind of thing because Diego seems genuinely hungry at his night feed. However, if he could NOT wake up before 7 both his dad and I would be most grateful.

We have been out and about all day in the sunshine. Everything seems to be blooming and I reckon this spring will simply explode from one day to the next because it's come later after a cold winter. I'm really looking forward to lying about in the grass with DS.

Weaning news: had roast dinner and gave Diego a boiled carrot. He grabbed it, looked at it with utter disgust, then let it slide off his hand to the floor with contempt and repugnance. According to the BLW book this means he's not ready, I reckon.

plusonemore · 16/03/2009 06:25

Pacita you might want to try this for a totally natural way to treat excema, I have used it on ds1 and it worked brilliantly (although his skin is not too bad)

ds2 seems better from his nasty throat thing, although now has a horrible cough which I blame for him waking at 12, 2.30 and 5. And just when I needed a really good nights sleep! Went out Sat night with the girls and got rather drunk, spent yesterday recovering.

Hopefully · 16/03/2009 07:58

Poor you Pacita and the rest of you dealing with ecxema. I'm so glad that's one thing we've got away without.

DG will attempt thicker porridge. Seriously, you should have seen the blackened, yet still runny, creation I produced!

Have decided to be naughty and give T some water/fig syrup combo in his bottle, as he is so unimpressed with his tommee tippee cup. Going to continue to let him play with it at every meal, but think I will make sure he has a couple of decent drinks from the bottle as well - just can't take the risk of him getting any more dehydrated than he currently is, given the poo situation!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/03/2009 08:22

Hopefully - how about a doidy cup, or the tommee tippe without the lid? You have to keep trying as it's new to him and he has to learn a new skill. I hope this doesn't sound patronising, but I often have to remind myself that they have to learn new things, and they don't just happen on their own!

I had 7 hours of continuos sleep last night - I feel like a different woman!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/03/2009 09:16

I have had another thought hopefully when you cook porridge or rice pudding, how about putting prunes in it (and blend once cooked if you want it smooth) this may help the poo transit.

My little darling son went from 7 till 7 between feeds last night!!!!

I don't know if this is technically sleeping through: he first woke at 12:30, I decided I would let DH pass him to me if he needed a feed. DH timed it and it took A 8 minutes of whingeing and fidgeting to get himself back to sleep. Same thing happened at 4:30, 8 minutes of a little grizzling and he was asleep. No shushing. No patting. No picking up. No feeding. Theoretically he could have been in his own room and we wouldn't have had to get up. Is that sleeping through? Or not really because he woke up?

My boobs were painful and rock hard this morning. And for the first time ever, one of them leaked when I got up just before feeding DS (I woke at about 6:30 and was awake on and off waiting for him to stir so I could feed).

I'm still going to wait till the end of the week before declaring this sleep training a success as I know how fickle he can be and he may well wake hourly tonight to make up for it. But right now he's having his morning nap after a breakfast of oatibix and apple, a little play on his mat and a cuddle in the garden.

hopefully good luck with the fig syrup.

pacita I think you're right about this spring, it's going to be glorious.

swissmiss welcome to the thread!

starlight A rarely sits in his highchair, preferring to stand on my lap and lie halfway across the table to grab food (probably another BLW no-no). Perhaps you don't need the tripp trapp just yet?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/03/2009 10:43

I think that sleeping through is seen as 5 hours of continuous sleep, not the while night. So well done A!

I'm loving this sunshine, it makes me feel so much better. And there's still some light left in the sky at 6pm! Then the clocks change soon - hurrah.

OP posts:
notcitrus · 16/03/2009 13:11

Best wishes to those with babies with excema. If it's any consolation A has rice porridge stuck to his face like glue and it looks like excema - he won't let me scrub enough to get it off! I hope it soaks off in the bath tonight! He's producing Real Poo now which is icky and I keep forgetting to use nappy liners which amkes it worse. Oh well.

Two nights this week he slept for 9 to 11 hours! So of course last night he woke after 5 hours and then every hour or two for the rest of the night demanding food... what's with that???

Still, it's a glorious day and I've just been paid by someone on Ebay I thought wasn't going to, so time for me and A to head to the PO!

CarrieBo · 16/03/2009 13:27

welcome swiss splish the St Arcbucks is just north of the M25/M23 junction, where there used to be a happy eater then a little chef. But not good for public transport or toddlers. Ah well.
starlight I can't quite decide to take the plunge and actually change ds's name. There is no doubt that I prefer the middle name, and I wish I'd spoken up at the very start, but I don't hate his name and would rather not go through the hassle of changing it. Dh's solution is to have another baby and use the name I like

Pacita · 16/03/2009 13:32

I just has the most rubbish night. You ladies with babies sleeping through, I know they say it doesn't, but does weaning help?

Pacita · 16/03/2009 13:34

plusone I had heard about the pure range and have seen it in a local shop. I think i'll give it a go...

ninja · 16/03/2009 13:50

I THINK that M did a 7 hour stretch last night (best ever) but I could have been too tired to remember waking and feeding her

what lovely weather - M's asleep outside and I'm going to clean the guineas, do wash number 7 since returning home and eat some curry!

CarrieBo · 16/03/2009 13:56

DG that is def sleeping through. Ds wakes at night and sucks his thumb and plays for a bit then goes back to sleep - a bit like you or me going to the loo in the night and rearranging the pillows!
pacita I saw a definite relationship between weaning and sleeping. But I've heard it said that if a baby was sleeping through (which ds was) then starts waking, then you wean them and they'll sleep through again. But if your dc hasn't slept through, then weaning won't necessarily 'fix' it if they've got sleep associations that mean they expect to be fed back to sleep when they wake in the night.

There seem to be lots of takers for a Leeds meetup, how do we arrange this? Do we need a separate group?

CarrieBo · 16/03/2009 13:57

hopefully I can only imagine the sort of nappies you're having to deal with after 7 poo free days. You poor thing! And poor T

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/03/2009 14:04

M's sleep has improved, but there are 2 reasons why that might be:

  1. He's taken to weaning very well and eats a lot more than I expected him to.
  1. He is having less sleep in the day. About 3-4 hours instead of 4-5.

Or it could be a combination of the two. I'll never know!

who was it that was saying they like the idea of blw but would want to spoon feed things like mash tatties? Sorry, potatoes.
Well we had baked tatties for tea last night and ds2 did really well with eating that, I just put a few bits I scooped out of ds1's tattie on his bumbo tray and he scoffed the lot. It worked really well as was soft enough for him to eat easily but stayed together for him to pick up. He also had chicken, cheese and lots of salad. I'm really getting into this blw stuff.
Still spoon fed him his greek yoghurt & raspberry jam mix though, can't quite bring myself to let him do that himself yet.
